  • I find this theme really fascinating because it's one of the few in the game that is actually full of anxiety and worry especially compared to the other boss themes in Elden Ring.

Fromsoft have this tendency which I truly admire, and that's confirm certain plot details not by 'telling' us outright, but showing us through their music. This of course doesn't just happen in Elden Ring, it happens in Dark Souls as well. They confirmed to us who the Nameless King was, not through text or dialogue, but music.

  • @Socoolgirl94

Another detail I feel I must add from listening to it repeatedly (since he's my personal favorite boss of Elden Ring)...That string of notes that opens the Phase 2 part of the theme? Same general melody as the Erdtree Avatar's boss theme. He really is going all out, even tapping into the accursed blood he hates more than life itself to stop you from, in his POV, potentially bringing even further ruin to an already broken land. And given some of the endings you can pick...His anxiety isn't entirely unfounded.
Love this Omen so much, wish the world he was in did too. I wanna hug him.

the dichotomy between him and Mohg, twin brothers who've gone down complete opposite paths yet incredibly similar still. one sees his blood as a curse, the other a blessing, yet both rely on it in the end. neither deny their deaths when you defeat them, they accept it immediately. mohg is a bit different of course.
it's incredible how much there is in the game for those two. they knew these characters would become fan favourites.

  • @Graficcha

Something that stands out to me about Morgott is how 'alone' he is, and that to me plays into this anxiety and desperation.
The hill he's dying on is one nobody find important, but it's all he has left. He's not capable of turning against Leyndell because of the love he has for it, and the tragedy to me is how utterly thankless and lonely of a position it is that he ends up in. He's like a child holding onto the picture of a family that fell apart as if that will somehow stave off the reality that it's already over, everyone has already moved on and doesn't care anymore.
I think he's perfectly aware of this, and that he's just resigned to it. Even he probably thinks of himself as expendable, he's not important, the object of his love is what matters. He's forgotten about and abandons the idea that he matters as an individual, and that's just the obvious, natural reality of the world.
It's not just that he has to stand against you, it's that he has no-one, not a single person, on his side. If he buckles, it's over. It's like standing on the edge of a cliff and one step backwards will be the end of it, and there will be no-one to catch him.
That loneliness itself to me feels like it adds to how painful his existence is, and why this last fight feels so raw. It's a helpless loyalty, selfless in the worst way, trying to fulfill a duty to something that doesn't give a shit about whether he does it or not.

@@kixakii436 I didn't get the impression that they ever forged a bond.
I can only assume Hoarah Loux was able to have Opinions about the two Omen kids, and it seems those were at the very least not hostile. Even so, he may not have been able to really do much about the situation given how in-control Marika appears to have been over all these affairs, and once he was banished from the Lands Between he wouldn't have been the sort of person you expect to return, or be worth waiting for.
From the perspective of a child, a father who isn't there to support you and gives no sign of actually caring from the sidelines may as well not be there at all. Tielines around this are murky, but I don't really envision them as having had familial contact the way Radagon and his offspring very likely did get to have with Renala.
From the perspective of Morgott at the time we fight him, it doesn't seem like he had any expectations or hopes regarding his father somehow being an ally to rely on, be it due to his absence with no word on his return (=he can't and likely won't be here), or because there was just no reason to assume he would step in even IF he were able to (=he doesn't care to be here).

Apart from what is already said both in comments and the video, among the demigods Morgott is the sole demigod who decided to stay and defend the Erdtree and the Royal Capital.
Betrayed by his siblings, unloved by his status as an Omen, Morgott the Omen King stands alone in defense of something that never loved him - and defend it he does. In the opening cutscene, he is shown striking down a figure that might be Radahn, named the mightiest demigod of the Shattering.
Perhaps the desperation and fear in the song is because, despite his utmost efforts, you, a lowly tarnished, are proving to be more than his match.
I'm looking forward to Godfrey, First Elden Lord's analysis in the stream next

@@MarcoMeatball there's a sword monument in the graveyard by battlefield in the capital's outskirts that tells of margit (his nickname to hide the horrifying secret that the veiled monarch of leyndel is an accursed omen) piling countless corpses of heroes who tried assaulting the capital.
He's not only skilled in all manner of arms, but he also wields a giant crusher- a weapon used in the war against the giants, with great skill, suggesting he might've fought in such war (the perfumers of antiquity studied omens in an attempt to heal them, before giving up and leaving the only option for noble families is to imprison them in the sewers, or for them to join the army (omen wps desc) so it's plausible).
And such man remembers godefrey well enough to create an illusion in his image (such champion would look up to THE hero of the lands between, and one can see that morgott is skilled in making illusions suggesting it might've been his doing, and why not enlist the help of such legend?).
To have such hero and a shardbearer be in such desperation and a state of fight or flight before a tarnished (well to be fair said tarnished has atleast one more shard than him) is a miracle in of itself, how he sees it, how serious he's about, and what it means to him.

