This is my first big watch purchase. The whole concept appealed to me. I am a nerd, an engineer. So this watch is for me. Plus the understated looks also go with my personality. As a first watch, it fits my bill of being versatile, good looking and yet under the radar when I wear it to work.
I love this watch and am working to add it to my collection which also includes a Seamaster 300 and Speedmaster. I had briefly considered a Rolex Explorer II or Oyster but between the pricing and availability I'm just not into playing that game. This watch seems to have some of that Rolex understatement but with Omega's penchant for technology and at a much lower price.
I worked f(1981-1984) at the last hospital for the employees of the Santa Fe Railroad in East Los Angeles (ironically across the street from Hollenbeck Park, where as 2-year-old child I first walked on the old bridge, 1957). I am so eager to wear a Railmaster Omega... I dedicate it to all the men who lived their last days at the hospital. Life is really a box of chocolates... so many stories...God rest their souls....
Which is it, Omega? This company is tripping over itself riding on the same old stuff. I dare anyone to say how many 'limited editions' they have produced of the sea and speed. I'll never buy into this ancient hype hodinkee promotes.
G1234 X It has more text on the dial than a goddam seiko. Omega have totally gone nuts, but this will never be discussed as you should not bite the hand that feeds you, right guys?
Great video and a really great release (although Omega really really should just have call it the Railmaster). By the way, I think there has been a mistake in editing since your specs say that it has a caliber 8809, not an 8806.
No, actually, launching a movement with a mere 55 hrs power reserve seems pretty lame in this day and age where Longines is launching a 65 hrs power reserve of sublime accuracy unlike the more volatile co-axial, and where Tissot offers an 80 hrs power reserve with similar accuracy as that of Omega. Omega has also moved away from their innovative design, from a designers perspective they seem to have difficulties deciding on which direction to go, classical or innovative? As a serious watch buyer and former Omega fanboy, I really have great difficulties finding out which one is the better brand, Omega or Longines? Omega still needs to step it up and rethink their business strategy. The latest Railmaster is a dead duck, too understated for wealthy people, too uninteresting for people saving up for the latest Speedmaster model.
@Northstar You can have an Omega Master Chronometer Co-Axial timepiece with 60 hours power reserve, via the 8900 calibre, used predominantly in the Omega Constellation Globemaster series. At first blush this might not seem much, but this calibre boasts 'two barrels' and 39 jewels, so 60 hours is quite impressive. The two barrels ensure that chronometric precision is kept whether the watch is low powered or fully wound up. Of course, this is not enough for some, and other watches are available. I think the Railmaster is damn good, and 55 hours is manageable as long as you look after it often.
You are literally only quoting power reserve as an indicator of innovation and some baseless statements about volatility of the coaxial escapement. Not to mention this ridiculous statement: "too understated for wealthy people, too uninteresting for people saving up for the latest Speedmaster model". Stick with your Tissot
@Duke Of Prunes Best comment I’ve heard about it and for the millionaire watch collector wearing his watch of the day wearing denim at Starbucks this is his watch that day.
I just wish they'd modernize this form factor. I am not a huge fan of faux aged markers. I know the aquaterra has some similar cues but this would be amazing with a touch of modern/minimal design
Like brought up in our watch-group: there is a smudge of paint inside Omegas O, and on the inside of the logo. Furthermore there is a defect on the innerside of the minute hand. Plus dust on the inside. Plus dust behind the crystal. What has happened Omega, too much succes leading to bad quality control??
"A Week on the Wrist" Edited out were appearances of the watch at a #MeToo event, a Ramen shop binge eating stop, and 3 separate visits to the host's favorite leather bar.
If you have a large watch collection and a big wardrobe this is the watch to wear with your stone washed looking shirts and weathered jeans. If you don’t have a Ducati Monster just carry a helmet around and ....
This watch in real life was a bit of a disappointment for me. Unlike many, it's not the faux patina that bothered me. It just seemed as though the watch was meant to be smaller. I had been looking forward to this watch but... what a shame.
I agree it is a little on the larger/bulkier side. I still quite like it for myself because I have large wrists. I also thought it looked good on the reviewer who does not seem to be particularly large. The size of the movements Omega uses means that pretty much all of their watches feel like they are a tad larger than what would be ideal.
I posted a picture of it on my Instagram royceduncanwatches and someone commented that it was too small for them. If it was 38mm I would have bought it still. As modern sizes go I think it's just right because they could have made it 42mm and 15mm thick and that would have truly been sad.
I was the complete opposite haha, never really took it seriously until I tried it on the wrist. Right away it just felt at home. Not many watches gave me that feeling. Was not a fan of the clasp however.
..or he can just buy a Longines, Longines is becoming a brand en par with Omega, better power reserve, better accuracy, better bracelets than Omega's shitty Planet Ocean bracelets !
honestly, anyone willing to spend 5k on a watch should consider doubling the investment give or take and go after something like a Glashutte original. Rolex and omega just dont do it for me at the price; you're paying a large premuim for the name.
Agreed, thats really sloppy. The dust on the minute hand is unacceptable, as well. I wish the "reviewer" mentioned these flaws as Omega needs to be taken to task on their quality control.
