My shower would not heat up. It had me scratching my head since the bathroom was remodeled some time in the 90's so I didn't believe it had an anti-scald mixing valve. After watching this video I realized that the pressure balance feature of the cartridge might be the cause. Sure enough, when I removed the cartridge I found that the hot passage was blocked. A quick trip to Home Depot for a new cartridge and I am back in business with steamy hot showers. Thanks for all the detailed pictures and narrative. It was very helpful.

Thank you for the video. 46-4042 for Price Pfister is the Single Lever Cartridge (all-in-one unit) made by Kissler & Co. and 974-042 ox8 is the Universal sold at Lowes and HD.

This little ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxVoi3B4CB6Oygq1-vo4OTL1M_M5JkrXif tub works perfect in our 6 x 6 shower and is easy to get in and out. Also easy to drain.

Late to the party but need to change both a bath faucet and shower valve. Mine are Pfister also but look different once the cover is removed. You do a great job of describing and using the pointer while explaining what you are doing. My bath faucet looked exactly as yours when I removed the cover. Ends up that on mine it was a big flat washer that had completely rusted and just fell apart. People at both Home Depot and Lowes said there was not supposed to be anything there. They didn't have anything matching in the stores so I could not disagree with them. Will tackle the shower valve if this one works correctly. All of your videos were very helpful. Thanks

Thanks for making this video. I have this same fixture and was having a heck of a time identifying the brand. I did call Price Pfister and spoke with someone I could barely understand. After describing the fixture they said they'd send something in 7-10 days. When I asked what they were going to send the person described only a single piece.
I don't think the person knew or cared about the product so instead I went to my local Home Depot and got a Pfister pressure balancing cartridge (S74-291) and a valve stem assembly (971-250). Ten days is far too long to wait and I doubt I would have received the correct product.

Thanks so much for your attention to detail. I must've put this thing together 3 or four times, even trying a combo of new and old parts (swapping out o-rings because new one looked thinner and felt more "brittle"). I also tried Plumber's Grease. Your little tip about cleaning and drying the area where the o-ring will make contact is what finally did the trick. Also, I tightened the screws starting with the bottom two first to make sure it was well seated as that is where it kept leaking.

Thanks for the video. This is the only tutorial that I could find that had my shower set up. For those who may need the actual part numbers for the two parts here they are: Valve Stem Assembly (971-250) - front part. Balancing Cartridge (974-291) - Back part.

Valve Stem Assymbly (971-250) is the front part. Balancing Cartridge (S74-291) is the back part. You also can just buy the newer part (974-042) which is one single assembly that replaces the two. I decided to go with the newer part as I had to replace the other ones twice in few years.

Great video. I had already disassembled mine to diagnose the problem and had determined it was a Price-Pfister. When you got the cover off I could tell right away that you had the exact same model. Your disassembly with post mordem examination of the defective valve was also very informative. Thank you so much.

THANK YOU for this video! I was also stumped with no manufacturer on the faucet and finally searched "plastic shower cartridge" and found this video. I bought the part 974042 from a big box store since I am not the original owner, and changed the 17 year old cartridge out tonight! My only issue is that there is a gap between the collar and the faucet. I think maybe when I was trying to remove it the value was pushed too far forward in the wall. hopefully nothing a little caulk can't fix. Thanks so much for the detailed video, it was a lifesaver today.

Thank you for posting AND providing the Price Pfister name. I'm in Orange County as well and we have had 2 pin hole leaks in the kitchen already. I have the same shower but luckily it wasn't corroded like yours. I'm just not getting enough hot water all of a sudden. I'm looking for ways to adjust for more got water. Will continue on the search with other videos. But this has helped me with a few things.

I was looking into how to remove the (as Pfister calls them) "pressure balancing cartridge" (the gray/grey part in your video). I replaced two of them (shower and tub, since they are separate). I was able to dislodge a dark piece, that appeared to be part of a gasket, from one of the cartridges and could not remove additional pieces that I saw, hence why I purchased new ones! When I removed them and tried to blow air through the openings both showed air flow restriction. New parts have no air flow restriction in any of the openings. I will mention your channel when I post my video. Thank you.

Great video! Thank you so much my good sir. I called a plumber cause my faucet had a small leak that would leak one drop every ten seconds or so. He walked in my bathroom looked at it without touching nothing, told me it would be $1200 to fix and that he would need to cut open the drywall in my room thats directly behind the shower in order to repair the leak. I told him I'd get another quote before I decide he then told me "cool, how do you wanna pay me the $100 fee for coming out and diagnosed it" long story short the bastard got me for my $100 but that's OK you my friend have saved me the $1200 blow my pocket was gonna take from that greedy punk. The Pfister shower valve cartridge replacement part is only $35 at Lowe's or you can get it from Amazon for $23. I'm gonna record myself fixing it, time myself then send it to that filthy plumber when I'm done! 🤗 Thank you!!!

Very informative video. I have the same model in my home and had to replace it in 2003. Started to leak recently. Fortunately for me, I had kept the old one and the packet it came in. That contained the part numbers I needed. I did learn from this video that there is a llifetime guarantee so I'm contacting Pfister about that. It is a good day when you learn something new. Thanks for creating this video. Well worth my time watching it.

Very good detailed pictorial! Alot better than the majority of actual videos posted on the same subject. I'm glad to know after watching your posting that Price Pfister actually has such a good warranty. I've always avoided buying their products after having leaking problems in the past and have mainly focused on using Delta or American Standard products because they seem to hold up better than their less expensive counterparts. The new cartridges are one piece and as low as $22.00 for OEM on Amazon. Just replaced mine yesterday after bringing back the "recommended" valve part #1 which didn't fix the problem because part #2, the black piece with 2 holes was the problem. Just buy the one piece. It's cheaper overall and fit's perfectly.

I've been a little surprised at the number of people interested in this subject. As far as pipes doing a "water hammer," I would suggest checking the anti-hammer tank. It's usually located close to the water heater. In older houses lacking the tank there should be a closed stand pipe that performs the same function. Be advised...I am not a plumber and have never even played one on TV. I just had the advantage of growing up poor...one learns to fix stuff or to do without.

Thanks for all of the great information! I actually just got off the phone with Kathleen at Price Pfister - she not only id-ed the part but will send me a new replacement - free. They have a great warranty there - knowing that I will buy Price Pfister parts from now on (I thought customer service was dead nowadays - but Kathleen proved that wrong).
Again - thanks for posting this great & informative video! You saved me a bundle of cash! and frustration.
PS - are you going to do any more of these videos? They are great.

Thanks for explaining this so thoroughly. I''m sure we just saved ourselves at least $150+ on a plumbler.
