If there is a better performance of the 4th, I want to hear it. I love the obvious affection between Bernstein and Zimmerman. In the first movement after KZ plays a solo part Bernstein looks at him as if to say Yeah, that was great. It reminds me of Jazz musicians who acknowledge each other after great solos. I love the 4th probably more than any other classical piece of music. It covers so many emotions - joy and sorrow, and always moves me to tears. This is a great performance by all.
I like Casadesus, probably as much for it being one of my earliest purchases with my own money as a teen as for it being a great performance. A little more dreamy and romantic in parts than Zimmerman, but still with depth and fire, and definitely very different cadenzas.
It's interesting you mention jazz, because I always think the second movement of this piece has one of the two most beautiful passages for piano ever recorded -the other being McCoy Tyner's beyond extraordinary solo in _My Favorite Things_ .
Indeed was a brilliant interpretation and performance of the G Major. Loved how Bernstein signaled Zimmerman who was in charge, when Zimmerman started conducting. I don’t want to take away from his brilliant conducting skills. Zimmerman is a brilliant conductor/Pianist. As I read some of the comments I agree that this was a splendid performance. To me, what makes Zimerman about the top Pianist is that he plays every note with the most intense sensibility to what Beethoven would have played. He can play loud and bright but, what separates he from the rest is his ability to touch the notes with such delicacy that they can just be heard. That's a perfect touching pianist. When I was being taught Piano. My teacher said that Franz Liszt used to play each note with each finger from as quiet as he could gladually getting as loud as he could , then go back in reverse with each finger. It used to take up hours out of my day just to complete this exercise. Now, I get to watch it in it's perfection.

You can see how Bernstein was satisfied with the orchestra at 1:20. He started to smile and continued.
