  • Cleaning fruits and vegetables is essential for great-tasting store-purchased produce. I typically clean with a water and vinegar mix, but today I am trying out a cleaning device for washing fruits and vegetables.
    Welcome to Simply Mamá Cooks UA-cam Channel! I am a Mom to a blended Korean / Mexican American family that loves to share what I cook in my home. I am still learning and enjoying the process of making home-cooked food.

    Happy New Year, everyone! 🎉 It's my first video for 2023. Let's go! 🙌🏼😃
    Here's additional info and thoughts on the fruit washing capsule. This capsule is described as a machine that uses electrolysis to sanitize and clean fruits and vegetables. I searched info on this method, and here is a brief explanation : "What is water electrolysis technology?
    This technology uses a mild saltwater solution and electrical current to produce two streams of electrolysed water-one negative for cleaning and the other positive for sanitising and disinfecting. You may also hear the technology referred to as “electrolysed water.”
    Visually, the capsule/machine appears to work or, at the very least, agitate the water. The water was also dingy compared to the vinegar one. I think vinegar is trusted because it is proven a great disinfectant.
    It boils down to whether I trust the capsule is doing what it promises. By appearance of the water and taste of the strawberry, it worked in my opinion. Do I know the fruit to be sanitized? No, because I would need to look under a microscope to be 100 percent sure. In conclusion, vinegar is always a safer bet, but I have been so curious to try out this machine, and I finally did that. 😊

    How times have changed, when I was growing up (1950s) it wasn't unusual to find worms in corn, apples, basically any fruit, we just cut off the worm-eaten section and finished eating the fruit. Now if someone finds a bug, they sue the company/grower and then wonder why food costs are so high.

    • @Allie-oop

      Some of the very best sweet corn I have ever eaten had a worm in every ear, we cut it out, cooked it up and it was great. I would gladly deal with the worms if I could get corn like that again, this happened years ago….

      I'm less worried about bugs but more worried about bacteria or germs. We had vegetable gardens and fruit trees growing up, and bugs were natural. I see people sneeze and cough all over the grocery store, so I pretty much wash everything. 😬

    Loved the video demonstration. The only thing I would suggest is the gadget in just a bowl of water to see if it gets dingy by itself. And if the water stays clear, redo the vinegar soaked strawberries with gadget to see if or how dirty the water gets...
    Just to see how clean it actually makes the strawberries....

    Generally, I wash my fruits and vegetables in baking soda solution. I clean my potatoes by rubbing them with a thin paste of baking soda. It works great! It's not water soluble so you never have to worry about absorption by the fruit which is not true for salt or vinegar. Baking soda is a purifier that works by absorption much like activated charcoal. Where as vinegar is an acid that breaks down the fiber structure of the fruit itself and can be absorbed. 🤓 ♥

      I think washing in a water / vinegar solution disenfects. The baking powder is a great way to clean but does not sanitize as well. I will definitely be using this for scrubbing potatoes. That is such a great idea. Thank you! 👍🏼

    • @girlcheck
      @girlcheck Рік тому +5

      @ Baking "soda". Not baking powder. Bicarbonate of soda. Not the same. Vinegar doesn't technically disinfect but more so its an acid that breaks down protein structures that make them readily wash away. This is why it works well as a degreaser. I love your show! 😍 Love you! I'm all about what's "comfortable for your home". I appreciate you so much in all the things you do and your great efforts for your family and your kitchen. Best to you in the New Year!

    • @girlcheck
      @girlcheck Рік тому +1

      @@iMichellet7 depending upon how much fruit or vegetables you're washing, about a tablespoon to a medium sized bowl of fruits or vegetables with water and swirl it around occasionally. I think 30 minutes is plenty. 15 minutes will do the job. Be sure to give a rinse after soak. It works really well for tomatoes to get that waxy greasy coating off.

