Opportunities to try new life experiences!
A huge THANK YOU to Dream League DXB team for creating such opportunities & experiences; their team teach the skills of roller skating, skiing & rock climbing to people with disabilities, so that they can then enjoy the sport with inclusion alongside the community!
Their team are trained & experienced with adaptive sports, they have adaptive equipment to make it possible & they have the skills, knowledge, patience, empathy & kindness to find a way for each individual.
When they suggested roller skating for Rio, as parent’s we initially made the huge mistake of not presuming competence, only thinking of the reasons of why it would not be feasible (which was a long list); but we agreed to give it a go, as we always do want to give Rio every opportunity in life that we possibly can, safely.
As it is summer, the Dream League use an indoor venue at @goskateuae
We had explained to Rio before hand what he was invited to, what would happen & to make sure he agreed. He was excited that Tia, his sister, would be doing it too!
The team were incredibly kind & knew exactly what to do when we first met, which made us comfortable.
The initial stage was our expectation - Rio was not happy, in fact he screamed - he was stressed by the sensory of everything - new place, new equipment, not really grasping what was expected; he really couldn’t cope with socks, the shoes, the pads ... but he was delighted by the helmet though - helmet means racing!
The team instinctively & patiently knew what to do, they adapted everything to make Rio comfortable. Rio calmed & was ready to give it a go.
It was a step by step process, with adaptive equipment, physical effort from their team, finding the right way for Rio & he got there! He proved us wrong & he LOVED it, he had the biggest smile!
Best of all was doing a new activity alongside his sister & knowing one day soon he will be able to do a new sport alongside others in the community with inclusion, having fun together!
