Burnishing the bole.

Bole is a fine-grain clay and comes in red oxide, yellow ochre and black. You lay it down in multiple layers and let it dry, then burnish with a smooth stone (this is an agate stone burnisher) to bring up a high shine. This creates the surface that will make the gold look very shiny. You can also tool or stamp it to create a glittering effect in patterns.
