    New beekeeper here. This is the first year. Of all the beekeeping videos I have watched yours are the best and most informative. Performed my first split. Thought I killed the bees until I watched your series. Checked my split today. Saw an emergency cell that looks like it has a larva. Feel so much better. Feeling like an expectant mom. Lol.

      Thanks. I thought it would be good to show how stuff happens when you least expect it and what to do about it, than always showing perfect scenarios.

    best example of catching and marking a queen I have seen, after watching many hours of beekeepers on you tube

    Thank you for your response. Where do you get those? I have been a beekeeper for many years and never marked my queens, but my sixteen year old son has started working with me and I thought it best to help him out with a marked queen. I have enjoyed your videos and I am already changing some of my practices because of your influence. It is good to have a variety of ideas from everybody to see what one works the best for you.

    Hey David. I'm trying to find an affordable bee veil and will protect both the front and back side of neck. Where did you get the one your wearing?

      I'll do it soon. I do have a video on it. Search in UA-cam David Burns Swarm. Choose the one with big yellow words, "Catch A Swarm"

    Thanks for all you video's David they are very helpful--at 12.07 i spotted the Queen smack in the middle of the frame,you must have heard me shouting as you found her shortly after.

    another great video. i know your frustration with this Illinois weather (im a bit northwest of you), i too was forced to split and am still a bit worried on my new queen's status. maybe this weekend i will be able to tell lol. weather permitting.

      Should be fine, just slower than normal.

    Do you checkerboard in empty frames in between the drawn out brood comb to get the bees to draw out more comb.

    • @beeteam6481
      @beeteam6481 7 років тому

      Not so much. It breaks up the brood nest too much for my comfort zone. But sometimes I do.

    David, I've noticed a certain pattern in the flight of your bees at the beginning of the video and right away I suspected you had a queen. Haha .. I've noticed with my bees every time I do splits they seem to have a very particular flight and pattern when they have a queen vs queen-less... Am I crazy? LOL Question... I noticed you don't seem to use inner covers... Any reason why?

    • @beeteam6481
      @beeteam6481 7 років тому

      I have yet to observe a flight pattern indicating the presence or absence of the queen. The bees inside the hive are certainly more calm with a queen. Inner covers are most useful in the winter, but I use my winter-bee-kind invention instead of the inner cover for winter.

      BeeTeam6 by observing my hives numerous times it is my belief that there is a different type of activity in the front of the hive. I also notice less defense going on when there's no queen.

  • @ccoody1

    David, exactly what kind of marker are you using?

    • @beek
      @beek  7 років тому

      it is the commercially designated queen marking been. I've tried everything else and nothing else works. Don't waste your time.

    David, have you ever seen drones mate a queen? I believe I captured it on video!

    • @beeteam6481
      @beeteam6481 7 років тому

      It would have to be 20-80 feet in the air. If you captured that, you are awesome. It has been captured by many people by placing the queen on a motorized arm and releasing drones. I think I saw one from 1958. But I have entertained the idea.

  • @kojanbarzan946
    @kojanbarzan946 6 років тому

    If the queen died or I killed her because she is weak, do I have to bring a new queen or the bees will produce a new one?

    • @kojanbarzan946
      @kojanbarzan946 6 років тому

      What if? , and how much time the hive will live without a queen? thank you.

    Suggestion. The flow is on in Champaign County. How about shaking a frame of nectar for the camera. Did one yesterday and wow.

    • @beek
      @beek  7 років тому

      Sorry, I cringe when I see people shake out the nectar from a frame. All that hard work having to be repeated. My viewers would protest! :)

    David, how many queens have you rolled, killed, by pulling frames from the middle like that ? Very bad for beginners to see.
