I’ll leave the spline cutting to the professionals…. You.. My machines are for small Jobs.. you definitely think outside the box Max. I always learn something from your videos. I want to say thank you. I hope you receive this with sincerest gratitude and appreciation. Thank you sir. I truly appreciate and enjoy watching your content. 👍🏻
Thank you very much for taking us with you on this fascinating journey. This was awesome and I learned a tot from your explanations. You are a great teacher.
Nice job on that. I must say, lovely as she is, if my wife ever brought a snack out to the shop for me in the middle of the day, I would definitely suspect something was amiss....Dave
That's a great video Max. I particularly liked how you reference the splines by using a 4 Jaw Chuck, I haven't seen that before. A learning experience for me. Cheers SteveO
Excellent video on how to properly machine splines and to keep each spline end in time. Looks like a shaft for a combine head or thresher. I also like your monster shaft setup spanning across several machines to machine the shaft ends.
Excellent job Max, I think the wobbly spacers on the Arbor are done on purpose to show rotation, safety. The farmer should be happy to get the combine back in action.
Another great effort Max, that spline ended up fitting like a finger in a bum. 😜😂 You’d have to be happy with that outcome. You did get it done despite the hiccups along the way, you persevered and overcame. Signs of a true tradesman, never give up & never say die. I can see a return to the JFMT lathe in our videos presentations coming up in future weeks.
Thanks for sharing, Max. It would cost more than twice for shipping to the Americas but it looks fantastic. Great job on the splines, awesome fit. Oh great audible play call on the Ruberg setup on the little lathe.
I would love to have that old drill press, but the shipping cost would break the bank. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and videos with the rest of us! Cheers from the USA.
Nice job Max. A little story about my own spline cutting adventure. I cut a 27-tooth spine 5" long on a differential shaft for a rear end to lock the two spider gears together with a single point tool ground to an involute profile in a fly cutter arrangement. It came out great. Mind you, this was not a paying job, just for myself for my mini bulldozer project. It took me a long time of course but the end result was great. Cheers
Excellent wrap-up to the project Max, lot of fiddley details and setups.. As always thanks for bringing us along. Bummer about the electrical issues with the big lathe.. If I lived a little closer I'd be right over to help you sort it out, that's right up my ally. I trust you'll crack it in no time.. ATB...Cheers....
G'Day As an American i call them A Spider and thats what i hear them called here. Never heard the term Catshead . looks like a shaft for a Combine Head . Great Video series on Splines sir
Amazing work Max. You truly are a master tradesman. You should seriously think about teaching apprentices. Your knowledge needs to be passed on to students and teachers mate. Cheers Aaron 👍🍻
Lol , i would probably get into trouble now days for being down the pub every day at lunch time for a counter lunch & a couple of coldies ! Just like the old days when we were apprentices on block release at tech !!! 👍
Good job creatively accomplished. That length of job is a bastard, eh. Haven’t done a spline for years, Last one was an internal using a slotting head on a turret mill with a hand sharpened HSS cutter. Talk about sneak up on it! That drill press is a beast!!
Sausage, cheese and pickles are a classic combination. And while they're great when cutting splines they are even better when drinking beer. I think I'll have all four later today. Thanks for the inspiration Max. Oh yeah, the part turned well too. Good job on all fronts. Ken
G'day Max. Excellent job, everything on camera appeared to just fall into place. Just shows the amount of setup that had to be done to get to do one spline, let alone turn the shaft around & re index the other side. You could even call it a Masterclass in Spline cutting. Thanks.
The fit just doesn’t get any better than that. You’re absolutely right, the setup has to be spot on with a long spline like that. The errors compound quickly. Hope you find something simple on the Heron electrics.
I like seeing videos like this that go into detail about how to do complex setups. To me the setup is 90% of the job. If the setup is wrong you are wasting your time
Brilliant content Max. Removable indexed tailstock, the four jaw chuck as a reference. The small lathe set up after your big lathe threw the towel in. A few choice words off camera lol. Great result in the end. Cheers Tony
you are truly spoilt. If I get anything it's hot tongue, cold shoulder and duck under the table. Love your work keep the vids coming P.S. Just showed my wife what you got and that she has to lift her game when i'm in the shed and her reply must not be written
