  • Frames are not finished until after you have added foundation. In this video, Dr. Ellis demonstrates how to install different types of foundation in a frame.

You are showing the "ideal" way of installing beeswax foundation which can be intimidating as well as more expensive for the beginner for the extra tools, jigs etc. It is also very time consuming if you have more than a few frames to install. I have literally installed thousands of sheets of wax foundation and can do it in less than a minute without all of the items you have shown. The only time I use extra support is for frames that are installed in the honey super, if I am going to use an extractor. I have also used hundreds of starter strips (which the bees prefer) and I use fishing line for support (which does not require the eyelets). As with anything, there are pros and cons for all types of foundation. It is essential that plastic foundation have a layer of wax to attract the bees and to avoid wonky comb or bridge comb.

Foundation carries chemicals from previous beekeepers and efb and afb. Hot glue lollypop sticks onto top of frame or thin strip of wood . Then install bamboo barbeque skewers in the vertical position two per frame for British national frames or three or more for other frames again hot glue gun will do the job.

I have a concern over using plastic which is exposed to heat in the hive. My daughter’s responsibility at her job is in material data. The government required her company to send her to a seminar on plastics. She told me some horrible things that has snowballed beyond control because plastic is in everything. All types of plastic is bad but some are worse than others. Plastics create so many health risks to people and to animals. They have science to back this up. Think about the inside of your car’s windshield. Notice how it gets this foggy film that’s a pain washing it off? That’s from the sun’s heat baking the plastic. It releases this oily fine substance. So now we put plastic in the hives, in the sun and exposing our bees and a food source to plastic! I’m very concerned.

Thank you for your comment! There has been no research showing negative consequences of plastic frames in honey.
