First I’m so glad you were moved by Foster and was interested to hear your perspective. As someone who spent half her childhood in foster care, I gritted my teeth through this novella and found it very Pollyanna. It’s just so unrealistic and the girls lack of feelings for her biological family ugh…the only way this story could be saved for me is if there’s a 2nd novella and the child grows up to be a psychopath due to her early neglect 😂 I totally get why you found this refreshing as books like Demon Copperhead can be relentlessly negative but sadly realistic. I just prefer a medium ground as I think Foster, fostered the trope that children “just want to be loved”. Yes they do but it’s so much more complex than that. This short story made things very simplistic for the child particularly. Soap box over, I’m not mad at it, it’s a nice, fairy tale story great for Christmas time. I’m sure if I wasn’t a foster, I may have loved it 🤪 I appreciate you, thanks for all you do!
@@TiggerTellsTales ahhh maybe that’s why i usually see foster care depicted in more of a negative light! it did cross my mind that it seemed more “fairy tale”-like but i couldn’t tell if it was due to her young age or the temporary relief from her other situation, but hearing your perspective is very interesting! thanks so much for commenting 💗
So excited to see that you've read The Invisible Life! It's honestly one of my top reads this year, an absolute 5 stars but i absolutely agree that it could have been somewhat shorter & I thought the ending was perfect as well! I also love your channel and your selection of books that I don't usually gravitate towards but am definitely intrigued by ❤
i tried reading hot milk but i had to dnf, i was so confused and i found it boring, but i read thirst for salt by Madeleine Lucas right afterwards and it had similiar themes of mother and daughter relationship and the beachy setting too which i really enjoyed. i’m so glad i read it straight after because everything i was missing in hot milk i liked in thirst for salt. Loved this wrap up and have definitely added shuggle bain to my tbr !

Another book recommendation that covers post-partum depression and a beautiful description of the complex internal mechanisms of women is Black Milk by Elif Shafak 🖤. Highly recommend.
I thought salt slow was a five star book but I know what you mean about trying to rate short story collections - nowadays I try to rate each story and if more than half are five stars then the book gets five stars. Anyhow, I loved Julia Armfield’s writing and imagery and went on to read Our Wives under the Sea which I loved. I must get to her new novel soon.
I start reading the yellow wallpaper and I didn't read it actually as a read , I read it as book to expand my vocabulary as non- native and then I feel no this soo good I want to read it as a read so I put it down and I'm planning to read it this fall

I wanted to love The Invisible Life of Addie Larue so bad! I thought the author’s writing was beautiful, but I was very bored with the book itself.
I get this - my best friend who read it also got very bored with it and DNF'd it so you're not alone!
My best friend and I felt the same. I feel like al the hype w book can get can almost be damaging because the expectations get set impossibly high
