Taiwan has $540B in foreign banks plus over $1 trillion in foreign assets with zero debt. China on the other hand is believed to have $3 trillion in foreign reserve and $1.5 trillion in debt but no one knows the real numbers for sure. Even using these figures, it's clear that China has no winning odds in a conventional war of invasion. If China does venture to invade, I for one will call up my senators to support a military intervention to stop it.
The language barrier is still significant despite some people having good English. Only about one in five people in the city are fluent, and maybe one third have a few words but can't converse fully. And if you don't live in the capital then those numbers are even lower. And the people who speak a bit of English but not that much will often take your order in English but then get it wrong. So yeah definitely be prepared for a lot of pointing at things and Google Translations.
I have an old school barber who is 75 years old. I came back from Taiwan with a hair just like yours and begged him to try and fix it... He gives me crap about it every time I see him. Got to learn the local language if you're going to spend any real time in a foreign country. Living in Korea was so much easier and more enjoyable, the more I learned the language. Many Koreans I met spoke English and wanted to practice it on me. So that led to some odd conversation where I was trying my Korean and they were correcting me in both languages, and they were trying their English and I was helping correct them when they asked for it. Most Koreans were very nice and the more I tried to get the grammar correct, the more they seemed to appreciate it and offer their help. Oh, and WTF happened to your hair?
I've heard from a lot of people that learning Korean is really hard, and locals are hard to talk to. But I could be wrong. And yea my hair is a disaster
@@Prozzie With Korean, like Chinese, once you get the general grammar rules sorted, it's a little easier. Also, they have an alphabet, and that helped a lot. Then there's the time difference.
