  • Norfolk rhapsody no. 1 is a piece composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1906 (revised in 1914). It begins with an introduction based on two songs, "The Captain's Apprentice" and "The Bold Young Sailor", followed by the main allegro movement, employing three songs; "A Basket of Eggs", "On Board a Ninety-eight" and "Ward, the Pirate". Vaughan Williams had collected several of these songs in the North End of King's Lynn which was home to the majority of the port's fishing community.

If you enjoyed this as much as I did, I recommend you have a look at the new book “The Captain’s Apprentice” by Caroline Davison which is centred on one of the Norfolk folk songs collected by RVW in King’s Lynn in January 1905 which is used in this 11:42 11:42 Rhapsody. Excerpts from the book have been read on Radio 4.
