Amazing episode! Well done Marcus and S.L.A team! Yes definitely a glitch, Hog & Bun are the official adjudicators. You are on for a Platinum Run, even Geowizard would surely agree? Really looking forward to next weeks episode!
Hi Marcus, I have been following your straight line missions ever since the ill fated Wales 1 and I must say how inspiring I find you. Yes your missions are often unmitigated disasters, but the key thing is you learn from them, have a good laugh at yourself and try again. You truly embody a great display of character, and seeing an ‘ordinary person’ attempt something like this has made me think that I should be pushing myself more and going on a few adventures myself! Best of luck to the Straight Line Avengers!
This is such a lovely comment - thank you very much! I do my best. The most important thing is not to be worried about attempting a difficult task and failing horrifically. I feel like I've made massive progress since Wales 1 (which isn't exactly hard), which is much more satisfying. Hope you've been enjoying the series!
Wholeheartedly agree! In a way, Marcus' videos are far more inspiring than any of the 'pro' straight line missioners because what they do seems too polished and inhuman for someone like me. These videos are a perfect way to see someone becoming better at something bit by bit!!
If your shoulders hurt while backpacking there is probably something wrong with your setup. Carry the weight of the bag on the hips. Usually that means tightening the hip belt, you want it tighter than you probably think. The shoulder straps should be used more for stabilization, and not for carrying weight, and often worn somewhat loose. This is extra important if you have to use your hands for stuff like filming, holding a gps, or holding trekking poles. With your hands occupied you don't even have the opportunity to support the shoulder strap with your hands. You want to be able to essentially stand up almost straight with your bag without your shoulder straps on at all. Once you have this down you are now carrying the load with your hips and not your shoulders, and when you start noticing shoulder fatigue that is a sign to think about is your hip belt tight enough and in the correct position. The biggest thing you can do to compound the effects of properly wearing your backpack is to lower the weight of the pack. Especially important due to the nature of your mission and the fact that you are carrying filming equipment. Ultralight backpacking is where you should look for inspiration on minimizing weight. The reddit r/ultralight is a decent place to start.
Thanks for the advice. I think this was mainly due to the sheer weight of the pack - I had my hip straps tightened as much as I could, and routinely checked them to make sure they weren't coming loose. But you're right - I need to pack lighter.
A real bummer (and heart breaking) to see Tom go, but I thought at the end of the first part that it probably would be best for him to quit. Health always comes first!
Fantastic! Always love to see a new river crossing technique. I believe GeoWizard once admitted to "cleaning up" obvious glitches in the GPS trace, so I reckon you're still in the clear.
Can appreciate Tom’s joy getting a lift out back to Ullapool. My father and I attempted a walk across Scotland (not via straight line) slightly to the south (Invershiel to Beauly) 30ish years ago. The weather was awful - every little burn was a raging torrent. Everything that wasn’t a burn was a swamp. Going was so slow we were at day 1’s camp by the end of day 2 so we decided to bail. Amazingly an hour or so on the walk out we were picked up by someone with a pickup. I can remember my relief to this day!
As a supporter of your channel from your first straight line mission and constantly since, I am SO happy for you that your views are a bit better this mission (still not enough but hey)! So so well deserved! Tom, what a legend, he made a super brave and good decision to bail out, seems a really great guy. Your food snacks bag is hilarious 'like chicken food' hahaha The 'Rubble Sack Tenique' was hilarious and clever too lol and the interview in the wind IM DYING haha Honestly I can't believe how well you guys are doing compared to the first and second missions you attempted. 8.5 miles over mountains with a platinum run is really impressive. This line was very well planned and you are honestly over the most mountainous part... I have a belief that you can complete a mission finally, but you still have a very long distance remaining which could be the problem. And you're definitely still on for a platinum run!
Thanks Nooticus! Glad you're enjoying this series. I'm not sure what else I can do to increase viewer/subscriber numbers, although this time I have released my mission alongside GeoWizard and the Fieldhouses, which seems to have done some good. The team was much stronger this time and it was unfortunate that Tom had to pull out, but he was still a valuable member of the crew. We were really pleased with Day 2 in particular - we covered good ground. Stay tuned for the next episode to see how much further we get!
24:40 This is what I love most about straight line missions - this sort of problem solving. We can't just ironman ourselves over any obstacle, we have to think in this pragmatic way to solve each obstacle, and it's very cool to see you've included all those discussions
40:46 - I see GPS glitches very often on my phone's walking app. Especially if I'm eg. walking through a longish viaduct. Then the signal can put me several hundred meters off from where I really am. The "pointy" deviation (as also seen in your case) is a telltale sign.
Haha, well in fairness it's hard to find people mad enough to attempt this challenge with me! I think this team as a whole was much more competent at least.
Coping well with the usual rough terrain - big bogs above the campsite to the east IIRC, and horrible weather. Rain like that can really get you down. The moorland often requires a little maze work finding away through the bog. Already a fine achievement.
Thank you! Probably the experience from Scotland 1 (over very similar terrain) was paying dividends. Also, the camaraderie of being part of a team makes a huge difference.
can't help but feel those backpacks starting to look a lot heavier ! post apocalypse music starting to suite the landscape, not another human for miles.
your whole filming really reminds me of the lords of the rings hahah, i hope someone does a straight mission hobbit style in NZ, with no shoes and a cloak!!
@@marcusthechessteacher Oh yeah, I've seen it. My last attempt of crossing a country was Japan. You'll see much bigger dangers that we never thought about. I have learned now that you always should have help near by.
Chess, straightline missions, and wisdom about a funny sort of bravery: how can I not subscribe? (even if you do spell "straightline" as two words hyphenated)
I feel like if you have video evidence of that GPS line being wrong which is seems you do, then safe to say it's a glitch and you're fine. It doesn't make sense that he would have doubled back there anyway, having just walked it surely he followed the exact same path.
He's doing really well. Great recovery after battling through sickness on day 1too. I thought they were all great there! Really well done so far! @ian6451 watch his Wales 1mission and his journey. He's doing great. Team looks strong. Was a great day, day 2

