You have to admit that some of the people on those talent shows truly don't sound good lol but then again, those same talent shows are fake as hell and even if you sound good, they'll always look at everything, not only your voice.
early on i watched because of the terrible singers. i think some sounded bad on purpose so they could get on tv. as the show went on they stopped showing the bad singers and that is when i stopped watching it.
Gotta love Dave Grohl. My vocal coach always told me, "Don't try to sound like anyone else. You're not anyone else. You're you. You have a voice. Use it."
I've sung for most of my 67 years. I don't like my voice when I hear it played back. But numerous people over the years, including multiple recording artists, have told me that I'm a great singer. I sing karaoke, and one night a few years ago my wife and I were out singing. This young lady came up to me afterwards and told me that she's the lead singer in a band, and asked if I would like to sing a coupla numbers with them. So I did "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting." Since then, I've been asked to be the lead singer in a rock band. I declined because I run a business and just sing for a hobby. But I still don't like my own voice.
@@montebrown9528 He only got a record deal for being the former drummer of Nirvana. He wrote a few good songs like Everlong and Big Me but nothing worth a record deal. Now he's selling his soul doing a lame horror movie with the rest of the Foo Fighters and Whitney Cummings 🤮 Makes sense why a real down to earth person and true artist like Kurt always hated him.
My friend auditioned on a lark & got the golden ticket to Hollywood. They sent him home after a few weeks because he didn't have a sob story. They sat him down & said "Tell us about bad things, tragedies that happened in your life." He said that he has a wonderful life, married to his drop-dead gorgeous high school sweetheart, 2 beautiful sons, wonderful friends, has 4 different bands, is able to earn a living doing music full-time, so they sent him home because he's too happy & well adjusted 😆
"The worst thing would be to be famous and not have a lot of money, and that's what that show does to people." Say what you will about Kid Rock but that is the most accurate description of American Idol I've ever heard. Spot on.
I read a comment somewhere recently that said "these shows aren't about the contestants, they're about the judges" and felt that hit the nail on the head.
At least not anymore. The earlier contestants of idol all have great careers because of it, and that was before corporate greed took over. The execution of the show matched the intention in the beginning. You can’t deny that Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert and Jennifer Hudson don’t have incredible careers, but they were lucky. It’s not the same show it used to be in terms of opportunity for artists.
@@BubblyViolin11 Not all contestants when on to great careers after these circus shows. 3 or 4 have made it out of all the years and all the different shows. Winning one of these contest has nothing to do with how great a singer you are. Remember those shows need you to keep the rating up. Every body go's on about getting exposure and i tell them you sure do and now you have ruined any chance you had to make it to the big time. One thing about true musicians is speaking the truth to other musicians about how good or bad they are. Never put false hope in some one, look how horrible Simon and other judges belittle's a lot of people.
I remember back when I used to watch that show, Simon would repeatedly tell the contestants "This is a singing competition." I finally realized that that wasn't true. It wasn't a singing competition, it was a television show.
Same thing with America's Got Talent where sometimes they'll put through garbage acts over people that actually have talent and they just do it for the ratings.
Yeah I remember watching season 3 or so and it was like, the best singers literally went home and there was some hack Sanjaya Barino or something like that making it through basically as a meme. We didnt watch it after that.
These "talent" shows are toxic, in that they add to today's culture of slander on social media platforms. Add Gary Numan to the long lists of innovative artists who'd be rejected by Simon and Co.
Although I hate Cowell, he's just the puppet/face of the machine that's trying to destroy popular music. Doubt Cowell actually had the idea - he's just an in-the-closet guy doing what he's told, probably.
@Darla Haines - Ian Curtis is another one that be rejected. It’s robbing the world of potential artists is what it’s doing. Telling kids they can’t sing because they don’t sound like the modeled music of today. Telling adult artists they’re too old to be there. Robbery.
@@neilsun2521 Simon cowell first launched '5ive' with this talentshow concept on a morning tv show in 1994, they re ran the concept on primetime in the uk in 1999. It was Cowell idea and he done very well out of it, much to the detriment of music.
