Lived in Rapid City for a few years as a young single guy. I loved cruising my KZ400 on the winding roads. Climbed up behind the faces. Beautiful lakes up in the hills. Worked at the airport for awhile. Only been back twice in 40 years. Damn im old,
Every time I see your Poppa Al it brings back great memories of my grandfather. They don't make em like that anymore. Cherish those moments with him Craig.
In 1984 I bought a 1978 Yamaha XS1100 with full fairing, trunk and hard bags to take me out to Californioa from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Canada. I loaded my tent and sleeping bag and camping equipment. Ended up in California and never went back except for family visits. I was envoius of the features in the GoldWing back then, but they were out of my price range. The XSEleven performed flawlessly for many years, being my only method of transportation until I bought a new car in California. (Written from my den in our house overlooking the Pacific, located in north San Diego - Encinitas, CA).
The XS1100s are fantastic bikes. I’m riding a ‘78 “E” model right now and it’s my go to “all-rounder”. Yamaha really nailed it with the big “Excess Eleven”
Back in the 1980s I had a 1984 and later a 1986 Goldwing. Used ones went for about 4K - 5K bucks in the late 1980s. They were and still are, fantastic bikes. The engine is butter smooth and one real problem is falling asleep on the highway with legs up feet resting on aftermarket highway pegs and a aftermarket backrest. It is that smooth and quiet. There were tons of aftermarket parts made for those bikes. The problem is parts for a 40 year old bike. The 1200 engine is good for 100K - 150K miles. It's a horizontal 4 cylinder, so the center of gravity is low. Easier than you think to maneuver around. Such a home run for Honda
As a young teenager i rode on the back of my dad's 1985 Aspencade for many miles (that was actually his very first motorcycle!!) Since then he has had many bikes from 1500 goldwings, Pacific coasts, Harley FLHTCUs and always said that his favorite was the 85 Aspencade!! I have worked in a motorcycle industry for 20 years now and the last bike he bought from me before he died was a Bergman 650 now that was his favorite lol Great video
Hats off to Papa Al! I really like the Honda…awesome machine for the money. Glad you guys had fun and were able to do it as a family. Thanks for sharing!
So fun... we live in Florida and ride just about every weekend. I've watched a lot of Sturgis videos and never really felt enough urge to go there, but your video may have changed my mind.
I’ve owned an ‘89 and ‘02 GW. My wife and I toured many states over thousands of miles on them. She preferred the wings over the HD. But, enjoyed riding with me when she could. Both wings were exceptional bikes. I’ve been riding an ‘07 CVO HD the past 12 years. I won’t go back to a GW, mainly due to their top heavy nature. Also, I love the connectedness to the road feel of my HD. I liken the difference between them like this: The GW is like s sports car. Refined ride and loads of comfort. The Harley is like a hot rod. Has great road feel and connectedness to the asphalt. Both are fast and fun. It just depends on what you want in a bike.
Craig, that was one of your best videos ever! Just like you remember, your son will remember that trip for the rest of his life. Has your Dad ever come with you and Papa Al?
@@FlyingWheels I love your other videos and I love the Honda. That three day ride is isn’t terrible for a serious biker though , it’s an adventure. Lol. Sturgis is kinda sad for a serious biker, if everyone had to ride there , there would only be about ten percent of the people. I’ve seen so many people that act hardcore and then you find out they’re in a motel in Rapid city with their hauler. 😂 Keep doing what you’re doing,I’ll keep watching.
Met President Clinton, staying in the same hotel as Van. Clinton shook our hands, Van walked on. Sad really, my young boy was a fan. End-off. Van told my boy he doesn't give autographs, my son said neither do I. So proud.
Really not that interested in this bike video, but I did thumbs up, I've been subscribed since before the $400 Ferrari flip started. How many miles on this goldwing?
I miss riding so bad. But if I could get back into it, thats about the bike I would get. I stopped riding when crotch rockets and the idiots who ride them started to ruin it for those of us with some sense. But now, at 53, I dont care anymore. I want to ride. Actually I would not even need a bike that powerful. Something like a Virago 750 would be great, but I am 6'3" I need something taller. Either way, can't even afford the 1200 for it right now with this economy. Too busy spending all my money on guns and ammo.
I Love your videos but you p*ssed me off when you were riding without a helmet on! I'm a EMT in England and know the dangers of Head Trauma. Please keep your helmet on so we can enjoy future videos.🇬🇧👍
$1200 for a running Goldwing is STEAL. A solid running bike is worth of that class is $2000. 73000 miles is scary.... because it's way too low.. That bike will take you to Sturgis or anywhere else for another 20 years.
Somehow the City of Sturgis cannot pay its bills and is facing dissolution despite all the revenue from the visitors ???? They need to hire a Craig who can make the city government work efficient without always buying new and increasing the budget.
love your videos, but it seems sacrilegious to ride a Honda to Sturgis. I know, they were made in Ohio, but its still a Japanese bike. I wonder when it became acceptable to show up on anything but an Indian or Harley?
I always thought the same as I was raised around bikers who hated metric bikes !! I’m guessing things have changed as I haven’t been around any old school bikers reason they are mostly dead
Craig (I love you like a brother), please stop. I noticed it a couple of times already, but it's enough now. You are not Doug Demuro. That's his thing that makes him awesome. You have your things that make you awesome, independent of what DD or anyone else does. Please, trust me. No more, "THIS.....".
I hope your helmet isn't more than 7 years old. It's looks kinda crusty. Helmets have an expiration. The foam inside gets brittle and loses it's ability to cushion your brain. Please, get an M or SA 2020 or newer rated helmet. I hear all the time... "I don't wanna pay $600 for a new helmet". Well, how much is your head worth to you?
I can't believe you are that shallow people have been taking Honda's to that rally and every other brand of motorcycle for the 40 years I have been going there

love the classic goldwings- always loved them when i worked a Honfa bike shop - they are many times more reliable than harleys

yeah, when you trailer it in and just ride around town, anything will make it

I haven't finished the video yet, BUT if you haven't checked out the US Saab Museum in Sturgis you absolutely need to.
Nice thx!
Hello Craig, What are your thoughts on the 2019 Audi Q8 with 32,000 miles.
Good buy or hard pass?