Hi Max, Fantastic work as always. I love doing jobs like this where you have to think outside the box to achieve the required goal, the only drawback is the arsehole stood behind you asking when it will be finished. Best wishes, Mal.
That Herbert production drill actually looks like a really nice example, most of them are well past it nowadays and with the multi position turret it would be more useful for small batch production work, just a shame there isn't a lot of that work left. The limited throat depth is a problem when your using one as a general purpose drill, better off with a big gear head drill. I did own a 4 head production drill for a while, only 1 head ran reliably, it needed new electrics really. It was more use as a convient adjustable height workbench than as a drilling machine.
Thanks . I believe it has some drive issues in the turret . The main rotary switch might fit my Herbert capstan lathe , i hope ! It has a badge & machine number on it , cast in a brass plate . Property of Alfred Herbert Ltd , may have been one of their factory ones . 👍
Super nice job. . Sorry your lathe is giving you a fuss. . Hopefully, it's an easy fix. . Fantastic work and glad you were able to finish it with such perfection.
Better go and look and see if my Herbert drill is missing ! Great old machines ! I jave some jig plates stashed away with there hardened bushes . For making some sort of side plates !! The reamers drills etc that went with it . A work of art . How things were done before cnc ! Another great process gone ..
Excellent job, paint soon dry out there if touch door up😅, surprised didn't get bar under miller and tweak it soon get a foot by the door. Chamber, s I got a 5C collet chuck, the Chamber on the nose drivers me doolally looking at it. Steve
Exceptional job and spot on for size. Just a thought on your mitutoyo gauge, is the contact tip loose in the shaft, i have had similar problems and that was the cause.
Maybe you explained it and I just didn't catch it. Why not adjust for the spring cut on the first pass on the second side. Thanks for your videos as a hobbyist I really learn a lot from you.
splines are al l ways a pain in the ass but satisfying when done. I do splines often the more you do the easier they get . You will find better ways to do them . I have seen couplers do that tight on one end perfect on the other. Looks like you have a lot of boring mill bars for your HBM aka The Ironworker
Just a newbie question. On that Herbert drill vertical limitation: would a shop made riser block installed at the top/bottom junction of the two 1/2's of column assembly's be practical? Saw something similar on CEE video? Though it looks like you already have plenty of drilling machines😊
It needs to come out rather than up . Easily done but i am not going to do it . The table is only good for mounting fixtures as it does not move . A letterbox may be it's destination as their are issues with the turret drive to the spindles . And i need the big rotary switch out of it for my Herbert capstan lathe ! 👍
Hi Max, I'm busy rebuilding a lathe and need some help with the quick change gearbox selectors. I'm also in the Swan Valley. Where can we catch up to discuss the issue?
I did not take much notice as i was filming & had to make the set up plates . They will be used on other machines . Once i had everything made , the set up time was minimal . 👍
In the first video you said that one tooth was doing the work as usual, when it gets dull can you touch it in your grinder and get the rest of them helping? 😅
I heard someone outside yelling ...You could have bought that shaft from China and got half the workmanship on it ! , Ya Bite me A...ole , hard to find a machinist with quality like Grant showed.
Max, regarding use of a dial indicator at 29:35 on: I can't think of a reason why one dial indicator would swing wildly when another would not, unless: 1. One indicator has 5 times the sensitivity (distance between dial marks) than the other; or 2. There is a dent in the shaft. When you changed indicators you indicated at a different spot outside of the dent. What's the story? In my experience, Mitutoyo make excellent instruments - unless you get a Chinese reject or fake on eBay (all Mitutoyo hand-held instrumets sold in Australia come from a factory in China, since they were forbidden to export from Japan due to being mixed up in an international sanctions-cheating scandal some years ago.
Sorry folks . I can not get through the comments yet , 2nd day of the NBN down . No internet !
And now it's day 4 , no internet .
That was one hell of a project. Relatively simple processes, but getting the accuracy and timing right was really informative.
Thanks Rob . 👍
I was looking around a bit till I realized the annoying bird was on your end. Never heard that call before.
I was going to say that I need to pop over with the 12 gauge to sort out that noisy bird for you. 😜😂😂😉
Lol , one moved in for a couple of days ! 👍
Watch my bloody roof insulation Ian ! 👍
I’ll leave the spline cutting to the professionals…. You..

