    Good buys! I had an 87 SS in high school, they were underpowered but boy could it cruise and looked the part as a cruiser. Getting both a Monte and a GN is a hell of a score, Ive always liked them both.

    Nice! My parents still have their original '83 base model MC (not SS). Only thing replaced in it was the engine about 30 years ago because it dropped a piston. I paid to have it up and running last year and the guy said it was in good shape for having sat for 15 years. It needs the vinyl top replaced, I want to replace the radio and paint, but otherwise I'm leaving it as is. It's a rarity.

    I would vote to keep that time capsule stock. I know it's not a power house, but they did have a top speed of around 142. That should stay stock and just a cruiser, but will still watch if you decide to do the swap.

  • @danm2422

    I’m all for the 383 stroker! That’s exactly what I’d swap in one too, I’d put a 5 speed or 6speed tho but that’s just me. That 383 is gunna have a great chop to it, put a nice full header back exhaust too Randy.

  • @vanmandad
    @vanmandad 10 місяців тому +6

    It's nice as an original but it'd also be a great resto-mod candidate. You could buy a slightly used LS engine and transmission, do a swap, switch out the rear end, brakes, etc. I don't know how popular the SS's are in Oklahoma, but here in North Carolina everybody wants one. No matter what you decide to do with it, you've made a great purchase. 👍🇺🇸😎

    Maybe the air pressure being so high helped keep the tires round. I have a c4 corvette that I only drive in the summer and it takes several hundred miles to get the tires round. Someone told me to put high air pressure in them before parking to avoid flat spots. I was skeptical, but it may actually work

    As soon as I saw the inspection sticker on the windshield I knew where it was from. I lived in Concord about the time the car was sold at Banks. Even if it was stored for 20 years it's surprising it has so little rust. An interesting project with the new motor and transmission and a future owner can put it back the way it was if they want. No junk yard scavenging needed. Thank you for a great video. Power tour should be extra interesting next year.

    Randy, send those original wheels out to be refurbished. They are very rare and desirable. I would leave those on because they set the car apart as being the newest model of the Monte. When you switch the wheels the car will look like an older model. Yes I know the taillights are different.

    Changing the motor will not hurt the value at all. When I did the one that I had I went for the ZZ4 350 cubic inch motor from jegs and put all the original valve covers etc air cleaner just so it looks stock. But either way sounds like it's going to be a good build and you did not get hurt on the price as far as I'm concerned

    • @abolishwelfare
      @abolishwelfare 10 місяців тому +3

      I put a 454 in my ‘85. Armchair “experts” told me it would ruin it’s value. The car had 94,000 miles and had been repainted, so it wasn’t like it was showroom clean 15k mile time capsule. Never mind that every single SS had the same L69 305, so there’s nothing rare or unusual about the power plant. I immediately started getting approached at cruise-ins and car shows about selling the car. The offers were significantly higher than anything I was offered when it was stock.

    • @2DogsVlogs
      @2DogsVlogs 10 місяців тому

      Agreed. The Monte has miles, repainted and far from original. I suspect the engine has been swapped anyway but Randy can check that. Would be annoying to store the running gear if it's not even original. A worked 350 or bored 383 would be good, but I'd like to see a 350 supercharge in this heavy boat.

    Monte SS was the first car I ever purchased as a teenager. It has been my unicorn since. I still own one today and I’m 40 now. I know them like the back of my hand. The gn has always been a dream car for me. I also have the 96 impala ss. A gn would be a dream complete collection lol. Anyway the key issue your having is common with them all. Adjusting the linkage always fixed it for me but the easier way of getting it out for me when they do that is to just turn the column with your hands and if you were putting it in park with a column shift. I’m thinking because I look these up so much UA-cam recommended your channel but I’m glad it did I’m subscribing today.

    Since you are asking for personal thoughts on what you should do, I think you should swap in a 383 stoker, different transmission and exhaust. Get the paint and stripes right, then have some fun with it. Definitely an awesome car and cannot wait to see what all you do to it Randy. Love your content, entertaining and informative. Stay awesome! Oh cannot wait to see the Grand National.

    I love this car. If I did not have my Lincoln Mark VII, I would like to have one of these. Congrats on the purchase.

    As a temporary set up for the exhaust before swapping the engine put a set of vibrant bottle mufflers and a set of flowmaster outlaws

    You could swap carburetors/ Manifold. Might need hood scoop.
    Dual Exhaust - No cat.
    Partial Engine rebuild new Cam.
    Turbo????
    Could make a difference.

    Find yourself an 87 Grand Prix 2+2 and you’ve got the GM Trifecta, also love your plan for the Monte Carlo, too bad it wasn’t the Aerocoupe they’re more desirable. Sell the tires and rims as well, they’ll fetch a pretty penny to someone who wants to restore a Monte Carlo

    Man I'm all for your choice on the upgrades. 383 stroker is far superior to that anemic 305. I remember test driving these cars new. They had no power. Don't worry about no vision haters. Keep on Rockin'.

    Good afternoon Randy! I would do the paint, striping and refinish the original stock wheels. KEEP THE ORIGINAL LOOK. However, I would definitely swap the engine for the 383!!!

    You can't hurt the value of the Monte. Beautiful car. Love them. GM rear wheel drive v8. The last of the fuul frames also. Do what ever you want and give it a replay if it needs it when your done with the drive train. It's thar or do a complete reato., but it doesn't need it. It'll look great and kick ass with 400=425 horse with some Flowmaster. You know what time it is!

      You absolutely can hurt its value… these are becoming collectible and if this one is as original as it sounds, that’s where its value it. Most of these were hacked up back when new… no need to hack up survivors today

    Build it Randy!!! I remember sitting in one of theses in a show room when I was a kid. The 383 would make it as fast as it looked!

    For your UA-cam channel an engine swap will be very cool and interesting. However. I love originality so from that standpoint its sad. But you do what you do and we will all enjoy watching. Also, wouldn't the original owner know if that is the original motor? Look forward to the series