Reminds of that super talented pianist that was on one of those got talent shows and he played a beautiful classical piece and the judges all played it up like it was boring and uninspired, yawning and acting uninterested, but then the pianist look their shirt off revealing his abs and he started playing generic ass pop tunes and all of a sudden everybody is cheering and clapping and he gets through. Fucking spit in the face to actually talented musicians the world ever
I look at the musicians who did not win and are better for it, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert to name a few. I totally agree with Dave Grohl and Kid Rock.
He had to develop a work ethic somewhere.... Wether you like his music or not dude's been consistently touring and putting out music since the late 80's.
Musicians are the people that made the music. The guys that traveled around in a bus. They wrote the songs and made it famous. Winning a contest is not the same.
One of my dads friends auditioned for Australian Idol 2 decades ago and was told he could sing very well but he was a middle aged eh looking man so they wouldn't be able to market him so they said No to his audition. Broke his heart.
Yep. A friend of mine has a little sister that is a very good singer (the only issue I have is that she yells higher notes for the sake of it) and she got on American Idol was well and they told her she was good and never called her back and to this day don't know why.
@@Seriona1 they didn’t call her back because she couldn’t sing. They obviously told her she was good because she was young and didn’t want to hurt her feelings.
Kid Rock is the Carrot Top of rock and roll. He wanted to be the Vanilla Ice of Romeo Michigan. When aspiring to be a one hit wonder white rapper, had zero payoff.....he decided to become litterally a prop rap/rocker. Using Barnum and Bailey level freak show exploitation and bastardized version's of older hit songs, kid rock built a career.
Honestly I have mad respect for Kid Rock. Regardless of his shit he made sure his kids were taken care of. He’s a solid individual as a whole and made good investments when it came to his family.
Yup. Music today is so shouty. Like movies without explosions, these executives seem to think that quiet vocals don’t work. Imagine Mark Knopfler before Simon, lol.
Of course not I remember on a Interview they asked Simon Cowell what his record collection was they asked examples like Led Zeppelin, The Who and other bands and he’s said no I don’t like that type of music.
When my daughter is self conscious about her singing: "Imagine if Billy Corgan went on American Idol...You think they'd give him a second thought? What about Kurt Cobain? Joni Mitchell? All these people are incredibly successful in music. Making good music is so much more than trying to be the next Britney or Christina." I'm happy to say she went on to play her guitar and sing "Nights in White Satin" in her school talent show to a standing Ovation :)
@@r3strt I completely agree. Most of the music I like wouldn't make it on American Idol, lol! And I think that's kind of the point of this video, is that it excludes what could be wonderful music because it doesn't align with the modern pop "standard". 😉
@@sedgecircle I mean the Punk Ethos was "do it yourself", no matter how much you dont know how to play an instrument or sing or whatever, as long as it sounds good, it's good
I agree with Dave Grohl so much. I am very insecure about my singing and it's sad that you apparently only can sing if you can hit high notes or if you have a clear voice. So that makes me think how bad I am, but Dave here gives me a bit of strength. Because who tf are these judges to determine if you're good or not?
Theres a saying that goes something like 'Dont compare yourself with others but compare yourself with the person you were the day before'. If you make progress and it makes you happy keep singing!
Ever heard of Neil Young? To me he sounds like a wounded dog. But he can write a great song and lots of people still love him. The public are your judges. Not those 4 twats on tv.
Hitting the notes is key, not necessarily high. There are phone apps for that. Rhythm being the other key...So if you want to be more secure, take a class, get an cheap electronic keyboard (always in tune) and press the notes as you sing them. You get the feel for internalizing the wavelengths lol. Really, though, also there are phone apps for any instrument including voice that use the mic on your phone to gauge the tone. Let it listen to the keyboard to check it's accuracy.
Just do what I do. Stop caring and create/release music while you can! I waited 32 years before I even started because of what people think. You got this. Haters need to hate. Let em.
As a retired music teacher, I’ve had a number of former students ask me what song I thought they should audition with for the cattle calls for these shows as they came through town. My response was always, don’t. Instead, I would say, form a group with folks who have similar tastes in musical styles and get together and learn enough songs to go play a set somewhere. Play in front of people, and if they like what you do, learn some more songs and do it some more. I agree with Dave and Kid Rock. Be yourself and find your own way. That’s all that matters.
