  • Hey there, I'm Joe, and in the Summer of 2024, my wife Helen and I travelled to Southern California. In today's video, I'm going to be exploring Ocean Beach and Point Loma. Let's go!
I started the day doing something I don't usually do, which is by having breakfast. I went to Werewolf on Fourth Avenue in the Gaslamp district, which already had some absolute tunes pumping. I'm extremely happy to say that I ate one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten: Chilaquiles Roja with pork belly. I still think about this meal.
After that, I went over to fifth avenue to buy Helen a San Diego hoodie I saw the night before, before heading off to Ocean Beach & Point Loma.
When I arrived, the sun hadn't shown itself through the morning fog yet, but I took the opportunity to look around the town at some surf shops, gyms, breakfast haunts, and the like.
This was the first time on this trip I have seen people surfing, and although the sun wasn't out, the California vibes were hitting hard.
This place is calmer, safer, and a better place for families than the "city" of San Diego is, and I legitimately wouldn't mind spending a month here one summer in the near-future. Stay tuned, and subscribe to my channel to follow that journey.
I then saw the SD Baywatch crew setting up for the day along the Sunset Cliffs. The sea was really messy, and the sky wasn't cooperative, but I still really liked being beside the ocean, over the cliffs. it reminded me of the place in the UK where I proposed to Helen, a little surfy town in Cornwall.
I busted the drone out and wasted its battery instead of waiting for the sunshine to come out later... Saw some wildlife, some nice seaview homes, and some excellent landscaping and gardening.
I then explore a grocery store called Jensen, and bought something called 'Birch Beer'.
One I made my way back down Hill Street, the sun decided to come out. It does such a disservice to these beach towns to show them in the grey. The colours really pop when the sun comes out, and gives them an entirely different life. The sunset cliffs were stunning, and there was a lot of stuff to see on the way back, such as death-defying stunts, ocean spray, and people enjoying the sunshine.
Heading back the way I came, I saw some more beautiful seaview homes, and some of the sights we saw earlier, now in colour. I stopped at another market to buy another drink. This time, Arizona Iced Tea.
Once I got back to Ocean Beach, I noticed a farmer's market setting up, but it wasn't ready yet. I continued walking back towards the beach, watching the various stalls set up.
It would be so cool to spend a month in a beachside cabin in Ocean Beach or Point Loma. I did some peoplewatching, and saw a girl dressed up as an Orca do a TikTok dance.
Once I came back, the farmer's market was fully underway.
I saw a donut filled with Nutella with a melted cookie on top of it. Unfortunately, this has gluten in it, otherwise I'd be willing to lose a foot for it.
After walking up and down the farmers market 3 times, I decided on something I hadn't tried before: Tamales. The lady and her daughter were so nice, and helped me decide what to get (pork loin with roasted green chillies) and I just must say, this did not disappoint whatsoever. Unfortunately, it wasn't a lot of food, which I knew beforehand, so I decided to top up at Chicken Over Rice, which was way better than the basic name might have you believe.
Helen then sent me a message that she was done for the day, and I made my way back to the bus stop, and jumped on in the space of only a few minutes. After about 45 minutes, I was back at the hotel with 1% battery left, and after a few minutes of charging and rinsing off my flipflop feet, Helen and I made our way from the hotel down to the waterfront, back to Miguel's to watch the sunset while she ate fiah tacos, rice and beans, and tortilla chips. On the walk home, we saw some sailboats drifting in the night.
Stay tuned for more SoCal Vlogs! Lots more to see here.
