  • Lisa Gade reviews the HP Elite Dragonfly 13" premium convertible Ultrabook. This very compact and light laptop comes in a striking blue color, and it has a CNC magnesium casing. It has 360 degree hinges and your choice of full HD, 4K and privacy screens all supporting pen and touch. This is the high end business alternative to the HP Spectre x360, and it's passed several MIL-Spec tests, has a self-healing BIOS, optional Intel vPro quad core processors and a fingerprint scanner and Windows Hello IR camera. Note: HP went with Intel 8th gen CPUs because vPro isn't yet available in 10th gen CPUs.

    So this feels like a business version of the Asus Zenbook Flip S UX-370UA which I own. What amazes me about the HP are the extra ports and the lightest configuration being 2.1 pounds instead of the already svelte 2.4 pound Asus. That said, I scored my Asus for $750 a month ago, so I’m just excited that convertibles are getting closer to breaking the 2 pound barrier. I know which company and tech reviewer to follow for that day next year when I inevitably replace this Asus. Keep up the good work Lisa!

      Just some feedback/buying advice to tack on to OPs comment. My 13z gets wayy too hot, if you're going to buy one don't get the Ryzen 7 model or anything above the equivalent of an i5, and driver support out of the box for Ryzen, specifically for touchscreen has been hit or miss at best, a lot of things fail and the build quality is okay at best, it is a great performer otherwise, and would recommend for the power in such a portable package, but you may be better off just buying an XPS 13 7390 or other convertible if you can afford it.

      @@bigmike9947 I have the exact same laptop, hp envy with ryzen 7, 16 gig ram 512 ssd. beside the heating issue I also found when I use the laptop in tablet mode for writing notes. it is poorly designed in the hinges. it is so sharp that it cut me twice. so I always have to use it from the camera side.
      when im writing my notes after some time it just goes to sleep. I think it doesn't count my note taking as an activity and goes to sleep. which is weird. still I love the laptop :)

    • @bigmike9947
      @bigmike9947 4 роки тому

      @@trickyabb Yeah, I did not have a good time using it in tablet mode when the touchscreen did work, and as a side note, the back panel on the screen dented when I picked it up off of my desk and flipped it into tablet mode, so now I have a serious divot on the back of my screen. Which is an issue with build quality in general and not this specific configuration. I do like this laptop but it has a laundry list of defects and issues that can't be ignored, even if I wanted to ignore them.

    • @j.johnson6548
      @j.johnson6548 4 роки тому

      @@bigmike9947 Yes, I do agree this laptop has it's issues, but there other 2 and 1 laptops on the market with greater issues. I have the Ryzen 7 version. My biggest concern is the device's fan screams in tablet mode. The aluminum chassis and heat combination causes to rubber feet to melt right off. I believe the Lenovo 700 series are better for tablet mode users because writing notes feel normal, no heat issue, and fan noise is quiet. However, these laptops aren't as reliable as the HP Envy 360 series. I have returned 2 Lenovo 700 series within a 2 week period for screen flickering issues (Thank goodness it was still under Best Buy return policy). I've accidently dropped this Envy about 3x's from various heights between 2-3 feet and it still keeps working no issues. I've even played AAA games, analyzed billions of rows of business data, and use it to display to multiple monitors without experiencing any hiccups. I don't think there are any laptops at that price point that can offer that kind of performance and durability simultaneously. Yes, its going to have its issues but this device can take abuse and still work years later. Priceless

    Just bought one of these as a study case for my office. Might consider mass deploying them next year. Only bummer is the current rollout are a bunch of T4x0s thinkpads, which are 14 inchers. Users might not like moving down to a 13, but it does greatly increase portability...

    I saved a few of these (1used, 4 new and yes they are all 1000nit screen model 256ssd, 16 gb ram, core i7...) from becoming scrap. As of mid 2024, it's still a pretty decent and useful laptop. Should be suitable for most of everyday uses (some basic editing*, browsing, streaming, etc). As for gaming, Xbox cloud gaming, both browser and app, runs nicely. Google plays Paw Patrol... not so much. So if you happened to run across one of these in 2024 at a reasonable price, go for it. Just be sure to keep in mind that this was marketed towards corporate and business use.

    I bought this few days back in 792$, its new unused box open hp elite dragonfly base mode i5 8th gen, 8gb, 256gb. Reason for being cheap is market here in pakistan. Laptops are prices according to generation of cpu, if its 8th gen, it is cheaper than spectre, no matter if its 2020 model.

    The Dragonfly has been really well reviewed on lots of websites, but I still think it's far too expensive for what it is. Strip away all the 'high end business' marketing nonsense, and it's an ultrabook; plain and simple. And for $2000, so much more can be bought. A fully decked out XPS 13 with 10th Gen Processor would be the same or less, the (supposedly) brilliant Mac 16, Asus Zenbook Duo (at a push) and my personal favourite, a second hand Dell XPS 15 with an i9 core (saw one recently for £1400 in the UK)
    Not to mention the Surface Book 3 on the horizon...

    A laptop targeted for business executives (who will use it 95% of the time doing productivity) it would have been more useful to have 3:2 display.

    Had bad experience with 2 of my HP machines and would not buy any more HP machines. They knew there was problem with the design making heating up the VGA a chip and when reached out to HP customer service to fix the machine they wanted half the $400 to fix it which is half of the actual machine and would only provide 90 day warranty on the fix. Sorry that is not acceptable customer service when you know the problem was with the original design.

    Hp seems to have been influenced by the LG Gram for this model no? What are the main differences between a LG gram and a Dragonfly ?

    Is this dual channel memory interface design or single channel? Always a confusion with these onboard memory laptops

    LG Gram is the better option and some should even consider Spectre x360 10th gen over this model.

    I wish they would make the elite 1050 into dragonfly 15 inch version and gtx 1650 with a U processor for maximum battery life. Sigh.