Absolutely and in this day and age make sure you record every performance make sure you recorded video wise make sure you put it on UA-cam make sure you put it on all of the other channels where people can actually see it and if you turn out to actually be as good as you think you are somebody out there is going to see it and somebody out there is going to buy it
The problem is that pushing a particular formula for a pop star leaves no room for originality and pressing the boundaries. As Zappa put it "Without deviation from the norm, there can be no progress." I think Dave hit it on the head though. Imagine if Dylan stepped up there. Here's a guy that was considered the voice of a generation and he would have been ridiculed off stage.
Rick Beato interviewed Sting, who said people want to be surprised, and his goal was to surprise listeners in every song. Cookie cutter pop "stars" on American Idol and shows like it rarely surprise anyone.
which is why all the music sounds the same..."here's what's selling...push everyone into that mold, and we'll ride it until the money's no longer coming in...ad nauseum..."...
Yep. The ones that have some originality either don’t cope with singing others songs or do but get turned into generic performers and what I liked about them to begin with is gone. Or they hype up their individuallity and become fake and again lose what I originally liked about them.
I don't agree Dave. I've seen and heard every style of music possible. Some very unique and they go through. Some may not come out on top but are discovered and gei gigs and record deals.
I tend to overlook at famous musicians, I guess it's because many of them lose that hunger when they make it and just end up doing it for the money, but it seems like Dave never let fame or fortune strip his passion away when it comes to music, & I can respect that.
Because he came from a band that went from not playing to becoming the most iconic band of all time. You gotta learn to make it to the top. Not try to skip all the steps.
I don't watch any of these talent shows. It's more of a popularity contest, if it was based on talent, then Jennifer Hudson would have won. Same goes for Dancing with the stars.
Didn't expect you here. Tbf I'm not sure if the voice can be blamed. It's the individuals in there that should be judged. Pretty sure all other audition shows have their own disgusting demons. Voice, Idols, Talent, X factor etc.
exactly, I don't know why people are so obsessed with The Voice. From what I saw, it seems to be more about the judges and stroking their egos. Anyways, hey Floor 😍
Back in the days. I preformed with a very, very, huge band. I won't mention their name. But however, I was having my fair share of issues. That I put on myself. Anyway, I met Dave then during that time. And he was really good to me. He treated me, like a human being. And took time to talk to me about things. I will never forget him for it. Thank you David. I appreciate you man.
That is why I love rock music so much is that the musicians and singers are more likely to sing from the heart than these teeny boppers who go on there just for five minutes of fame. Good on you guys(Dave,Kid,Corey ) and the others who stood up for real music.
Ah, that makes you a "thinker" I think? Oh, do email me, I have ten albums to put out but refuse to stand in lines to sing for people !! ABSOLUTELY! YES, YES AND YES ! Of course this is going to come out sounding a bit "prejudiced." but that's fine with me, because there doesn't seem to be a qualified unit of judges anywhere who have collected the statistics on the data yet anyway. Good luck with that, I'd love to SEE it. Seems to me that all contestants in order to qualify to perform AT at a "so-termed" contest, ought to be required to SHOW their proficiency on at least one other musical instrument, other than their VOICE. To stand up and hold a microphone just to shout out what your voice emits, because it can "imitate" other already known as famous VOICES, is just not "singing"...and most who DO really sing into a mike, you will find , have had some great intonation "training" on an instrument other than their voices! That's why IF I took the time to listen to Simon's rants, I'd look for the young instrumentalists whom have gotten together to create an ensemble of their own uniqueness; (There were, and still are, SEVERAL of those btw.) Comparing apples to oranges is another pet peeve of mine; How can a singer who sings perfectly on pitch acapella, who can perform his own original song, be even CONSIDERED TO BE compared to a band of wind players letting off steam for example ? NO COMPARISON, should not even be considered to be a contest at all. In "comparing" the classical musicians, we can see an honest comparison being made, IF both contestants are being judged on their ABILITIES to express the "same exact composition" in a manner in which the LISTENER is educated or intelligent enough to be able to DISCERN elements such as "interpretation" and "expression. The state contests for HIGH SCHOOL were FAIR.... the contestants played the same piece , on the same instrument, and were "fairly compared" on the appropriate elements ...