It's more window dressing compared to this newer version, but I personally think the prior gen 39.2mm ref. 2503.52 is the absolute best looking Railmaster. Thanks, Rich
This is such a nice design, but then the fake patina lume: noooooooooo! 😩 Also the cheap looking printed dial. So close but this is a miss. Also the finishing looks really scruffy in your macros.
I bought one with the black/graphite dial (which is great) on a steel bracelet, and I really like it - a great entry level watch with a real sense of identity and 21c performance. I picked mine up nearly new with a 25% price cut and that makes it incredible value. The Omega makes the Rolex Milgauss seem super expensive and a little dated - the Rolex bracelet is better though.
The proportions of this watch bug me; at 40mm, the case seems bulbous to me. I definitely prefer the trilogy version; the 20mm bracelet and 38mm case flow together in a much more aesthetically pleasing manner. I feel the same way about the 39mm vs 36mm rolex explorer. The design proportions always seem to jump out at me in particular with these simpler "field" style watches.
I agree 100%! I tried on the Railmaster as I actually wanted to buy it, but it was too thick. The case sides are very tall (like the Black Bay). My Speedmaster Pro is much slimmer in profile. Too bad!
Too understated for wealthy people, too uninteresting for people saving up for the latest Speedmaster model. Nothing new in particular. This piece is yet another Omega flop !
Nice video!! I think a SBGH001 Pre-Owned at 3-3.5k will be a better bet. I steered away from Omega years ago due to its bombardment of “limited editions”. 🤨. But the Speedmaster is another story 😎
@@seabiscuit726142 Not true. The original Railmaster had a soft-iron faraday cage to secure their antimagnetic rating, but modern movements by Omega achieve their 15,000 gauss rating by using nonmagnetic materials like their silicon balance spring and nonmagnetic balance wheel. For example, the Aqua Terra 38mm uses the 8800 movement (The Railmaster uses the 8806, in the same family but with no date) and includes a sapphire caseback while maintaining its magnetism rating. The solid caseback is a stylistic choice.
It's no doubt a lovely watch but the Explorer I still blows this out of the water imo.. perhaps if I was opposed to a shinier attention grabber I'd go this route
Explorer 1 is a better watch, especially in the value department. These omegas in a couple of years will be in the low 3k or perhaps high 2k. Plus the explorer is more robust, service friendly and has a better bracelet.
Beautiful watch - but it's so far out of my price range it's not even funny. Maybe if I don't eat anything for 10 months... There are two kinds of people in the watch world - those who think $10,000 is "entry level" and those who have to make do with G-Shocks. The cheap ones. Calling $5,100 "a really great value" feels quite foreign - like calling a $20,000 PC a "bargain". To me, $500 is what I'd call "great value", and considering that you can get Railmaster homages for a fifth of THAT tells me that Omega hasn't skimped on their margins.
Am I the only thinking that for that amount of money I could get a similar Tudor and get a bit more bang for my buck?. The Tudor is just a bit more good looking to my taste. Just a though
To the unimaginative, this watch looks ordinary, even boring. So the Rolex crowd will not be impressed. There is a category of people who appreciate alternative designs and impressive technical specifications and this watch fits that edge case quite well. I will budget for this particular model.
It is definitely the sexiest watch of 2017. It competes with the Explorer I. For some reason, it has a slight "Bond-Feeling" to it. I own the older version that Colin Farrell wore in London Boulevard and Ewan McGregor wore in Cassandra's Dream. It gets so much wrist time that I sometimes wonder if I should sell all my other watches and make it a one piece collection. Gotta love the Railmaster!
I'm wearing mine for 2 days now. I preferred it over the explorer 1 so that I wouldn't have to answer to all the comments about wearing a " Rolex". And voila, nobody even noticed I'm wearing a new watch so far.
Hi, cool your interested. I had primarily bought it for outdoor activities in winter so I put it in the drawer after Easter and took out my sea master for the summer. After four weeks I wondered how summer would suit the railmaster. So I'm wearing it in bright sunlight and under water. The overall matt finish gives the watch a reserved icy-cool effect, and the dial surprises me a few times a day. The watch has no bling, and on a dull day the railmaster can be a bit bland, but on a bright day it's an enjoyable watch. The bracelet has a no fuss design. Just yesterday I thought the best words to sum up the design are: It has the design aesthetic, looks and feel of an Art Deco watch. Not Bauhaus but Art Deco style, like the Chrysler Building etc...and with a very carefree and reliable movement. It's not the PERFECT watch, but close enough to put a smile on my face. Cheers.
Mohan Sunkara The Rolex Explorer is the vastly superior watch. As soon as you walk out the door (with this Railmaster), it will have lost about $2K in value..
This watch is okay but I don't see the point. If you're an Omega collector the 57 Reissue limited edition is a nicer Railmaster. If you want to splurge on a luxury 369 dial do everything watch the Explorer is the only choice. If you just want a decent sporty tool watch you can get several Sinn watches for the price of this Omega. I had a 36mm 2500 Railmaster which I loved except the bracelet , but I paid $2,000 CAD for it back in 2012 (used watch) but I would rather get a Sinn than this RM now.
