  • I discuss Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 1e combat and how to determine initiative, or what player goes when. I also discuss how our ad&d 1e group uses this rule and why we are doing it that way.
    My AD&D 1e combat playlist: • D&D 1E Combat
The quick story on how the fighter I mentioned was killed: • why did the fighter die?

Sometimes modern players don't realise that AD&D 1st edition is a game of rulings. The DM has more heavy lifting in 1e than the modern game. In current D&D, players practically tell the DM their characters' stats, abilities, and special rules.
In 1e (particularly pre '85), the DM has to decide what a character can do based on the background and class; "Can I jump over the gap?" A player will ask, and the DM needs to quickly decide the answer. All the variables weighed and measured, then a ruling (Yes, No, or 'only on a 1 to x with a dice roll'). Nothing anywhere, but the DM having to make a ruling.
Understanding all the options as a DM is important, and sometimes you will bend or deviate, other times fall in line and use the text as written.

Nice explanation. Love the bear. hah. Arranging the furniture reminded of the cold opening to that old kids' show "The Friendly Giant".
I consider Initiative re-roll a required house-rule if the D&D edition does not have it. With so many ways to track individual initiative now though apps, etc. all those clever tricks to manage group initiative in 1e that confused everyone seem kind of moot now. They're not really too hard to grok once explained well, but fiddly at times to track.
The poor spellcasters: reasons why wands and staffs are so useful to avoid the casting issue limitations in melee. This is one area where not having a battle mat becomes a real problem as it is hard to know if the spellcaster is really protected. The casters need a Pavise shield or something for cover. heh
The 'ADDICT' pdf at Dragonsfoot is a good read, regarding the whole spellcasting conundrum.

Thanks. Re-rolling initiative is fun and keeps everybody on their toes. Yes addict is a good read, though it gets convoluted at times too.

Thanks for unpacking initiative which can be a bit confusing just reading through the text.
Cool minis and use of disply!

Individual initiative might be slower but it does improve player engagement and reduces meta gaming.

I think so as well and so far no problems.

if they wander off to do other stuff; just reduce their hit points to zero : they will stay engaged next time!
also the way you explain your version is no different to the dmg, normally use range weapons first if its not the first round they may hit either side.... you also work out spell effects and turning undead during range combat, dex advantages are for other things not initiative...

You'll have to cite the rules in the DMG that says the players are rolling for the monsters & vice versa. I personally don't care if you do that, it's your game but the RAW does not say that. It actually points to the fact that the DM makes both rolls & the highest of the two dice goes first. So if the PC die is higher than the monster die, the PC's go first. Again, you'll have to provide a source for your understanding of it to claim it as RAW.
EDIT: In fact, the example combat on page 71 proves your method is not RAW.

Is amazing how many videos claim to explain 1e initiative, and NO ONE of them (NO ONE) explains something that meets the whole RAW procedure.
And it is maybe because 1e initiative for two parties with multiple characters each, is unclear RAW.
Why don’t any of this guys just READ what is in the DMG/PHB and tries to decypher that??

Everybody inserts house rules and interpretations as if they were the RAW content.