Thank you very much for taking us with you on this fascinating journey. This was awesome and I learned a tot from your explanations. You are a great teacher.

Thanks Max! Enjoyed. I held my breath at times hoping the cutter would hold up also. Cheers from the States. -Tom
Thanks . The cutter was HSS / Cobalt . Held up perfect in the pre hard 4140 . 👍
Great content Max, thanks for all the explanations. Love your work.
No worries 👍
Nice job on that. I must say, lovely as she is, if my wife ever brought a snack out to the shop for me in the middle of the day, I would definitely suspect something was amiss....Dave
I can attest, having met her once that Heidi is 100% a keeper. Max really did fight above his weight class to find & keep her. 👍👍👍
Thanks Dave . 👍

Thanks Max for another great video on a difficult project. A sudsy cool one is well deserved for your efforts. Cheers
Thanks . 👍
Damn nice fit Max. Love the plan B lathe set up. Well done sir. I am sure I would have had a expletive or thirty had that happened to me. Cheers
Thanks . Your note pad came in handy ! 👍
Excellent video on how to properly machine splines and to keep each spline end in time. Looks like a shaft for a combine head or thresher. I also like your monster shaft setup spanning across several machines to machine the shaft ends.
Thanks . The things you have to do when the big lathe breaks down ! 👍
Excellent job Max, I think the wobbly spacers on the Arbor are done on purpose to show rotation, safety.
The farmer should be happy to get the combine back in action.
Yes , he will be happy ! Will have to have a look at the spacers . 👍

Well Max It all seemed to work out in the end. The angle plates the mill setup and the ding in the door. Nice video and a well done from me. Cheers

Cheers . Lol , There's malarky every where !!! 👍
Great work Max, guite the setup to make it all work.
Thanks for sharing.
No worries 👍
I like your videos Max…you’ve got your shit in one sock man. Keep up the fine work. 🙂

Great build/discussion/problem solving
Thanks Chuck . 👍
I can only imagine what you did. Thinking now what!! as I did this week on a job. Great result Max. Cheers
Thanks 👍
From Nacogdoches, Texas, which is in Eastern Texas. Nice machining Max. Great calendar!!
Thanks 👍
I like the way you index the splines on the other side of the shaft. Simple and effective. That's brilliant.
Thanks Rusty 👍

great work again Max you Bloody Legend!

Cracking job Max, had me in stitches with plan B when the Heron gave up Lol. Great fit up!

G'day Max, top job mate, I'm in awe at how you handled this, great to see the little lathe making a cameo 😂
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Thanks Mate 👍
another job well done max.
see you in the next video.
cheers ben.
Thanks 👍
It’s always a good feeling to finish a job. For me now, projects, since they’re for myself and friends, no money involved except for materials.
I will have a beer to that one ! Cheers 👍
This two-parter was superb fun to watch. Some amount of pre-planning and work-holding issues for you though. Good on ya, Max.
Thanks . The set up plates , i will use in my other machines . 👍

Job well done. Thanks for the video.

Hi spring cut is essential for the part ! Cool good job mate !
Thanks 👍
Really interesting to ride along on this project 👍

Lol , too bloody true !!! 👍
Thanks for sharing Max. You too need a bigger shop.
Yes , but then i would just collect more machines ! 👍
I remember those old Herbert drills, we used to have them in the toolroom, but without the turret. Good old things.
This one used to belong to Herbert . 👍
Max, The Herbert drill press, I’ll have it if it’s free shipping to North East Scotland 😜❤👍🏴

Those cylindrical hard stops on the mill table look very much like gudgeon/wrist pins from a big diesel piston.
They are . Cat C15 and Cummins ! 👍
@@swanvalleymachineshop I have some wrist pins from a Perkins 6:354 that I use as cylindrical squares.