(won a few of those myself, ha, and I really thought the other violinist was BETTER than I was. ..guess the violinist virtuoso who was judging us just liked my longer bows better than his!) I entered thirty or forth songs in the John Lennon, and another last year, just to SEE what would happen and to try to understand their "processing." ; Since a classical piece composed for both solo instrument AND voice, category didn't exist, I had to enter the same song in three different categories; nope, didn't win, and certainly didn't expect to, because the CATEGORY FOR that piece DID NOT EVEN EXIST. So, then, WHOM do you think that song was being compared TO? Well, probably "previously well-trained already famous" COMPOSERS and ARRANGERS ? Sound track symphony composers ? Do you think the contest creators are EVER going to tell YOU that you have created something uniquely different and original...when they don't even know, themselves, HOW TO CATEGORIZE YOUR MUSIC ? Someone asked me years ago, " How do you write a melody ? Where do melodies come from?" You want to try to answer that ? I can't. This one, this question I can answer..." Do you like Elvis ?" Now what a stupid question, and really, requesting an ANSWER ? Well, I liked him when he sang gospel songs, I liked him when he paid for dinner that night, I liked the way he danced around on stage back in the sixty's...What the heck ? I just happened to have liked Elvis "when he sang love songs".... I happened to have NOT liked him when he jumped around in Vegas performing Karate chops ? Ask a reputable "voice coach" about these CONTESTS, and most of them will advise you, to "practice your art, and stop trying to compare yourself to OTHERS." And if you have student whose main goal is "to become a star ?" Get rid of them immediately unless they are proficient at some other musical endeavor, other than bragging ? Stars can be paid for, but they aren't ---usually ------simply born. (Be a few debates on that one I'm sure.) When I was Offred a recording contract with RCA years ago (escorted there personally, by Irwin Pincas (Crossroads Music.) around the time he was with CBS , I was told that "if I sounded LIKE other famous singers, my efforts would be quelled, as they don't want competition for their stars"... Most original writers and singers really don't WANT to "sound like" other singers, anyway... I think that's why many of us are absolutely tired of singers competing at these contests, who DO. My advice to young aspiring singers, is , to learn an instrument, learn to read a few scales, and learn to be yourself, and GLOW into a STAR that others perceive you as. Too many "wanna be STARS" out there who can't cut the mustered when put to the test(s).. SIMON "BANKS" on them.
@@lyndafayesmusic In short that is my thoughts exactly. I'd rather pay money to see a band or a singer who I know has started at the bottom by learning their craft( Dave Grohl is an example), he can play every instrument that is used in the FOO Fighters(R.I.P Taylor). So I wholeheartedly agree. I watch a lot of music Docs about bands of old and it is amazing the hardships these people put up with in the name of RNR.
And people like Karen Carpenter, Laura Nyro, or Vicente Fernandez wouldn't have needed them in the first place. When you've got chops and vision, you don't need Simon Cowell.
Ray Davies, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Steve Winwood, Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, John Fogerty, Bon Scott. Just to name a few, all have distinct voices. The reason we listen to them is not because they fit a carefully groomed profile. What catches your ear is the very unusual difference. Its what's interesting. If you want homogenized sound there's elevator music.
I’ll never forget what Aretha Franklin said about being a judge: “ARTISTS SHOULD NOT JUDGE OTHER ARTISTS” and this was the norm in music until these TV contests were created for TV. When quantity got beneath quality, and faster public exposure was preferred over steady growing publicity. Putting young talented artists on huge platforms when they’re professionally and mentally not ready is setting them up for failure. The only winner are the networks who reproduce format programs again and again and again in every language to infinity and beyond.
Star Search winner Beth Hart was asked to a judge on a TV singing contest and she said no because music is about building people up and not tearing them down.
Two great posts above. And the judges aren't top of their league in their fields either. Some of them are superb but the vast majority are only on the panels because of the drama and stories they bring to the table. And the ones who happen to be superb in their field go down in my estimation by virtue of being on the panel. It says so much about somebody who is willing to be a judge on these shows, and it's all bad.

