    I eat my kefir grains all the time because they grow so fast. The texture is similar to jelly beans and chewy. Kefir grains had more colony forming units (CFU) than any kefir milk. Healthy and safe to eat them.

    I have a leaky gut and was getting extreme fatigue along with cramps bloating e.t.c to be honest I felt I didn't want to live anymore but a new Christian friend gave me kefir and how to make it, within four days of drinking 500 ml to a litre a day, my life and energy has returned fantastically I have not had this much energy for years praise God, I can't rate it highly enough. If I eat wheat say the most I get is loose stools I can live with that. One thing I have learnt I can't tolerate any artificial sugars in food, they are pure poison. GOD BLESS ALL.

    Here's a hint - don't poke and prod your Kefir Buds (I don't call them grains because they're not). Tap the the strainer _gently_ on the rim of the bowl or container; the kefir will sift easily through the strainer and leave the buds in the strainer. Bashing and mashing and poking them with the spoon breaks them up and can force the tiny little new buds through the mesh of the strainer.

      Breaking them up actually helps the process. It creates more surface area for the milk to touch, and they grow faster. I used to think it was too rough also, but turns out that’s not the case.

    I think a couple corrections can be made.
    Kefir doesn't care about metal unless there's copper contamination. Kefir isn't like kombucha so it's not killed by metal, and grains have a potent amount of good bacteria, I also find them palatable.

    • @cachi-7878
      @cachi-7878 2 роки тому +1

      Thank you. Many videos warn you about metal and kefir but stainless steel is perfectly fine. They also tell you to cover the jar with a cloth and rubber band. This is totally unnecessary and potentially dangerous for contamination. All the bacteria needed is already contained in the milk, there is nothing needed from the air; it is an anaerobic fermentation.

    • @mozarth
      @mozarth 2 роки тому

      @@cachi-7878 it produces CO2 as fermentation byproduct so you could end up blowing a container maybe?

    • @cachi-7878
      @cachi-7878 2 роки тому +2

      @@mozarth there is indeed CO2 created but very little in the 24h or less it takes to fully ferment the milk, If done at the proper temperatures (between 68-75F). I close the lid tight and there is a very light pressure after 24h and nothing compared to Kombucha which can break a bottle if a proper thick glass bottle is not used.

      Yes. It does seem to me that kefir grains, are heartier than we give them credit. I’ve been making kefir for about two years now. This year I stopped tiptoeing around them. I use non-aluminum metal strainers now. Sometimes I move them back-and-forth on the strainer with my fingers - clean of course - or a metal spoon to move The kefir through more quickly. really enjoy the cheese that’s made from the kefir! From 2 tablespoons of grains, I now have an overflowing bumper crop! We’re talking about 2-1/2 quarts of just grains! I will need to push the envelope a little further this evening since we won’t get to the store to get milk for two days. I’m just going to store the grains in the fridge, leaving a little kefir in each jar and filling the rest with distilled water to cover the grains. Hadn’t thought about deliberately eating them! Some have b gotten blended up in smoothies or salad dressings though.

    CABacon1, I beg to differ. Kefir grains are AWESOME in smoothies. All you do is mix them in a blender (yes the blades are metal, I know) with a small amount of liquid (just enough to get them blended). I've yet to find anything that makes things like milkshakes & smoothies creamier.

      Nicole Christian: this video is about storing kefir, so that's why it's going into the fridge. You have to "feed" the grains after about 7 days in the fridge, because after about 7 days in fridge, the grains have consumed all the lactose in the milk. I hope I haven't confused you further. Just watch the video again, listening carefully, you'll get it.

    a really good fruitfly trap is to make a cone out of paper with a hole the size of a pencil, maybe a hair smaller. cut the top off of a plastic water bottle, and put the cone inside (tape the cone first) and tape it to the bottle. no gaps, and tape the seam in the paper cone. get some dish soap, squirt a quarter teaspoon down the paper funnel.
    then get apple cider and fill up the container until there is half an inch gap between the surface of the vinegar and the tip of the funnel. its important to use apple cider vinegar. I've used balsamic, rice, white vinegars and they are not as attractive to fruit flies. The soap is a surfactant that removes surface tension in the water so that they cannot float and swim to the side. They will sink as soon as they touch the liquid. The paper cone is best as well. when you pour in the cider vinegar you'll accidentally splash in onto the paper... it helps waft the scent out, and the paper seems to attract them faster giving them something to perch on.
    I share this because I've had swarms of fruit flies in my house before, and this method will eliminate every last fruit fly in you house in under 3 days. You'll see tablespoons of dead fruit flies in there. it works. enjoy!

      ACV with the mother will attract actual flies. I had a bottle cap crack on a bottle in a grocery bag and there was spillage on my rubber mat. I kept my windows cracked to dissipate/eliminate the smell and, holy cow, you can't even understand how many flies were in my car. It was HORRIBLE. Then after I would clear the infestation out, I would park somewhere completely different and it would happen again. I thought an animal had died somewhere inside my car, for real. I finally just decided to live with the vinegar smell trapped in the car until it eventually went away and it was safe to open my windows again. Dealing with all those nasty flies was unreal.

      I didn't think so, it's kind of the consistency of buttermilk, but for me it was like a tart greek yogurt but thinner. :) Be careful if you have a yeast allergy...for me it's a migraine trigger luckily I only tried a teaspoon of the Kefir. I'm really sad I wanted to drink it. I make it for my cat. He has IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease) if anyone needs this for their cat start off slow, with 1/8 teaspoon for a few days (I did three days) then moved up to 1/4, he's on 1/4 now. Don't go fast with cats. And talk to your vet first to make sure it doesn't backfire with medications their on. I liked the taste. Sadly, no more Kefir for me. (there's six different yeasts)

      I just tastes like a thicker and sharper milk. I've never tried butter milk so can't say. The slightly lower ph makes the milk so much more palatable

    YOu took a jar out of your fridge where you said you were keeping your kefir grains alive but that they were not fermenting (because they were in the fridge). You also said that you don't make kefir in your refrigerator, that in the refrigerator you only store the grains... AND YET you also said that the white liquid you strained from the grains you gave to your friend was VERY STROG kefir because the grains had been in there for 7 days... There is a contradiction there!

      From what I read, you have to buy the first ones and they reproduce as you make the kefir. Sounds like each time you make some, you get more graains.
