  • LAHAKAI SAILING // ⛵️S1 Ep25 // Join us in this exciting episode where we address your burning questions about the modifications we made in our sailboat restoration project. We've made countless changes to the design over the last year and have been working hard to make sure everything is safe and sound. In this episode, we consult with a Marine Engineer here in Brazil who gives us valuable feedback on the work we've done and helps us identify any potential weight distribution issues that could cause our boat to capsize. Don't miss out on this informative episode as we walk you through the changes we've made and learn how to make them even better!

    What do you think?? We made so many changes on our boat that some of you were questioning the safety. So we called an expert to let us know if our boat is going to cut it! We learned a lot when Gustavo visited and already started working on some changes on our boat. And we are still considering to make some more modifications before we call the construction a day.
    You might have noticed the davits in this video since we shot it before we removed them. We did discuss the balance issue that some of you had but sine we ripped them out we didn't include them in the video. But let us know if you want to hear more about that.
    Do you have any other questions that we might have missed??? How do you feel now that Gustavo weighed in?

      A very high IQ move, I only had one boat surveyed that I was donating to sea scouts in Houston. I am guessing the electric motor & batteries will weigh less than the original diesel & associated fuel. I do think you should find a dedicated place for the generator for when the sun does not shine. I sound proofed our horse trailer generator, plenty of information on line about sound proofing.

      Weight-wise have you weighed-up (ha) the balance of water-maker vs water tankage - large tanks that could serve as buoyancy aids when empty and relying on the water-maker for passages etc.

    Want to make sure that the ballast will not corrode? drill 2 small holes, one on each end, pump nitrogen into it, nitrogen is heavier than air, and it will fill up the space and all the air (O2) will leak out and over. without O2, no corrosion will take place. I use the same thing when I used to store barrels of corn, rice, and whole wheat in 50 gallon drums, they would last, predictably for 20 years or more.....

    The Marine Engineer was mentioning weight and balance . You've added more weight with the bow , stern extensions and filling the keel . He noted that the added weight could raise the waterline ( boat sits deeper in the water ) . keeping track of weigh being added as you build on the rest of the project would be good idea . Good video bringing in a expert .

    Hello, it was a great idea for you to call an engineer for the vessel inspection but I would like to make a note about the welding. I do welding inspection and non-destructive testing and it seems to me that the welding that the welding carried out on the hull plates has several "welding procedure deviations" , only the fact that the welder has left an excess amount of material (weld material) is already a sign that the welder does not have much experience. Excess weld material generates stress on the welded areas and over time this stress can lead to cracks. If you remove excess material from the outside, you must also remove the excess from the inside to equalize the stresses then NDT the entire weld. I advise you to do a NDT (Non Destructive Test) on the hull called dye penetrant inspection. With this inspection you will be able to verify several problems that may have been generated by the welder such as cracks, porosity and others. The hull of the boat is one of the most important part on the vessel, if you leave any welding problem that goes through the hull it can sink the vessel. The welding process is not as simple as it seems. In order to weld, a procedure must be developed that involves specifying the material to be welded, the type of electrode to be used for that material and a procedure that establishes the welding process and the adjustment of the welding machine and other details. I hope you did it correctly. At the very least I advise you to look out for an experienced welding inspector for the weld check. Engineers do not have the technical knowledge to evaluate welding unless he is qualified as a welding inspector by ABENDE. Brazilian Association of Non-Destructive Testing or have a degree in the subject. I wish you good luck and hope your project can be finished soon.

      Hello! Thanks very much for your advice! It is very true what you say and we've been concerned about the welds since we left our last location. Did you see our last episode? We are doing lots of different topics simultaneously so some things might appear slightly out of order to group together each subject. We hired an experienced welder that works as a manager of the welding department in the company next door and he is overseeing the repairs. They repair large boats like ferry boats. We sanded down all the welds as you can see in the video and then fixed anything that appeared to have issues. We will do a final inspection again prior to moving forward. We completely agree with you, this is the most important step! Ever other one depends on this being right. Cheers!!