let me tell you, I don't know ANYTHING about music theory, but I always loved listening to soulsborne tracks, they always tell a lot about the bosses' backgrounds and personality.
My interpretation on this one and also the reason why I love Morgott and Mohg is that Morgott never accepted who he really was. He wanted to be different, he wished he wasn't an omen so he could better fit his golden blood, and even now that he is the King of Leyndell, the soundtrack doesn't seem to be filled with "royalness" like Lothric and Lorian's, it's like the song wants to be pure, wants to represent the king of the capital city but there's something preventing that to happen (in this case, the fact that he's an omen)
although, if you listen to Mohg's OST, you can actually understand that he's in true peace. He accepted who he was and saw that as a gift instead of a curse.
Mohg's theme represents the top of a hierarchy, you're really facing the leader of something bigger, the king.
while Morgott's OST tries to hide the curse and never gets the tone it was supposed to have, Mohg's theme accepts that and turn the curse into a blessing, and even the song not being totally "pure", it fits a King.
I don't know if I was able to properly express myself, English is not my main language and I'm really rusty these days haha
keep up the good work, love your videos and interpretations!

Wonderful analysis! Your observations regarding the part at 4:45 is extremely accurate. These are the first notes of the second part of the song and the bridge that leads to this starts at a certain event of the game: when the Omen curse (a curse despised by the powers he wants to protect and serve) overcomes Morgott and it taints the battlefield which is basically an open-field throneroom. A place, he very much respects.
He says: "The thrones... stained by my curse. Such shame I cannot bear. Thy (the player's) part in this shall not be forgiven!" - right after he finishes this line, the sopranos join with the high notes. This was pure timing by the composer and the voiceover team. And I remember the gutting feeling I felt during this as not only Anthony Howell did a spectacular job delivering this line, but the music just had to double confirm that Morgott is in an emotionally vulnerable state. I've never felt this bad for killing a boss before.

The shift halfway captures that sad moment so well. Morgott loved the golden order, the erdteee and leyndell even though he was always treated so poorly based on the curse he was born with. He loved and was committed to the concept of them, it didn't matter what that meant for him. It was truly unconditional. He buries the cursed part of himself so deep that he even suppresses it initially when fighting you, a legitimate threat to everything he's devoted his life to. It's only when you actually wound him, when it's life or death, that he unleashes his curse in one last desperate attempt to hold on to something that was never meant to last. I think the shift in tone: keeping the desperation and the anxiety, but adding this unholiness and desperation as he unleashes his curse is just so fitting

One of the most tragic characters in the game. Curse born and forced to live in the sewers in shame, he still pledged his life to protect the Erdtree and the Golden Order.
He defended the capital from Radahns invasion, despite being family. His shades watch over the lands between to prevent tarnished from seeking the Erdtree.
He has a tremendous amount of faith and loyalty, even if some of it is blind.

I think the whole OST is awesome. It's funny tho how some of the smaller pieces are what I truly remember. Example, being alone in the dark underground with only the sparkle of the ceiling to give you lighting, in the distance you hear the faint sound of a violin playing. Later you find a lone merchant in a safe corner, huddled around the fire playing such a small enchantinf melody. A moment of solace in a tale of crazy. I sat with him for like 10 minutes lol. Oh and I really loved the theme to the giant Deer entity. Remember Radagon is both male and female. Law of Regression!!!

Man I loved that moment too. I'm not sure where this was for you, but for me it was in Siofra. I was pretty underleveled to fight anything properly, and so I kind of just tried to bypass everything, and then hearing the small merchant violin melody drew me forward, and that was where I was like, 'Nah, there's no better spot to stop playing for tonight' lol great memories.

My humbly opinion in fromsoftware themes... Based on my experience with the entire franchise, in Elden ring i found very little amount of themes that hit me and made me remember them after the bossfights, meanwhile titles like bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 made me love theirs themes and they hit me right to the core. By simply words i think they are way more memorable in comparison...

The Golden Order viewed the Omens with disgust since its inception, and because of that they failed to realize Morgott was not the cursed son, but rather the thrice blessed and true champion of the Order. Blessed by Godfrey's warrior's strength, Marika's spiritual strength, and last is the Crucible's beastial strength. The Order can reject Morgott to their dying breath, but in the end his love for the Order and the Erdtree did not go unnoticed and unacknowledged, for the grace of gold that shone in his eyes was evident
his story can be summed in 2 lines:
Born a disgrace, trapped in darkness beneath the earth
Died a king, bathed in Erdtree's golden light

Actually, Morgott's theme sounds a lot more like the general air that Dark Souls 3's boss themes exude. There's lots of drama, lots of tragedy, lots of broken pieces that haven't been picked up. The battle is desperate yet he retains a sense of how strong he is and gives it everything he has.
Dark Souls 3's bosses usually feature those dramatic choirs, the forward momentum of the strings and some violent, deep drums. These bosses are either on the cusp of losing everything or have already lost everything and are now trying to relinquish themselves by defending what little they have left. And Morgott's theme is so much more like that than most of the other themes in Elden Ring.
You should really take a deep dive into Dark Souls 3's boss themes. They have so, so much tragedy and drama and sadness but at the same time sound incredibly valiant, pompous and powerful.

