I have almost never heard such a great lecture about all new fields of ham radio activity which make it much more interesting and really complex. Thank you so much Joe and let me congratulate to those who made this video available world wide.

Thanks for capturing Dr. Taylor. Great presentation. And, thanks for audio by using a microphone on Joe. So many of these types of presentation videos use the microphone on the camera at the rear of the room which ends up being crap.

Got my call sign this year. Had two contacts by voice at first and then tried FT8, never looked back. The setup alone was a bit hair pulling for me but I'm approaching 500 qso's.
I think this is great for amateur radio. Wonderful extension

Thanks for posting this outstanding presentation. I agree with K7AGE about the quality audio pickup. I'm also impressed by the very nice alternating / interleaving of video (Dr Taylor) with the presentation slides.

4:45 Once upon a time, many years ago, a well known and popular local ham said (about another local ham, who was also on the frequency [2m]) something like, "Don't listen to him; he's got his initials as his callsign." The implication was that the ham with the vanity callsign was thus a noob (such callsigns-with-one's-initials being a new concept at the time) and therefore shouldn't be trusted to provide sage advice on technical topics. To be clear, it was all in jest and very very very funny at the time (became famous locally). So, my local ham friend, meet Joe Taylor, K1JT. 🙂

Great video! I took your ham and computer (Acorn!) classes in 1989, and just got back into the hobby. Still teaching me...

Great presentation Professor! Remembering Dayton 2002 and the sound od circling quasars. FT8 is so popular now that small upadate of DXCC prefixes would be welcomed by us dx-peditioners, both fox nad hounds. 73 de Mario, Z6/S56A Type 2, NH7/N1YU in 1996.

    Ft8 won't work with Icon 7300

Ernie ... I don't have a 7300 but several of my friends do and they are running FT8 all the time. One who lives near Seattle worked a station in South Africa a few days ago. There is a setting in a menu that has to be turned on to do data. Maybe someone who knows can tell us what it is.

The WSJT-X modes including Ft8 and Ft4 work very well on an IC7300. A USB cable between the 7300 and your computer handles inbound and outbound audio and CAT. To set up audio on your 7300 go to Menu-Set-Connectors-Data Mod-USB. Choose the radio's CODEC as the sound card in audio settings in WSJT-X.

It is time that these datamodes that do not convey any useful information were banned from the HF spectrum. Any datamode should be able to pass a useful message. One of the justifications for amateur radio is emergency communications. These modes cannot be used and therefore have no meaningful purpose. Let's have a standard where we require at least message capabilities in a mode before it is acceptable for awards. This mode panders to the ego of the creator and is killing amateur radio as we know it.

Lighten up. It's just another mode. How much "useful" information is exchanged on 75M phone?

      Hi Graham.
      You wrote:
"One of the justifications for amateur radio is emergency communications" - that's right. *One* of the justifications. Scientific research is another, arguably more important one. WSJTX is a perfect example of this. It sounds like you prioritize emcomms, but you fail to realize that other hams might have other priorities. To call for banning a perfectly legal mode that doesn't affect other hams is curmudgeonly at best. These modes are narrow band and do not cause undue QRM (when used correctly).
When it comes to the "killing of amateur radio", it's people who try and ban exciting new modes that attract desperately needed new blood that are really causing the damage.

And how much information is exchanged with a dxpedition? Callsign 599, 599 TU, TU - next!
