  • 2024 Honda HR-V Review: Practicality Over Performance
The Honda HR-V has been a staple in the subcompact crossover segment for years, offering buyers a blend of utility, efficiency, and value. For 2024, the HR-V carries over largely unchanged after a full redesign for 2023. While it doesn't set any performance benchmarks, the HR-V makes a strong case as an affordable, functional crossover for daily driving.
    No Thrills Under The Hood
Powering the 2024 HR-V is Honda's familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. The engine feels strained when asked for passing power, managing a leisurely 0-60 mph time of 9.4 seconds in our testing. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) doesn't do the powertrain any favors either, with sluggish responses and the usual rubber-band effect under acceleration.
The HR-V's on-road demeanor is far more impressive than its straight-line performance. Thanks to its Civic underpinnings, the little crossover handles nimbly with responsive steering and a composed ride quality. Models with the larger 18-inch wheels do transmit some harsh impacts into the cabin, but overall comfort remains a strong suit.
A Spacious Cabin With Quirky Styling
Where the HR-V really shines is interior packaging and versatility. The boxy shape translates to an airy cabin with ample headroom for all passengers. Rear legroom is especially generous, allowing adults to fit easily. Behind the rear seats, there's a useful 24 cubic feet of cargo space that expands to 60 cubes with the seats folded.
Material quality is about average for the segment, with plenty of hard plastics but solid overall construction. The cabin layout is logically arranged if a bit drab in design, with a straightforward 7- or 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system front and center. Slick tricks like a household-style power outlet and removable rear parcel shelves add practicality.
Value And Efficiency Remain Key Highlights
Though its on-road performance leaves something to be desired, the HR-V still serves up impressive fuel efficiency. Front-wheel-drive models achieve up to 32 mpg highway, with our all-wheel-drive tester managing 30 mpg on the highway in real-world testing. That real-world result is impressive and a testament to the crossover's frugality.
Value is another strong point for the HR-V. With a
starting price of $25,950, the base LX trim undercuts rivals like the Mazda CX-30 and Volkswagen Taos. Even the top EX-L model with AWD rings in at a reasonable $29,500. Factor in Honda's reputation for reliability and resale value, and the HR-V makes a strong case as an affordable long-term ownership proposition.
The 2024 Honda HR-V doesn't shatter any performance barriers, but for many buyers, that won't matter much. With its spacious, well-packaged cabin, efficient powertrains, and outstanding value, Honda's subcompact crossover delivers the practicality and convenience that matter most in this segment. If you can look past the underwhelming acceleration, the HR-V remains one of the smarter picks among affordable crossovers.