Dust on the hands and smudged printing? Seems like a watch someone could really enjoy as long as they didn't own a loupe. That said, this piece is neither fish nor fowl...which admittedly some people may enjoy, but for a pure "dressier" sports watch, why not go for a basic Rolex OP? For a pure dress piece, I can't imagine choosing this over the new Cartier Drive Extra Flat in steel.
just...why the stupid faux patina man...it's so lame, honestly, and it doesn't look good in my opinion. No reason at all especially after releasing the 1957 Railmaster.
Even Steinhart had to retract his faux patina dial on the Ocean One Vintage Military. People just don't buy it. People spending exorbitant amounts on watches want to keep it real, like when going to the dentist.
If you want an old watch, you buy an old watch...if you buy a new watch is because you want a NEW watch. it's a pity because it ruins it, such a poor decision. Seems like the short minute and hour hands in the 2010 Explorer I.
It's just a matter of how and where you put an aspect of the aesthetic points to watch design. I personally don't think that was a bad idea to put the faux patina on hands to bring up some vintage vibes even though they could've put more efforts to details thruout the dial and case.
I’ve posted my comment about dust and poor QC (as I experienced myself on Omegas several times!) first and then later read the other comments about these issues here. What a community! Watchlovers, unite and fight poor QC because it drives us CRAZY!
Anyone else agree Omega is trash now? Their adverts are on the sides of bus shelters here, they're selling in department stores, the Seamaster range looks disgusting (Commander one with fake medal badge included is vomit), the fake patinas, the never ending special editions....
It looks poorly designed: the v-shaped accents are too long and don't sit harmoniously on the dial; the vintage-style lume is aesthetically questionable; the case size is rather large for a three-hander (39mm would be much better); the price is OK-ish but not great; this movement needs to be shown using an open back.
Why, oh why Omega had to make again a beautiful watch to mess it up with this fake vintage lume. I’ll never get or understand it, with normal lume it would be a really perfect watch...
This is my first big watch purchase. The whole concept appealed to me. I am a nerd, an engineer. So this watch is for me. Plus the understated looks also go with my personality. As a first watch, it fits my bill of being versatile, good looking and yet under the radar when I wear it to work.

Funny how tastes are different. I LOVE the fact that they went with a solid case back here. I wish that most Omegas had that option

The only value-for-money in this watch is the movement itself
you can tell straight away this dude doesn't much like this watch
Dust on the hands and smudged printing? Seems like a watch someone could really enjoy as long as they didn't own a loupe. That said, this piece is neither fish nor fowl...which admittedly some people may enjoy, but for a pure "dressier" sports watch, why not go for a basic Rolex OP? For a pure dress piece, I can't imagine choosing this over the new Cartier Drive Extra Flat in steel.
They are printing on a deep brushed surface.
My Seiko with the same dial finish has worse printing which changes with how even the surface is.
Why doesn't Omega drop the "Seamaster" name and just call it the "Railmaster"?
just...why the stupid faux patina man...it's so lame, honestly, and it doesn't look good in my opinion.
This is how you adjust the bracelet if curious ua-cam.com/video/4nwDLf76vn4/v-deo.html
that god damn Faux patina......................
This is an easy pass and somewhat underwhelming. Nice brushed finish though but I'll happily stick with my Aqua Terra.
Look like Eterna Kon Tiki
Pass
This versus the Rolex explorer
It's a 8806 caliber NOT 8809!
No ums or uhs thank god
BUT I couldn't forgive myself to spend 3k on a painted dial
I see Specks of dust and a lint on the hour hand and also the minute hand even by watching a UA-cam video! Don’t you folks care about that?
I’ve posted my comment about dust and poor QC (as I experienced myself on Omegas several times!) first and then later read the other comments about these issues here. What a community! Watchlovers, unite and fight poor QC because it drives us CRAZY!
I'll rather have the latest Speedmaster model anytime. This piece really doesn't offer anything new - People will vote with their feet !
A bland wristwatch with a cheezy woodtrim dial for 5 grand. Bargain!
no way!
Is this review a paid advertisement? Where is the actual critique with pros and cons?
Seamaster-Railmaster -----> Submariner-Sea Dweller 🤣
Wrong. "Seamaster" is the equivalent of "oyster".
Trev Barlow Was being sarcastic ;)
Anyone else agree Omega is trash now? Their adverts are on the sides of bus shelters here, they're selling in department stores, the Seamaster range looks disgusting (Commander one with fake medal badge included is vomit), the fake patinas, the never ending special editions....
"let's take a nice looking watch and update it to look like dogshit"
It looks poorly designed: the v-shaped accents are too long and don't sit harmoniously on the dial; the vintage-style lume is aesthetically questionable; the case size is rather large for a three-hander (39mm would be much better); the price is OK-ish but not great; this movement needs to be shown using an open back.
Why, oh why Omega had to make again a beautiful watch to mess it up with this fake vintage lume. I’ll never get or understand it, with normal lume it would be a really perfect watch...
Faux Patina 💩
But, no micro-adjustment on the clasp.
I hate that.
That's insane you could get a used Rolex for 5100$