Fantastic! Always love to see a new river crossing technique.

Yeah, I think a glitch is a likely explanation. Thanks - the rubble sacks were really handy!
Jaggy lines like that are suspect. Glitch!

Absolutely - I think this is my straight-lining angle - I want to show the viewers more of the trials and tribulations.
Certainly just as entertaining as Geowizards content! Great filmmaking this time around, enjoyed the level of editing and commentary.
Thank you very much! Glad you're enjoying the series.
The dramatic music works really well on these edits mate
Thank you!

Brilliant effort again lads. Felt for poor Tom. Genius idea for crossing shallower streams in the rubble sacks. Well done boys. Onward!
Thank you! Yeah, gutted for Tom - he'll be back...!
Nice work. I think this is the more captivating straight line mission series
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying the series.

OK, that's reassuring - thanks.
Nice one lads. Hope we get to see Tom finish on the next mission 💪💪💪
He gave it a good go, but it wasn't to be.
Marcus, what time is Part 3 dropping today please? Im trying to plan ordering a pizza to watch with it 😂
Won't be today I'm afraid - I haven't quite finished the editing. Hoping to release it on Sunday evening if I get a chance.
😭😭😭 okay thank u for replying
you need a couple of runs with a consistent team - at the moment it's like an episode of casualty where you know the new faces are going to die.
Haha, well in fairness it's hard to find people mad enough to attempt this challenge with me! I think this team as a whole was much more competent at least.

The backpacks were heavily-laden, I can tell you that...
Big fan of the straight line missioning poncho
It should be standard-issue straight-line attire!
Superb, and great use of music.
Thanks! I turned the music down a bit for this episode...
your whole filming really reminds me of the lords of the rings hahah, i hope someone does a straight mission hobbit style in NZ, with no shoes and a cloak!!
Haha, thanks! I think someone has had a go at SLM Across New Zealand. Whether they were dressed as hobbits though is a matter of opinion.
It wouldn’t be a Marcus video without a GPS glitch
At least SOMETHING must go wrong.
Definitely a platinum run still!
Thanks!
I would count this as platinum.
Thanks!
I agree that the line was within 25m
Thanks!
Bing maps has better satellite imagery than Google earth, for future reference. it also has an excellent OS layer
Noted - thanks!
It makes me want to try this line solo, but I don't have the support to get something like that done. haha
It's possible but probably quite dangerous. Check out Part 2/3 of my previous Scotland mission and you'll see why!

the song you have playing in parts of the video remind me of Metroid
I think it is Metroid-themed actually!
What GPS device do I need for a straight line mission? And how do I make the line?
Hi there, feel free to send me an email - my contact details should be on my UA-cam profile.
I'm calling it a platinum thus far
Snap. When I first saw it, I thought it was just the chap coming back to find you, but so would not really count anyway... But a glitch is a glitch
Thanks!
We thought the same thing at the time, but I feel reassured that it wasn't Will that caused it.

Thanks! Haha, well technically it's two words but I hyphenate them...
Did the scottish guy walk off the line to get a phone signal?
Good question - I'd imagine so, although the line did go up the hill anyway. A bit of a grey area really - I'll have to ask him.
I feel like if you have video evidence of that GPS line being wrong which is seems you do, then safe to say it's a glitch and you're fine. It doesn't make sense that he would have doubled back there anyway, having just walked it surely he followed the exact same path.
Yeah, quite a few people have agreed that it's a glitch, so we'll go with that!

Barely!