She should’ve showed up at his house with her Oscar (for singing and acting) in a movie and reminded him of his “critique” and told him “Not bad for a third rate lounge singer on a cruise ship eh”
And funnily enough, the one who wins the contest, the more likely their career dead on arrival, where the top 10 finalist still has their own career path
Don't let people tell you that you can't sing or that you aren't talented we all have our strenghs and thats what make us unique you don't need some celebrity to tell you that you don't matter.
Just to get on Idol, I would need to have lost both parents in a car crash and survived cancer and Ebola. Boy do they like a sob story. Exploiting human tragedy for $$.
Exploiting tragedy is the criminal part, but what do you expect when so many people watch it and don't know that it's wrong? They watch it, talk about it, tweet about it, put it on their facebook page, then come back and watch the next episode. Pathetic.
This is typical psychological manipulation is all. Someones backstory has ZERO relevance on their talent or ability in the present. Then again these type of shows are all about manufacturing drama to feed those addicted to their dopamine fix.
I love Dave Grohl’s take on Bob Dylan. I’m personally conscious of my own voice and for a long time thought that no one would want to hear my nasally voice that people confuse for being a woman/12 year old boy. But then I figured that if bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Our Lady Peace could sell millions of records there’s no reason I couldn’t. Eventually I learned to develop my singing voice into something that I was proud of and fronted a band. Moral of story: embrace who you are and be the best version of yourself.
I am pretty sure that Dylan was not successful because of his voice but because of his lyrics and delivery. Most talent show singers will not be good song writers and, at the end of the day, it really is about the songs.
@@MrTingabug everyone has their own flavors. I personally can’t stand King Diamond but hey he wouldn’t have had a career for 40 years if people didn’t buy what he was selling.
It took me a long time to embrace my voice as well. It's like with anything; the more you do it, the better you get, and new, different voices are what music will always need, especially in the sea of homogenized, autotuned nonsense.
@Tha One I think she's... I hate to say "overrated"... but more overly referenced. In other words, she's not the only game in town; yet, everyone acts like she is. In fact, she wad more an ornament with Fleetwood Mac than a contributing member. She played no instruments, and didn't even sing on many songs, except backing tracks
Thank you so much Dave Grohl for reconfirming That real musicians do make mistakes and it's the magic of keeping it together on stage and keeping it going and keeping the energy going for the Music and the movement.
Auto-tune is another blight on modern music. It makes singers lazy, and creates an environment where there is little incentive to develop good and healthy singing techniques.
I also remember him saying at one point, (paraphrasing) that these guys need to go into their garage and just suck for a long time until they get good. It's part of the experience.
@@MrVvulf I don't think it's a total blight. If you're using it because you're lazy or just slapping it over a track to be trendy then sure it sucks. But some people use it artistically like T-Pain and he makes some damn good music, and he's actually a good vocalist as well.
@@OmarOmarOmar need i mention Fifth Harmony? They were individually rejected and then grouped up and somehow won the judges over. That sounds like bullshit

When the Foo Fighters first came out I, (probably many others), thought, “yeah the drummer from Nirvana gonna be a really hit, sarcastically). He surprised everyone with his talents, and he wasn’t even the drummer anymore!
I’ve taught hundreds of children music, and I quickly realized that pretty much everyone is talented. Everyone is unique and that variety is one of the pleasures of life. Now, sure, if you’re 9 foot tall, you’re probably going to have an advantage as a basketball player. But, you had very little to do with that genetic accident. Music is like everything else. If you have the desire to put enough time into it, you’ll get good at it. The big lie here is that the show is not about finding people with talent. It’s about finding people they can humiliate. It’s unenlightened, cruel and sadistic to get vicarious pleasure out of watching someone “fail.” That’s why I bet a huge portion of the earth’s population would like to punch Simon right in his arrogant, creepy face. That being said, he has definitely put in a lot of time into making himself into such a loathsome character. That’s his “talent.”
