to put the fiji performance into perspective their rugby union has zero money, a handful of these players are on junior contracts in nz but the majority are playing domestic club rugby on dirt pitches in fiji for less than £80 per month in comparison to the northern hemisphere with massive capital investment, academies and professional contracts, etc. as a rugby fan and purist there is simply nothing better in the world than to see these boys running from deep with power and swerves and offloads while whooping for joy as they score .... just imagine the force they could become on the international scene, along with their polynesian brothers from samoa and tonga, if world rugby committed to a 10 year plan (as they did for argentina) to develop their coaching, performance analysis and talent identification with an equitable share of funding and did not allow the southern and northern hemisphere countries to plunder them for their own international teams .... the island teams would wreak havoc !

    Well done Fiji!
Whether men or U20, 7s or 15s, Fiji is doing it with mostly local talent. Samoa, when will we acknowledge that we don’t know rugby? The longer we pretend we are “the best” the longer it’ll take us to fix our problems.
Blame the PM all you want but, INDIVIDUALLY, most players from Samoa are light years behind the rest of the world regarding rugby IQ. Just look at what Georgia and Fiji are doing against bigger nations

Fiji has a much bigger population than Samoa though. Fiji has almost 1 million people, Samoa has 200,000

I think it mental really and Pacific are well known for their laid back mentality,if fiji can do it SAMOA can its just mental really

Mark Whippy But if you take into consideration the number of Samoans that lives overseas, and there’s a lot of them. Easy access to world class facilities, training programs, diet and all those stuff. Most of them make themselves available for their nation. They haven’t been able to live up to their full potential. Where as for Fiji with little resources are punching above their weight. That is the result of changes being made in the last couple of years by the Fiji Rugby Union. With good governance, hard work and passion Fiji is reaping the rewards. So appreciate the compliments. Fiji are doing well!

Mark Whippy I saw the population numbers too but you gotta take into consideration that about half of the million people of Fiji are Indians.
So yes, ~500,000 of Fiji is still more than the 200,000 of Samoa. However, when you watch how poorly individual players from Samoa play you’re left scratching your head. There is no excuse in the poor display of basic passing, disorganized defensive lines, ill-discipline, lack of fitness, etc. This at both the senior and u20 level.
We are barely able to compete with countries ranked 11-15 with Kiwi-Samoan help. Imagine the slaughter we’d get if we used only local Samoan talent?! Yikes!

Alisi Maria that’s exactly my point. It is mental. Ask any Samoan who’s the best pacific island team. They’d all say Samoa is. Then they’d talk about the 1991 Manu Samoa 15s squad or the 2009 7s squad. No one wants to acknowledge that the 1991 team was full of kiwis. And the 2009 team was a fluke. Having a pesamino (speed), faosiliva/treviranus (speed and power), and mai/lolo lui (brains) on one team is once in a generation occurrence.
But the point is, fundamentally, a lot of Samoan lack the basics of rugby IQ. They’ll never attain it if they think they already got it.
We call that “ova le fia poko”

People trying to link this to being against world rugby championship. Nonsense I'm irish and against it simply because i love the six nations. People trying to kick scotland when they are down should take a good look at themselves.

This is why Scotland voted against the World Rugby Nations Championship concept. They knew that if developing nations like Fiji and Georgia get more regular intenational games and get more funding and develop their junior programmes, that they would be at risk of being relagated. Lets hope Fiji get into The Rugby Championship (TRC) tournament. Make it happen World Rugby like you did to help Argentina get into TRC. You owe them that.

Was the World Rugby Nations concept for the U 20s?

Most tier 2 countries voted against the Nations league buddy. It would have barely been helpful for tier 2 at all.

@@Stevenbfg Which tier 2 nations voted against it and why would they vote against something that would be beneficial towards them?

@Scottish Slav 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I'm sure those nations appreciate what Scotland have done and what they are doing. Unfortunately these nations needs to play on a regular basis at international level to improve. Look how Argentina have improved by being included in Super Rugby and The Rugby Championship. The WR Nations Championship would have been a game changer for international rugby and these nations would have benefitted from playing at top level against the best nations in the world. Anyway, that is all water under the bridge. Good luck to Scotland in the RWC.
