    I am a Taiwanese and I have to agree with you that people here are extremely nice to immigrants and tourists. I guess it’s our education teaches us to open our mind to foreign cultures. If you get to visit Zhonghe, there’s a Burmese street. WuGu is where a lot of Vietnamese people reside. Not to mention XinZhuang industrial district, there’re more and more Caucasians live around there. Not sure what they do for living. Maybe because it’s a super convenient place to get to the airport by MRT.

    Prozzie, seeing that Taiwan is the most progressive east asian policy(i.e first ones to recognize same sex marriage, etc), I really want to make a plan to move there. However, I am still afraid that they who shall not be named will try and do what they did in HK, and no one in the world seems keen on stopping them. I would love to know if this apprehension is unfounded. Because I love the language, the food looks great, the cities and coast look amazing. The Japanese influence while not necessarily a super happy history, is interesting. I could have some conversation and connect with the older crowd in a language they grew up with. I do plan to visit in the coming years when covid restrictions allow. Anyways, sry for the book pls tell me if my fears are totally irrational I would love to hear it, and keep up the great content.

      Taiwan has $540B in foreign banks plus over $1 trillion in foreign assets with zero debt. China on the other hand is believed to have $3 trillion in foreign reserve and $1.5 trillion in debt but no one knows the real numbers for sure. Even using these figures, it's clear that China has no winning odds in a conventional war of invasion. If China does venture to invade, I for one will call up my senators to support a military intervention to stop it.

    The language barrier is still significant despite some people having good English. Only about one in five people in the city are fluent, and maybe one third have a few words but can't converse fully. And if you don't live in the capital then those numbers are even lower. And the people who speak a bit of English but not that much will often take your order in English but then get it wrong. So yeah definitely be prepared for a lot of pointing at things and Google Translations.

    Got to learn the local language if you're going to spend any real time in a foreign country. Living in Korea was so much easier and more enjoyable, the more I learned the language. Many Koreans I met spoke English and wanted to practice it on me. So that led to some odd conversation where I was trying my Korean and they were correcting me in both languages, and they were trying their English and I was helping correct them when they asked for it. Most Koreans were very nice and the more I tried to get the grammar correct, the more they seemed to appreciate it and offer their help. Oh, and WTF happened to your hair?

    • @Prozzie
      @Prozzie  3 роки тому +1

      I've heard from a lot of people that learning Korean is really hard, and locals are hard to talk to. But I could be wrong. And yea my hair is a disaster

    • @GradyGillis
      @GradyGillis 3 роки тому +2

      @@Prozzie With Korean, like Chinese, once you get the general grammar rules sorted, it's a little easier. Also, they have an alphabet, and that helped a lot. Then there's the time difference. I was in Korea from Jan. 82 to Jan 83. The world was different almost 40 years ago, and maybe the culture and society there was more open. Finally, I was there, courtesy of the U.S. Air Force and most of the people I knew had frequent or daily interactions with Americans. They had a lot more exposure to English; they unfortunately also had a lot more exposure to drunk idiots who learned bastardized barracks Korenglish and couldn't be bothered to learn actual proper Korean. I worked hard on pronunciation and grammar and the local people generally respected that effort. Probably a breath of fresh air after endless drunks butchering their language. One day in the market I hung back as I saw a handful of guys approach a grandmother selling the big asian pears. They tried their pointing and "how muchee thosee" on her and she scored big time. Charged them about $4 USD each. I bowed respectfully and did my best to use the proper respectful verb endings and grammar to ask the price. Her eyebrows shot up and she asked me how many I wanted. I wanted four. Price was 100 won each. That was about a total of 60 cents. She'd just pulled $16 for four of them a minute ago. She was definitely in a good mood. I had similar good interactions all around and I really think it was because I tried to respect their language and culture and they were open to people like that. I'll send a bit more on Patreon.

    I wanna move to Taiwan and currently I´m in Taiwan for 4 months now, thanks to my WH visa.
    I tried to apply for a Gold Card and got rejected because...I`m in Taiwan!
    After Talking with the government they only said, "that´s the rule, you can´t apply with a WH Visa".
    My plan was to apply for the Gold card, leave Taiwan and then re enter with the Gold card.
    But the only answer I got from the Government was "you can leave Taiwan and apply or getting a tourist visa and apply in Taiwan, but in both cases you can´t apply or get into Taiwan now, only when you are already in Taiwan with another visa. Also when you leave Taiwan and apply in the time your WH visa is valid (April 2022) you get rejected."
    Long story short, great country and I love living here. But be aware, people only follow rules here even they don´t make any sense at all and are not willing to cooperate.

    I’m glad you didn’t turn this into another long-winded interview with an expat like many of your UA-cam ‘friends’ would do.
    I’ll forgive you for the long-winded Rosetta infomercial.

    Foreigners too often ignore the health effects of living in Taiwan. There's a reason cost of living is lower and that's because it's less developed than comparable western countries, with much poorer air/water quality.
    It's true crime rates are low and there is almost zero violence but on the other hand, driving behavior can be straight out of Mad Max -- often reckless if not suicidal. Combine that with general negligence, carelessness, and sloppy workmanship results in not only dangerous roads, but poorly constructed buildings, food safety issues, lack of cleanliness.

    我是一個五十幾歲的台灣人,就我這個世代而言,在我學生時期的台灣,有能力從小上英文補習班的學生是極少數,我自己是上了國中才開始從26個字母學起。一般而言,像我這個世代的學生,能上高中的(只有差不多三成的國中生能念高中),英文的閱讀能力都很強,上了大學看英文原文書也沒問題,但會話能力和聽力都較弱。
    現在台灣年輕人的英文程度剛好和我們反過來,會話能力都不差,但閱讀能力就相對弱一點。可能因為現在上大學幾乎沒有門檻可言,有一些在國高中時期英文(和數學)就完全跌倒的人,一樣有大學可以念。
    我就遇過一些英文的基本會話能講,但閱讀能力很差,每次在學校碰到教授要求針對期刊發表讀書心得就不知所措的大學生。期刊上的字每個字都認識(至少都有查過字典),但放在一起組成一個長一點的句子,就會搞不清楚該怎麼翻成中文,更無法理解整篇文章的意義。

    I've been considering it for quite a while but what are gun, white arms and archery laws like there? (Yes, archery too, some Asian countries legit limit the poundages of bows xD)
