It's over 20 years old now, is it being scrapped? I never realised when I snapped a ship in a pic in 1997, that it would go on to feature in UA-cam videos, but, I have since double checked, and it was the Algoway that I photographed, which was just co-incidentally showing some form of scale in a pic I was taking at the Welland Canal... 20 years later, I see they're getting rid of it now? Although I was pleasantly surprised to see it here still, as I never expected that!
I once saw the Algoway sailing in Lake Ontario when I looked out my window. I wouldn't know the name of this ship if it weren't for some ship tracker thing.
The sad scrapping of the Algoway finished up within the past month in Port Colborne Ontario. She and Algorail met their demise here during the past 18 months. The Anderson is in long term layup until there is enough demand to bring her back out again. She has sat idle for nearly three years now. The longer she sits, the greater the chance we won't see her sail again.
@@badge_bad3211 Spirit is gone. I've heard that the Algoma Transport will be the next to be replaced, I would assume the Guard and Discovery would be the next after that.
Oh really. Got a cool video of her entering Duluth Harbor. Thank you. Love the old lakers like a lot of folks and sad to see them heading into salvage but she had a good run i would imagine.
I certainly agree that Algoma Central has been disposing of some classic lake freighters lately. Thank God that the US has not yet repealed the Jones Act, which motivates US fleets to refurbish and continue to use the older boats. Otherwise classic ships like the Anderson and and Jackson would be endangered by Chinese or European replacements.
Sad to see these ships go. Some of them are being cut into barges, and some are being cut into... Well, Scrap. Im a few years late to this vid, and i don't know her fate, but she probably was a good one' to the lakes.
Brings back great memories...I actually served in her as a navigation cadet from April to November 1976

I heard it was sold.
The Algoway was built in 1972 and served for 45 years.

Saw her come into Duluth Harbor in Dec 2016.
Horses like the Algoway built that company. Too bad they don't paint them. Algoma Central saves their nickels to build ships made in China.

The Arthur m Anderson still sails and this ones being scrapped? On second thought I just saw the close up.

Algoma Central is doing a fleet renewal program so they are replacing the older boats with more efficient and modern boats. Its sad
I hope they won't get rid of Discovery and Guardian as well of Spirit...my dad sailed on the Discovery way back in 1996 when it was still Malinska...
