Rafa looked like totally different player in Brisbane compared to other events this year. He was moving really well, very solid defense, deep, powerful groundstrokes and you could tell that he was playing with a lot of confidence. I think his another injury setback against Thompson completely changed the momentum. He never looked the same physically and mentally as well. I think he lost trust in his body and it never came back.

@JonathanSTW I’ve followed Rafa for most of his career he is by far my favourite of all time. IMO the GOAT missing 22 slams or retired from due to injury but still 22 wins??? You are totally spot on, my hopes were lifted in Brisbane but other than fleeting moments and shots no he never looked the same. I still love tennis but I’m seriously gutted. My heart was literally pounding the last few games when he won OZ 22 to win his 22st on his least successful slam as awesome and how he did it. Legend

21st win at OZ 22 I meant. RG 22 the real drama was that humid semifinal under the roof against Zverev…I THINK Rafa would have eventually won the match but it was so up and down for both players but until that terrible fall Zverev was really putting the pressure on. Remember the first set tie break? Insane set points saved by Rafa to go and win a set after 90 minutes…,one set! Was really happy for him to win FO 22 but after that semifinal the final was so one sided for Rafa. I don’t think it’s really set in yet that he’s retired, I’m in a state of denial🙁

yeup - he started the year great. That injury was the final/final/final straw that truly broke the camels back. Playing with that confidence I would have given him the edge at all the clay events.

I think his injury in Brisbane was the ultimate one that ended his career. His level was looking good but then he got hurt in the third set against Thompson, missed the subsequent 3.5 months, and by the time he got to Barcelona his level was never truly the same

I agree with you on this, but I have the feeling that his physical condition just won't allow him to play at the professional level for much longer. It is either against Thompson or any other player. I mean, even if he had one in two sets against Thompson, he would have faced the same issue in a few matches.
It is indeed the final moment .

He looked pretty solid in his first two comeback matches in Brisbane... then it unraveled after the Thompson match. He was never the same after that and it was the beginning of a downward end :(

Dear Rafa, we will miss you forever. ❤️ You are genuine, grounded, and unbelievably charismatic, a true inspiration on and off the court.
Please, do us all a favor and team up with Roger to commentate on a Grand Slam match. Watching tennis will never be the same without you, but hearing your insights and humor would be the next best thing. Thank you, Rafa! Greetings from 🇦🇹

Fun facts: 1. Nadal lost two of his final three matches on clay and three of his final four matches overall; and 2. No player has ever lost as many matches to another player as the 31 that Nadal has lost to Djokovic.
