I also read Giovanni’s Room in August okay this is my reading list and I read 9 books this month - 5 ⭐️ The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak which is a fiction story about explores love, loss, and identity through the lens of a divided Cyprus, where a fig tree becomes a symbol of memory and healing. - 4.5 ⭐️ Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon which is a fiction story about a girl with a rare illness who falls in love with her new neighbor and begins to question the boundaries of her sheltered life (i read this book when I was a kid I’m an young gen-z so it’s not an classic or anything but loved re-reading this book) - 3 ⭐️ The Sisterhood by Courtney Thorsson an non-fiction book about the powerful community of Black women writers who shaped literary and cultural history through their collective work and support for one another - 4.75 ⭐️ Funny Story by Emily Henry is a fiction story that is an romantic comedy about love, grief, and unexpected connections that arise between two people navigating life’s challenges. - 4 ⭐️ Black Butterflies by Priscilla Morris is an fiction story about an artist's survival and resilience during the siege of Sarajevo, as her world is torn apart by war. - 5 ⭐️ In Memoriam by Alice Winn which is an fiction story of love and friendship between two young soldiers during the horrors of World War I. - 4.75 ⭐️ Conversations on Love by Natasha Lunn is an non-fiction book that explores the complexities of love through personal reflections and interviews, examining how we find, nurture, and sustain it. 4.5 ⭐️ - The Wedding People by Alison Espach (I got this for my first ever BOTM) is a fiction story that is about a woman who plans to end her life after it comes crumpling down and she visits this 5 star hotel, and miraculous ends up being the only guest there not part of the wedding party for an bridezilla but finds out there’s more to her and life than she’s ever known 5 ⭐️ - Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin is an fiction story of an American man in Paris who grapples with his sexuality and identity while in a tumultuous relationship with an Italian man. But this overall a very great month of reading it was nice to find many solid 4 star books and a few 5 stars, I hop one or two of these books from my list peak your interest but I think you will like In Memoriam, Black Butterflies, and The Island of Missing Trees based off your reading taste

My recommendation for you is No Land to Light On by Yara Zgheib. It follows the story of a Syrian couple living in the US as refugees and how their lives are tragically altered by the sudden travel ban of 2017. The writing was incredibly lyrical and the shift from past to present was such a great way to engage the reader.

Giovanni’s Room might be the saddest book I read this year. Just thinking about it makes my heart ache. The narrator of this book - David - ties with June from Yellowface as the most terrible protagonists I’ve seen in literature.

As an American who doesn’t read contemporary romance, are the ones written by non-American authors truly better/different? Wondering in case I should try some out. 😅

to be honest I don't really read romance as a genre in general so I'm probs not the best person to recommend romance authors lol

Absolutely agree with what you said about American romance authors! The banter is horrendous I need some mark corrigan esque dry humour 😅
