UPDATE: Olympic boxing champion Andy Cruz is able to escape Cuba
Boxer Andy Cruz, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics champion, was able to leave Cuban this weekend (November 4-6, 2022) and is now in the Dominican Republic, where he reunited with his partner.
The news was reported by sports journalist Francys Romero, who added the boxer will now pursue a professional career.
Last June, the 26-year-old resident of Matanzas was surprised by Cuban authorities as he was trying to leave the country along with baseball prospect Cesar Yanquiel Hernandez. As a consequence, both athletes spent several days in prison.
The next month, after the boxer put in a request to resign from the Cuban team, authorities on the island informed him he had been banned from Cuban sports.
