  • The Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Mark Harper MP, officially opened phase two of the Dawlish sea wall today. It was great to see such a good turnout on the sea wall.
    The work is part of a £165 million South West Resilience Programme and delivers on a Government pledge to create a more resilient railway for Dawlish and the southwest.

    And thanks from many of us who have gotten to know Dawlish through this intriguing project and the remarkable coverage from BEACH CAMs!! For it is truly one of Britain’s most beautiful spots (and has trains!!!).

    Well done everyone who had a hand in securing the railway for the safe passage of trains and improving the pedestrian way alongside it enabling its use for everyone, walkers, runners, cyclists, mobility scooters and pushchairs etc. Thank you all - you must all be so proud. Thanks also to Neil and friends for documenting it all so comprehensively for us all.

    What can I say? So impressed by everything about this project. Shows how projects can be done and successfully brought to finality. Thanks too, to Neil for his informative recording of all the historical moments to create a resource for future posterity. Thanks Neil. Regards Don McZealand.

    Simply magnificent a great project completed by the coming together of the communities and the agencies in overcoming those terrible times. Neil and Jack are to be specially thanked for all their work in brining us all the updates as the work has progressed. Someone has already mentioned it but their work in bringing us footage of all the works should be recognised by an industry award. I am so pleased for Dawlish and the wider community it is a wonderful place to holiday, something I have done and it has a special place in my heart.
    Bravo Dawlish!

    I’ve really enjoyed watching the videos of all the splendid re-building work which has taken place in the last few years. Well done. I just hope that the new resilient structure does not weaken the case for (re)building an alternative rail route to the south west.

    Jack It was nice to see your team orange army workers to bring this sea wall to the end. Working in all hours day & night also in some foul weather& in the cold winter months.
    Who will keep the beach stones out of the Brook near the walkway, as it is already nearly full of beach stone.
    Now just have to finish the lifts. Notice the crane was back at the weekend but not the 750 tonnes crane this time.

    • @andrewreynolds4949
      @andrewreynolds4949 Рік тому +1

      It’s designed so the brook continuously washes out its own channel

    • @cargy930
      @cargy930 Рік тому +1

      The tidal conditions will always bring stones into the basin area. There's no stopping that. But, as the other poster has mentioned above, it's designed so that the normal river flow will wash them out again when there is sufficient flow.

    Well it all came together in the end, and how interesting to watch as the job progressed. Well done to all the lads working all weather's, and especially to Neil of Dawlish Beach Cams for the superb coverage of this project, and Jack of Bam Nuttall for his informed input, a great team . It is a superb piece of engineering which I was fortunate to see for myself a month ago. Definitely a must see experience 😊experience.

    The DfT want a pat on the back for funding this essential work, but what the people of Cornwall and Devon deserve is for the line to be electrified and train frequencies to be increased. Defending the coast from the increased risks caused by climate change should be the first step, but let's keep the orange army down there, electrify the entire area and buy a fleet of new trains with sliding--step technology (similar to the 777 trains that Merseytravel have bought).

    David Cameron drove forward the reopening of the line and has had a part to play ,allot was muted that if he had remained in power the possibility of reopening the total northern route was floated ,Gieorge Osbourne was a fan of the idea,

    It really amazes me. How to spoil the ship for an hahpeth of tar.
    With the millions which have been spent on the supports for the railway and station.
    Here we have dignitaries alike praising the works before a podium covered in network badges.
    What stands out like a sore thumb. “The rusty railway bridge “ that network rail or others are too mean to give a good de-rust and coat of paint.