      En general, los purificadores de iones no deberían enturbiar el agua por sí solos, ya que su función principal es emitir iones negativos que interactúan con partículas en el aire y los alimentos. Sin embargo, algunos purificadores de iones pueden incluir placas de metal que se utilizan para generar los iones negativos y pueden oxidarse con el tiempo, lo que puede afectar la apariencia del agua.
      Además, es posible que el agua que se utiliza en el purificador de iones contenga impurezas o partículas que puedan enturbiar el agua después del proceso de ionización. Es importante utilizar agua limpia y de buena calidad para asegurar que el proceso de ionización funcione correctamente y no afecte la apariencia del agua.
      En general, si el agua se vuelve turbia después de utilizar un purificador de iones, es recomendable investigar las causas y asegurarse de utilizar agua limpia y de buena calidad. Si la turbidez persiste, es posible que haya otros problemas que deban ser abordados y se recomienda contactar al fabricante del purificador para obtener más información y soporte técnico.

    Try the machine in a plain bowl of water to see if the water clouds up. If it’s cloudy, then you know it’s not all dirt. If it’s clear, then you know it works really well. I just use the vinegar method too. That’s how I clean/disinfect my house. (Vinegar, baking soda, or hydrogen peroxide because I can’t use chemicals or scented products…and it’s reliable and cheaper.)

I thought maybe there was a Filter inside that you open & See all the Debris or u were gonna inspect the bottom of both bowls (after taking out fruit) 4 a Comparison? Or maybe gently take out as much water as possible & run a clean, white paper towel along the bottom of both bowels & see which had more debris? One Bowl Clear & the other Bowl Cloudy leaves me kinda 🤷‍♀

    I always look at these devices in terms of my own Zombie Apocalypse Test, i.e., how will it work when the grid is down. Needs electricity? Won't work when zombies overwhelm the electrical workers. Vinegar? Great for those who have holed up in Costco. Seriously, Epicurious did a scientific test a while back and the electrolyte way is maybe as effective as clean tap water, but not more. Just another gadget. But I love this type of review and hope you do more because I'd like to see what works and what doesn't.

    Hi Angelica! Happy New Year! 😊 I've tried some of your recipes and we love the flavors. I'm so excited I found your channel recently. I even purchased your book to show my support!!! I think it's so nice of you to recommend gadgets and such. I was wondering about washing produce this way. How would we know if this really works. So I was checking online to see if I could find a website that could recommend this tool. I couldn't find anything, but the FDA website popped up so I clicked on it to see what they said. The FDA recommends that we wash our hands with soap and water before we touch the produce and then to simply clean everything with clean, clear water from the tap. I don't know if that's because of flouride or other substances added to water, but they even recommended that we not use vinegar. I don't know why that is, but Healthline also recommended the same thing, but they were following the FDA recommendations as well. They said that using other ways to clean produce might even be harmful. I thought you'd like to know that! 😊💕

    I’ve always done the white vinegar on berries because it’s supposed to make them last longer in the fridge. What was your experience with the gadget?

    I am so glad you did this test, I've been thinking about this for a while. Wonder what the price is. What other veggies do you use with the vinegar 🤔

    I would say the old school method works however because its yellowish and or brownish water it tells me that the dirt came off the strawberries and to be honest the strawberries looked so much brighter after it was done. I THINK IT WORKS!!!

    Well it also could have something coming out of that machine to make the water cloudy.

    I like the review. Me personally I prefer the vinegar/water. Especially since the machine needs electricity to charge.

    Hi I'm curious did you notice a difference in taste from the two cleaning options of the strawberry?

    Thanks for the info! I think a weekly serials of gadgets would be a cool idea. I'd definitely watch it.

    That was interesting. I personally wouldn't buy it. In my mind, baking soda and water mixture does the job well enough.
    Weekly or monthly gadget videos sounds like a great series. I'm a gadget person and would like to see what you come up with. Maybe after watching you show us some, I'll actually buy instead of window/screen shop.

    The videos showing the bugs coming out of the strawberries was proven to be fake and clickbait.

    Vinegar mixed with fresh tap water is best, and makes fruit last way longer.

    Doesn't the vinegar alter the taste of your fruits and vegetables?

    • @Lucinda_Jackson
      @Lucinda_Jackson Рік тому +2

      No, it doesn't. If that's a concern for you, you could rinse them in clear water, but I've never had them taste of vinegar if using the 3:1 ratio.

    Look like a ionic device...sometimes it creates water color. I use peroxide...bicarbonate soda...vinegar on various fruits vegetables and meats. Thx4sharing ⚜️✌️