Simon Cowell.... I have talent. I've been performing all my life. I know if I went on that overrated televised high school talent show and "the judges belittled live... it would take multiple security guards to pull me off them. Mr Cowell would get the bludgeoning of his life!!!
@Rooster Regarding supposed “tone deafness.” Some young people, especially boys, have trouble matching the sound they hear with the sound coming out of their throat. Have them show you they can vocalize and slide up or down from whatever pitch they start with. Then sing with the note you want and have them slide up or down to that pitch. They will no longer be “tone deaf.” You’re welcome.
Over the years as I've grown older I've come to resent talent shows. They're basically judges dangling money in front of a contestant they can humiliate in front of a live audience and by extension, television.
As someone who has been on American Idol, I can say that the show is horrible to people. The producers look for people who can't sing, tell them that they're amazing and that they'll be fast tracked through right through to the judges. They get their hopes up and make their grandma or whomever is with them believe that they're finally in the big time only to destroy their lives on camera for TV. Its disgusting.
Howard Stern, Howie Mandell and Carmen Electra weren't judges on America Idol, but judges on America's Got Talent, which isn't a singing contest, but a talent contest, and they were qualified judges for it because there are no 'expert judges' for all the different kinds of talent that the show has.
Thank you Dave Grohl and others for being so honest and level-headed. It bothers me when the judges on these shows tell a contestant "you have the whole package". There are so many talented people that get looked over just because their looks or style or whatever are not marketable enough.
I used to have a band, we played a few gigs here and there. we published two albums and never got very far. It annoyed the living hell out of me anytime someone suggested me or the band should go to these "talent shows" and I would categorically respond with "no" because I knew what we were writting, singing and playing was not what that audience or that jury wanted. Band broke up , albums are still published and my aspirations of a musical career are pretty much wrecked..... And I STILL think that's better than American f**** idol
I agree. At least you got two albums that you slaved on. I did 15 years in the trenches. Never cared for fame. Met several air head rectal holes who thought they were amazing. They weren’t. Met several talented people who like us were big fish in the smallest wrong pond. Playing good with the unknowns left me with good memories of crowds cheering. I made peace with it. Some day I hope you can too. These award shows can destroy people by pushing too fast, curbing originality, peddling people like playing cards at a bus stop. I quit watching after the first year.
You are rigth. I was on differents bands. I am not professional, of course, but we played gigs, here and there, as you. We used to spend a lot of time writing and composing, rehealsas... and all the music that we had, we know it was ours. That was my talent show, the best experience in my life ever. when I was teenager I thought is not tha bad and used to see this tv shows, but nowedays i know is a big machine creating the same artists everytime.
“It’s a little nasally and a little flat…next”. So funny and true. Sad to think of people who probably gave up their dreams after being rejected on that talent show or tryouts. I’m sure the world has been deprived of talent somewhere along the line.
It is unimaginably depressing to think of promising musicians, people who could have gotten better, get humiliated onstage, and be forced into an office job.
Sports are logical. When the ball goes into the goal it's a point. More points = winner. Music and art has no specified point system. There's no way to logically determine which performance is better. More votes doesn't mean it's better, it just means more people voted for it. Any other conclusions to make from that are speculation
If it was just an art then you wouldn't get paid for your music either so just like everything in life it's a sport because we're constantly competing against each other.
True, it is not a sporting event. But music IS competitive. Auditions of any type are competitive, by definition. And classical music has long had actual competitions, some of them very prestigious, for vocalists and instrumentalists. Music competitions are held at many levels. My daughter studied vocal music at an arts magnet high school; she and many of her classmates participated in regional singing contests. It's definitely true that certain types of real talent are not going to do well on American Idol. But that show and similar ones have produced some terrific talent with excellent careers. Other winners have fizzled out. I suspect it would be better if these competitive shows were held every few years, rather than on a yearly basis.
