If the state wanted to house residents, sell the land as parcels let the people build their homes. This would be better for the local economy. Exclude corporate America from this state! No more Developers! No more HOA! No more Big Brother!

You gotta choose the right area...dont build where there are burials. Make more homes for the locals. EIS impact needs to be done and done fast and right. Make more houses upcountry or haiku, paia or better yet expand launiopoko for locals. Houses for locals needs to done. Investors from outer mainland places shouldn't be allowed to buy property when locals dont have a place to live. Build for the locals!! Keep locals on island.

People of Maui: "Housing is too expensive! My kids are moving away and I cannot afford to live!
Builders: "Hey we got this big development, its coming!"
People of Maui: "Noooo!!!! The cultural sites, we dont really wanna disturb those piles of dirt! Also yeahhh."
    Dummehs; go move vegas already

It’s not “piles of dirt”, it’s iwi kūpuna and artifacts.
If you find the cultural beliefs of Native Hawaiians something to be mocked, it’s YOU who should be moving to Vegas.

@@The.Hawaiian.Kingdom Its piles of dirt. If everything is sacred than nothing is sacred, yall cant even decide on where to dump toxic building materials after the lahaina fire, everyone agrees it should go somewhere, but nobody like say where. Typical Hawaiian nonsense, create a problem stay silent for any solutions. Go vegas, without white people yall would still be doing human sacrifices.

Sorry, Maui, you're no different that any other highly desirable location on the mainland or in the world ... monied interests move in, take over, and long time residents are ultimately priced out and forced to flee!

When has any development not get pushback from the locals anywhere in the history of developments? Someone always says “not in my neighborhood.” House the homeless, good, just not in my neighborhood. More housing for everyone, good, just not in my neighborhood. Build a telescope for scientific studies, good, just not on my imaginary sacred mountain. This is the Aloha way.

In Hawaii you have no right to develop your land... The county has to agree with what you doing... It's absurd... Low income housing right next to Jeff Bezos house!

because this will do nothing to help locals. 7k+ STR condos being forced into long term rent will rent at a very high rate. Think about it, they succeeded in short term rental for a reason. Location, quality of unit, etc. It'll go for 2-3k easy. You know who can afford that? Not locals thats for dam sure. It'll be the mainland people who do remote work and is rolling with money.
Besides locals don't want affordable condos. (which doesn't exist by the way which HOA by itself runs 1000+/month). They want affordable HOUSES.

@@MakahaChris that's what happens when you get bruddah bruddah relationships - the mayor is in with the developers (campaign donations) but the STR's no give donation so not needed by the mayor. Meanwhile the STR's employ people to service the properties they pay taxes...but hotels (Mufi loser) don't like the competition so they too donate to the mayor amd get the mayor and council to do their dirty work.
