Sounds like quite a wonderful life they had together. I'll never understand why people are that interested and judging about other peoples' sex life.

Politicians like to use topics like this as a way of diversion. So most people do not ask what they are really up to. So if your worried about what someone else is doing in their bedroom you're not worried about what the politicians are really up to!

In the United States, these used to be called "Boston marriages". They were households to two upper-class women who didn't want a traditional marriage. I think they were tolerated by society because women were often thought not have a sexual nature. So, society to see these relationships as done for companionships, rather than romantic. As you mentioned, a similar relationship between two men would not have been tolerated. Very interesting episode!

I have a friend who enjoys men but not a full time coupling. I could see her doing this at that time because she values her independence so much.
I do think these particular ladies were lesbians though, not saying they weren't

There’s a great book written about these ‘companions’. The Ladies of Llangollen’, it’s a true account, due to the amount of people that knew their story, & they were both avid diarists.
As you said, They were determined to be together, so ran away. The first time, they were caught & returned, due mainly to the age & prosperity of the younger of the two..
Later, both families tried to keep them apart, but they had made financial savings, & arrangements ahead of their travels, allowing them to travel & rent a home in Wales. Beyond that, they would take one day at a time.
The cottage was in poor shape, so the original rent was low, but they began to work the land, & raise livestock, which brought in money for living expenses, to pay farmhands, to care for the livestock. They even had a smaller building made habitable for the game keeper. They paid little in wage, but no one seemed to mind, as everyone who ever did business with them were enthralled by their rich characters & how hard they themselves worked.
Yes, they were a couple, lovers, & from the start, their reputation spread far & wide. Most assumed they were just companions, who only ever wanted a quiet life away from the busy life in Ireland. The old housemaid knew the truth of course, & when she became Ill they cared for her.
They did little to attract attention other than, one of them loved to paint & sketch soldiers, & scenes of ongoing wars, or unrest. She sold them to newspapers, & a few privately. They wrote short articles & wrote many letters, keeping copies for themselves.
They entertained well known writers, poets. Businessmen & wealthy women. And other well known cross dressers, gay men & lesbians. All having heard their brave & happy tale from previous visitors.
As you read, they were people of routine, & preferred visitors to make an appointment. They both dressed alike in heavy, dark masculine clothing, that blotted out feminine traits, but they seldom ventured far, they had everything they needed, the locals protected them, & their good name, & ran errands to the village close by.
Sarah, was eventually awarded a pension from relatives, that was rightfully hers, which eased winter conditions.
Anne Lister, better known now as “Gentleman Jack”, was Intrigued by them, & how well they were treated & seemingly accepted. Even though Anne, felt they, lived a very closed life, she envied their ability to run off & leave family & restrictions behind, to live together & remain so all their lives. Devoted to the end, which spurred Anne on with her quest to find a life partner, & to travel, & enjoy the the under belly of society & the freedom she felt when in France, the parties or coffee house where lesbians could meet to talk & be free to express themselves, & by dressing however they liked.

I never leave home unless I am going to the doctor or dentist. For a decade I didn't go out at all. No doctor, no dentist. I didn't even go out on my back porch. I go in my yard now and walk for exercise and sun around my house. That includes going onto my front sidewalk and seeing neighbors and passers by sometimes. I have agoraphobia but am now under the care of a psychiatrist and on medication. My husband and I are retired now so I'm no longer lonely and I have always had the company of one or two dogs that I love. I am in touch with my husbands mother and father who I have not seen for decades, but I love. My doctor does think I am a true introvert but I am not sure about that because I used to love parties and friends.

Amazingly creative in Gothic designing ,
Both in harmony with realised design building dreams .
A very demanding financially secure position gave them this freedom to make their own blissfully choosen life.
Not many could escape marriage at the high end pressures to obey , they did .
I hope away from the false facades of society both achieved contented lives .

Just up the road from me. Beautiful wee place Llangollen. We're proud of The Ladies having lived there for so long. It's not too surprising that they were able to live there in peace, English 'witches' escaped persecution and death by escaping into Wales. @kfemme68 Рік тому

My response would be the same either way but I can't speak for everyone who watches this. I know we don't have as many examples of men from this time period who did this but what you have to remember is that for men, all they had to do is move out of their area and to a big town where nobody knows them and then tell people they're brothers or something like that. It wouldn't be a problem for them to have the money to survive (like it was for women)... which is why we have more of these stories about women than we do men. Also, if the men were smart they'd go on dates with women or whatever but never get serious with any one girl and tell people it's because of a heartbreak back home. Gay men have been doing it for hundreds of years but we don't have the stories because they blended in and didn't seem like they were any kind of partners more than roommates and hey lots of people do that to save money. 🤷🏼‍♀️
I know for the time period, it was more palatable that it was women because there was an idea at the time that if there was no man involved...then there could be no sexual interaction. Or to say it another way, women couldn't be sexual with one another. The prevailing thought was that women weren't able to be sexual in any way. This was still the time period for women where you were supposed to lay still until your husband finished. If you enjoyed sex, then you must be a loose woman, a real floozy. Well you might as well go ahead and go get a job in the Cat House in town because you weren't fit for a decent man and marriage! 😜

On the other hand, When you get older you don't feel the need to socialize anymore as you learn people love to talk and use everything you may have said in confidence to talk about you. Therefore, you'll be lucky if you have any friends once your older.

Yes the best of friend, taught by a 30 yr old to a child. Totally respectfully, child abuse is kewl since they're female. Can't even say women since once one was a child.

@@sarahthompson8610you do realize that within the era that they were both raised in it was not considered unusual to have an age gap. I think your rage is misplaced on the lesbians who did not gain a single thing other than love and companionship, and should really be directed at the old men marrying 12 year olds to sire a new generation of men who do the same.
Child abuse? Come the fuck on

Well, its amazing that these 2 ladies were able to live together at that time. To me it matters not that they were lesbians. It really matters not, but for all the religious people and such.

The only thing I really don’t like is if this were a story about a wealthy 29 year old man, meeting an orphaned 13 year old girl and becoming close with her…eventually moving her away from her family and in isolation from society - we would view this story quite differently in modern times. Not as an amazing love story but a story of a groomer and his naive and vulnerable victim.

Very good research, sarah used to hide elenor in Woodstock house in Inisteoige Co.Kilkenny so they could be together , I feel their relationship started as friendship when sarah was young and elenor had a huge influence on her as she was 16 yrs older but developed into love over time , they probably were lovers and the servant too , great Anne Lister visited them as she was of the same persuasion, it was a difficult period socially for those women and they must have become popular even as an oddity in the day, wonder what they thought of Byron cos he was a wild character and a bit deviant.

The double DD at the end of Plas Newydd is a single letter in Welsh and pronounced as a “th” as in the English word “Thee”

I have often read that back in the day, there was no clear understanding of what a lesbian was. They just could not conceive of this when it came to women...

Queen Victoria infamously made bans of homosexuality.....against men. Despite that Queen Anne from before her time had litigations with women as portrayed in the recent movies. Victoria was dumb in that regard, but I'm sure lesbians in her time took advantage of that.
