Having worked with so many amateur drummers that played too much, it is very comforting to know that even the great JR was gently nudged to keep it simple. I love this guy.

He was told to keep it simple because there was a lot of things going on in the song. You play for the song. Some songs call for simple some call for lots of notes. Drummers are not the only ones that play too much! Those that play the right thing at the right time are musicians.

Just listen to 'Satisfaction' by Bill Champlin. JR's drumming is just phenomenal!

When I first saw John play on a UA-cam video he reminded me a lot of John Bonham for some reason. Powerful swing drummer was the connection I think. That is what John Bonham was and everyone thought he was just a power house Rock Drummer. Ian Paice from Deep Purple was the same way. Mitch Mitchell from the Jimi Hendrix Experience. A lot of the British drummers had that swing influence. You can see he plays for the music and song and has a nice groove. Great to watch and to listen to. Great Interview with great questions. Very interesting.

At 4:05, wished you would have asked JR to elaborate on his “time concept” statement.

There is no best either your really good or your not. JR would say this . But yes he's friggin great. It's Vinnie JPocaro an JR..I LOVE John Bonham too. I enjoy Keith Carlock an one of my best friends the D Strikland also Robert Montgomery is why I love the kit. I always had a guitar. I nevva got a kit till I was 50 yrs old. I played snare 4 years in the band Sat 1st chair till I quit honest. If I'd just not quit I'd had more credits to pass my grade lmao. Hey we gotta f up to learn . Real talk..

JR' groove..the way he plays to.enjoy it is what a drummer does. If unfeel the groove an feel it. Its muscle memory as anything being active if dat makes since. Its one thing to play its another when folks wanna dance to the groove the music. . Thabk u John. Im John as well. Real talk t you

Interestingly, studio keyboard great Michael Boddicker also came from Iowa.