So for a bit of context, of course, spoilers for Elden ring. Morgott is an omen, a race that was once held in high esteem for their amazing strength and power, however, when the golden order came, it treated omens as a curse, Morgott, as an omen, was cast into the sewers of Lindell because of that curse and was forced to train himself, and finally, when everyone else had left, morgott returned to defend a tree and a god who had no love for him. I have amazing respect for Morgott, the omen King

Though Morgott and his brother strayed so far from their father's original path in service to their own twisted ambitions, this fight is an act of duty for him. It isn't him fighting you out of hatred, it is him fighting you because he feels that it is his duty, his family's duty to carry the burden of the Elden Ring. As tarnished as the Golden Order has become, Morgott; the last of his dynasty chose to travel to his father's throne to try and do him proud and sacrifice himself in battle to maintain what little remains of Godfrey's legacy.
He has given you two opportunities up until this point to turn back. To stop your foolish ambitions. The third time he won't stay his hand, neither will he yours.

I have this lore post for you, the post I love to add everywhere out of my love for this character:
Morgott is an EXTREMELY tragic character. The saddest part about Morgott is that he was legitimately blessed. Omen curse is no curse. It's a blessing of the Crucible which was later seen as a curse due to Golden Order. He may as well have been the most holy of all Demigods, but he was punished for it by being left for a time in the sewers and he hated HIMSELF for it. That is until he was released, most likely by the time Giants were still a threat since Godfrey knew him and he was banished after he beat the Giants and other enemies of Erd Tree. He also uses a Giant Crusher. A weapon that fell out of use after War with the Giants. A GREAT way to hide little story details, in Boss's moveset itself.
In his remembrance (japanese version) it's said that he didn't need anyone else's love to love in return. He just loved. He loved others matter what. And there most likely were people that did love him. One of them was Godfrey, but the other may have been his brother Godwyn... who was killed at the Night of the Black Knives. He tried to be a protector, he created Black Cavalry who we see in the trailer and may have been sent by him to hunt down the assassins (who also can be seen protecting the carriage with Malenia's Master's sword that goes to Haligtree), he created Sentry's Torches to protect his other siblings from Godwyn's fate, and yet... they all betrayed him and destroyed everything he loved and even then when he shows up in the throne room and calls his siblings traitors he still seems to have some actual care for them after all of that (calling Godrick by his title, being nostalgic with Malenia and Miquella, respectful for Radahn and mournful for Ranni) and he still felt great shame after staining their thrones meaning that he truly cared for them (outside of Rykard who may have taken more public role in killing Godwyn as part of his deal with Ranni which could have been start of his Blasphemy).
Morgott was a good person that was betrayed by almost everyone around him. By his family that started destroying their life and breaking their world, by the Erdtree which wouldn't accept him due to his "curse" and by Golden Order which indoctrinated him into hating what he was blessed with.
Morgott is probably one of the saddest characters in the game, if not THE saddest. A bitter person who has nothing, but hatred for himself and his family and the only thing he cares about is the thing that made his life miserable in the first place. And the only people that loved him are either dead (Godwyn who given that he befriended Dragons most likely cared little about curse on Morgott) or he never got to meet again after longing to see them again (Godfrey).
And the part with Godfrey is even more sad when you realize that Godfrey we fight before him is most likely created BY Morgott. It's possible that Morgott created that apparition because he wanted the help of his father, he wanted his father to be there and become Elden Lord, evident by him placing his crown on the throne in the trailer.
At the end when we fight him he is legitimately left with nothing, but the crumbling city and his duty which is built on lies of the Greater Will.
Pray for Morgott The Omen King, The Grace-Given. The True King of Leyndell and only worthy successor of Godfrey. A true heir. The only Demigod left that is worthy of being called Golden. Morgott the Golden Omen.
Morgott is probably my new favorite boss From has ever made and with Aldia and Vendrick he is my favorite character From has ever made and that may be partially because of Martin. His character GREATLY makes me think of mix of Tyrion and Stannis and that is the best kind of comparison one could want. Morgott stands above and beyond as an exceptional character in Elden Ring that deserves FAR more praise. The only problem I have with him is that he is too easy if you explore everything before him, but that is another great thing. I don't want his fight to end. I want more of his fight. That is something that is hard to achieve. Make me WANT to fight a boss more. Let's hope he may have an Endgame fight in DLC. As so far we have one in early game, mid game and now only endgame is left. Let's hope for one final showdown with the True King of Leyndell and to me the only worthy Demigod to be Elden Lord.
