My husband and I are in our 40s. We moved from a big city in Texas to the Wilmington area. Cost of living isn't vastly different in my opinon. We kind of leveled out and still pay around what we used to in our day to day/ month to month spending. The home prices are just as expensive here as they were in the big city we came from. Taxes and other living expenses aren't so different that we noticed saving a ton here now that we live here. One thing that was jarring to me is how much slower and relaxed life is here. That isn't a bad thing. We came from highspeeds on the road ways and fast paced work environments to a very chill slow day to day life. The surrounding areas actually slow down and go to bed by 8pm. It's weird to be out at 9pm and not beable to find much open by that time. We have to be sure to pick up dinner semi early before resturants close. I personally like that about living out here. You can go in your backyard and actually see stars. Businesses aren't open to blind out the night sky. On a negative though this area is a job desert. It's hard to find a good paying job that isn't remote. You'll be pulling in around the 60K range and MIGHT beable to pull in 70-80K with both you and your partner working. I see it more consistant in the 60 to 70k though. What's bad about that is it makes for local income being less than the incomes of people transplanting here. So you find that affordability is really for those who don't actually depend on a local job to be here.
Amazing comment! Thank you so much for your feedback and I’m glad that you love it here. It definitely is a change from other areas of the US but in a lot of ways, a good change. Costs are certainly comparable to a lot of areas and it sounds like it’s comparable to where your from in Texas - but I know a lot of my clients (including myself) moving from northern states that are saving a lot of money. Eitherway, we love living here! Thanks so much for your comment and support and please let me know if I can ever help with anything 🙏🏻
It's a good video. I'm a native Columbus County resident that lives about 30 miles west of Wilmington. One reason that our homes don't have basements is because the soil has a lot of clay in it. I like Wilmington but one of the bad things about that city is they don't have a lot of good paying jobs when compared to the Raleigh area. I lived up there for 4 years while I was working and going to college. Also I noticed that houses and apartments in Wilmington are getting more expensive like in the Raleigh area. I feel bad for the people in New Hanover county that don't have good paying jobs or don't own land. Many of them will never become homeowners. I am thankful that my family owns 9 acres of land in rural Columbus County. It's nice and quiet out here. I don't have to worry about bad neighbors or homeowner associations telling me when I can or can't do with the property. I plan to build a house on the property within 4 to 5 years from now.
Highway 17 is getting a lot more crowded. You actually have bumper-to-bumper traffic at some of the day. Where as a year ago if I saw five cars on the highway at the same time, it was a lot.
It’s irritating because instead of enjoying our culture they just come in and try changing our way of life in a not so nice ways.. I was always taught when visiting or moving to a didn’t way of life it’s to embrace it, learn, and enjoy our southern charm.. we love to say how are you, good morning, small talk while waiting in line. Now people act like your invisible 🫥, omgoodness actually talking or a stranger they give you a look like your crazy… yes we like to enjoy life and not allow work to rule our life.. I’m downtown and love it but newbie’s moving have no respect for our southern charm… 🙇♂️🤦♀️
I 1000% agree with you. That’s why in most of my videos, I tell my viewers to leave their northern ways in the north😆 I’m with you and I hope my videos help to change the mindset around relocation
My dad used to live right outside of Wilmington in Currie and says he’s glad he’s moved because it’s so different now. I live in East Tennessee and all these transplants from California and New York are changing our sweet culture here. Everyone is hateful here now and they close the door in your face instead of holding it open. It really pisses me off so bad how the southern hospitality is slowly disappearing 😔
As a recent new resident things sort of balanced themselves out. If you’re moving from a northern State You will like the fact that your real estate taxes like mine went from 12,000 to 5000. My auto insurance went from 6000 to 1900.Eating out is way way so much affordable that you will find yourself eating out a lot more. sales tax on a brand new car is only in the 3% range. Unlike 7 to 8 in the northern states. I gained 17 pounds in my first year moving down here you are absolutely correct. Food and drinks are so much cheaper. It’s not even worth cooking at home.
Moved here 22 years ago from CT. Taxes are about a third what I was paying. Locals don't have a problem with people coming here - that's ridiculous. They don't care. Too into yourself. It's a very popular city that is growing fast because it has so much to offer. People don't come here to get a job, they come because of great food, great beaches, great neighborhoods and usually great weather.
Appreciate your comment and thank you for watching! Regarding the locals - I’m not too into myself, go into any youtube videos comments and see what the locals say. They love to tell people not to move here. In any case, I agree about not moving here because of a job - wilmington has so much to offer and mostly everybody loves it here! 👍🏼 let me know if I can ever help with anything 🙂
On your comments on locals while a lot of that is true it actually runs deeper than that . At its heart is the Northern attitude that people bring here with them when they move to the South some are completely oblivious to how they stick out and think that it’s all okay because in general most Southerners will not tell you how they feel about you being here, but they sure do amongst themselves. I’ve have and have had friends from the North but they are the kind you spoke of who do adapt to the Southern life and a simulate.
Thank you for your comment! Like I said, I don’t want people moving here refusing to adapt either - I know how annoying it can be. When I lived in the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate NY, we got people from NYC or NJ all the time. They brought their poor driving habits. They’re fast paced lifestyle and politics with them and we hated it. Where I’m from in NY is actually a lot like Wilmington, but I can definitely resonate with this 🙏🏻
The influx of people that moved into Wilmington over the last 10+ years has pretty much ruined the chill college beach town I once knew. Want to find a parking spot at the beach? Better be there at 6 am. Want to not be stuck in traffic? Better not drive until 8pm. Want to get good service like I used to be able to? Forget it you’re just a number now unless you are dealing with a local. However I don’t let that bother me this is still my city and you are correct we don’t like the implants unless they are chill like us. It’s just crazy how some people move here and think they own the city now. Crazy drivers hurrying to get no where causing accidents every day! Body shops backed up for months what does that tell you? Thinking of moving here and finding a job? Better think twice. Bottom line don’t move here we are full for real and all the tourists need to stay away too 😂
Hey! I love Syracuse! I’m from Canandaigua lake myself. Schools were a huge factor for us coming from NY which was ranked top in the nation. We have pretty good schools here but they’re not NY caliber. If you’d like, because I’m limited in what I can say, I can send you a few resources to research the schools. Shoot me a text, 910-541-4088 💪🏼
Yeah there is a drug problem everywhere right now.. but unfortunately those stats don’t come up on the public sites I use, so I can’t spew off that info otherwise my license could get taken away. I have definitely heard it is an issue though.
Yes! I am glad you touched on this. I was a Chaplain in Wilmington, NC during my residency. The drug problem was horrendous! Worked at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. I decided I did not want to relocate there and not continue to stay once my Chaplaincy Residency was completed.
The locals recognize the cultural changes transplants can bring with them. I imagine the time will come when that area will be overwhelmed with transplants. As corporations move in, brace for the wave. Atlantas explosive growth is a great example. Housing cost and just about everything else is going to increase at a steady clip.

I can’t argue with anything you’re saying Lorenzo! All good stuff, thank you for your perspective! The main draw here obviously is the coast

Most of us are relocating away from every thing that we know to escape liberal tyranny. I’d fit in culturally but $5/hour to park my car?
Amen brother. They come down here and try to change it to the very same environment they got away from

One time tax doesn't equal one a year
You’re right, I misspoke - the vehicle tax is a tax you pay once a year. Thanks for the correction
