This definition of party system refers to the typical structure of parties within a political system. It describes the normal number of parties that compete effectively. Thus we may speak of dominant, two-, three- or multi-party systems
    ONE PARTY SYSTEM
A one party system or a one party by definition refers to a political framework where a one/single political party forms and runs the government. This may happen in two ways. Firstly, the activities of the opposition may be completely out lawed such that even the opposition leaders are not allowed to participate in elections. Secondly, the chances of the opposition to clinch power are thwarted by the unfavourable legal framework that is in place
    TWO PARTY SYSTEM
Two-party system, political system in which the electorate gives its votes largely to only two major parties and in which one or the other party can win a majority in the legislature. The United States is the classic example of a nation with a two-party system
American electoral politics has been dominated by two major political parties since shortly after the founding of the republic. Since the 1850s, they have been the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Since the last major party realignment in the mid-20th century, the Democratic Party has been the center-left and liberal party, and the Republican Party has been the center-right and conservative party.
    Multi-Party System
Recall that a multi-party system is a system in which multiple political parties have the capacity to gain control of government offices, separately or in coalition. In other words, multi-party systems are systems in which more than two parties are represented and elected to public office.
    Advantages of a Multi-Party System
A multi-party system affords citizens the opportunity to have as many choices as possible. As such, those in support of the system say it is democratic.
Since there are many parties that are formed in a multi-party system, this allows for minority groups among the electorate to be represented. This also allows for increased political participation by the masses.
    Disadvantages of a Multi-Party System
In many cases, no one party is able to gain power alone. Therefore, it leads to difficulty in formation of government.
Electorates can become bombarded with so many choices to the point where they get confused.