I was a musician singing in clubs in a band, duo and I did solo shows, I tried to apply for the first Australian idol but I was 28 and you had to be under 28. I hated the shows like this, but years later I applied for The Voice, at this point I had played over 100 gigs, I wasn’t famous, I played small clubs but people enjoyed me, the wait staff always told me that I was the best they heard at the club. But I never heard from the voice, I think my story wasn’t good enough. People that make it become stars but their live performance is nowhere near as good as many struggling musicians, we have experience, but we are considered by many who watch the show as being not good enough to make the show. If I had a dollar for every person that said to me after a show “you should be on the voice” I would have made more money than I did playing the gigs. I hate these shows and some of the 15 minutes of fame contestants that I have met truly believe that they are special, I say “talk to me in 5 years time, let’s see where you are. They can nail one song, I’m in the club singing 40 songs a night.
*going on one of these shows is the absolute DUMBEST thing you could ever do. It still astonishes me that people think that IDOL actually let people decide who came and went. Thats not how that worked EVER. The texting your vote or calling in your vote was 1. to invest people in the show and 2. it was an ad for ATT who sponsored the show. The Producers had weekly meetings and they would decide who was leaving and who was staying. Thats how Idol has always worked.*
As a musician for over 25 years i know that sound is just something personal and individual, just like the taste of food. There is no good or bad, right or wrong. The taste in music (or sound) is actually something that can change over time. In some cases you like a song the first few times you heard it and after hearing it hundreds of times you absolutely dislike it (or even wonder why you ever liked it in the first place). It can also be the other way around, you've heard a song hundreds of times and suddenly you start to like it or even love it.

Whether you like Bob Dylan's voice or not, Dave Grohl has a good point. People like Dylan, John Lennon, Louis Armstrong, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder and Tom Waits will not make it in shows like American Idol because their voices are extremely unique. Not to mention that these shows are heavily scripted to gain viewers and do not necessarily resemble 'reality' as well.
Yah. These people want music to be about this generic, boring, perfect voice that very few people have, and the wonderful, imperfect voice of Dylan, Cash, or Kobain would have been rejected. Why even bother with art, when these hawkish simpletons get to crush your dreams summarily to keep their medium sterilized and dull.
Nearly every rock and metal vocalist I like wouldn't "make it" (Lol) on American Idol-type shows. Those shows are just part of the mainstream pop world, nothing more.
@@Bryan-ed6eeMost of those guys can really sing, although a few of them have unconventional voices. I don't like Dylan's voice (although I love his lyrics) but I could see someone like Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash? They had amazing voices. (I love Eddie Vedder's voice. I blew out my voice singing Pearl Jam and Nirvana songs back in the 90s.)
Playing music in a band where everyone around you is 100% dedicated to bringing a song to life...practicing in basements, slugging it out night after night in bars, dumps, etc...to hone your craft! That is what music is really all about! Singers are a different breed of musician and while there are some who are born with perfect pitch and a great voice, I'll take someone who has a lesser voice but gives every inch of their soul on stage and works hard...every day of the week. American Idol is just a corporate talent show for the music and television industry...it's all about money! Music is about something much much deeper that cannot be bought, processed, or sold.
Singing for the most part is a learned skill. Telling somebody they're never going to be good at something is counterproductive and cruel. Nobody starts out being a great guitar player or a great piano player or a great drummer and the same goes for The Voice. It's just another instrument that you need to learn how to navigate.
American Idol got him the exposure, but he didn't need to win in order to have a successful music career. They probably would have ruined him if he'd won.
I had an assumption that he was voted out because he himself wanted out of the competition (probably because of the highly restrictive contracts they must sign), not because of actual vote counts... There really is no way that Chris Daughtry gets the lowest vote... LOL
Music has just become a looks contest, grohl says it beautifully, who's to say who's good or not, if u love something, continue, never be told not to do what you want to do
The horror it would be to imagine if all our great vocalists out there had to pass through the American Idol judging and voting system. There would be only a few albums on the shelf and nobody buying them.
The Voice is worse pal. I mean I don't hate the show, I can watch with my mom anytime if it's on air and I like the coaches, BUT they focus only on the coaches. Excluding Melanie Martinez, there hasn't been a successful finalist or even winner of the American version of The Voice.
Bands and/or individual singers either capture your attention or they don't. There's no right or wrong way. It's the feeling of the music that wows yourself or not. As Lennon once said to a fan who asked him "What is this song about"? And he answered its what YOU get out of the song. My meaning could be totally different than yours. As long as it makes you feel happy or makes you think. RIP John Lennon, poet, artist, lyricist, muscian, thinker, world shaker, humanitarian and lover of all things!