      The space between the ribs and the hull plating worries me. Heavy seas will flex the plating and may cause metal fatigue. The welding looks erratic and poorly applied. Giovanni is absolutely correct in advising you to have the welding checked by an expert. I fear that the ribs and longitudinal structure are not strong enough. Sorry to say this but I would not go to sea in this vessel as it stands.

    • @lahakai
      @lahakai  Рік тому +1

      The original frames carried this boat from France to Brazil and after 25 years there were no distortions or issues with them other than rust. We then replaced all of the longitudinal frames below the waterline for thicker angle steel bars knowing that the boat will be more active. Gustavo visited us a couple times and we spoke a lot so we couldn't catch somethings on camera without making the episode too long. But he said that the framing was really well reenforced and that he had no concerns about them.

    Factor in a big anchor winch and heavy chain with plenty of length should help the balance....

    • @lahakai
      @lahakai  Рік тому

      Ah yes, this is very true. One thing he said off camera was that part of weight distribution is when you are done and the boat is in the water, moving things around the boat is also part of balancing it. So we will add the anchor and chain as you said. We have a very small boat so say you have a heavy tool box, we'd consider the best place to store that, perhaps in the stern to balance the anchor. But in bigger boats, it could mean moving around larger equipment.

    The marine architect made some good comments and suggestions.
    Using hot ‘pitch, bitumen or tar’ to seal off the steel shot in keel is a good idea ( they have similar properties). But I would suggest you cut a hole now and fit a 3”/75mm threaded pipe plug while it is easy to do and add the ‘hot tar’ down the hole or you will never do it!
    If there was ever a leak into the area you would want to know.
    The thing to remember is welds are notoriously easy to have pin holes you can’t believe are there but in a tank or boat in water can be a problem . Fortunately the pinhole will rust shut but sometimes its better not to runs in first place!
    I know you are in love with the electric motor drive but nobody without a generator is motoring very far with electric.
    I hope you have generator or build in a bracket or place to bolt on an outboard bracket so you can fit one ( maybe from the dinghy) for when you have to have power.
    There will be times you need it!
    Cheers Warren

    • @lahakai
      @lahakai  Рік тому

      We actually decided we are going to do his suggestion of sealing the keel. We will see how we will get it in there now. You are right about little pin holes. Plus we thought we should do it now and not leave it for the future.
      For the electric motor, we are really looking forward to talking about this much more. Once we get our battery bank in and all the configurations we'll know how much power and distance we can get and tackle that topic of how to live with an electric motor. We'll keep you posted!! Thanks as always Warren!! Cheers!

    Ballancing the boat mathematically rarely works out, as there ar way to many variables in interior materials weight. The safest wat is to go light and add bags of lead shot in the bilge after the boat is in the water and loaded as it normally would be. This als allows the ballance to be changed as you add or remove items(batteries etc), as long as the lead bags are reasonably accessible.

    looking good, progress off the fairing of the terrible welding. Stern extension also a good step forward. But the davits will spoil yr possibility to sail.There will be no balance possible. Maybe in light winds, but if the wind change and that will be very frequent there will be a problem to keep the balance, between the important pressure points. Wind on sails/ships superstructure/ships underwater pressure point and G point..
    When a boat will be hoisted in this davits configuration the ship will be able to be handled under sail with a little more then 20 knots off wind.
    wishing you succes in the coming months and wisdom in the chooses too be made.

He told us that structurally it is fine, even the balance. But we were concerned about corrosion and their build so they are not there anymore. We are working on a different design now that does take into consideration the vertical space and wind. Keep an eye out for that video coming soon! Glad you like the other alteration! You already knew it floated right way up, 'cause you moved it via water from one end of the country to t'other. The real question might be what did you learn on that trip? How was the motion? Was it stiff? rolly? How will further finishing affect that?