I started playing guitar in 1966 and ended up with a mediocre career which was tremendous fun. I ended up getting a real job in the early 80s so I could feed my kids. When Idol and other "talent shows" got popular, I often ended up in conversations with co-workers about contestants on American Idol. I usually cut the discussions short by stating, "I have worked with musicians and singers who can perform better than anyone on American Idol, AND they could do it for five 40-minute sets per night, 6 or 7 nights per week, in little clubs so filled with smoke one could barely breathe.

American Idol and its successors are a charade, they are all just television, not music, and bad television at that! All of the bands & musicians I listen to have integrity and sincerity, they weren't looking to be validated by corporate shills; their music speaks for itself.
I remember when one singer (who was very good ) in my country was denied because one of the judges "don't like that type of music". (he was singing a rock song) and dude had a full on pop musicians voice too. A lot of the times they don't make sense.
When I hit my teen years ages ago there was a show that came on television called Star Search. None of us watched it, none of us talked about it at school or at dinner tables anywhere. It was a variety show with mostly young wannabe singers from what I recall. I think they put it on Saturday nights (the worst night to put a show on in primetime) and it actually stayed there for years. As with quiz shows and certain movie remakes, so much of a network or movie studio's stuff to me is re-packaging a tired, old formula because why not? If it hits it will be huge and if it flops they'll know in no time and they'll just cancel it/pull it. It's not gonna tank a network or a movie studio. There's too much possible upside to so much of this stuff when it comes to advertising and box office, strictly a business decision. Nobody is nurturing career paths here.
If these shows were judge by people with long successful careers then they might get good acts from it who are more than just a voice. If someone like Bruce Dickinson judges you and supports you on a show like, that would be huge because he's got the talent, the stage presence and the 40+ year career to back it up. The problem is the judges are all backroom people with no real indication of what it's like to be on the stage and just sit there taking the money.
While I agree with you especially with Simon Cowell and superstar Randy Jackson, but American Idol also had Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, Mariah Carey, Niki Minaj, Keith Urban, and Steven Tyler. Still a shitty show lmao

The mainstream music industry despises anything metal. Which is a good thing for metal fans, who attend to cheaper shows to be with like minded individuals, listening to their fav genre. Musicians also don't mind playing what they really like instead of pop and R&B bs. Never forget that such option comes with a price for them as well.

I participated in a similar “talent” show few years ago. I got eliminated on the second round. I learnt my lesson from that experience. I now do it on my own.
Don't know in America. But in Indo, Idol really drove music trend and as an industrial machine, they could directing national music taste at huge scale to the point that they want. Of course you won't see metal singer, blues or charismatic rocker there. They're just side show, and in the final, the grand finalists usually a new popstar who had no clues how big the tides of industry and all of gimmick dramatic scenes would swallow them. The one who ended their contract with Idol management often got blacklisted in their TV channel, and just few survived with their new brand that really differs from before. Many just ended up swallowed in tight contract that killed their creativity.
Simon Cowell's actually pretty honest about it. The most real thing he ever said on American Idol is that it's just a singing contest, they aren't looking for an artist. He specifically pointed out that Tom Petty couldn't win American Idol.

Totally agree! Most successful artists in the music industry have paid their dues, earned their fans. There's so much more to it than picking up a mic and expanding on a version of a popular song. These contestants are coached before they perform their songs. In real life that doesn't happen. The only upshot I can see for most contestants is if they already have the experience, don't win and are able to capitalize on the exposure. Jennifer Hudson is a good example. As for singing, it is about finding your own unique voice and sharing it. The sooner that it is realized, the more freedom you have to be a unique artist. Attend a university voice class recital: All of the students sound the same. How many of them go on to actually have careers and how many are non-performing voice teachers?
To confirm this just the other day a band was playing an original song, and my mom with no musical education or background asked if it was a cover band, what happened was that the singer as good as he was is a cover band singer so he must have acquired a lot of techniques to cover for different singers but in the end he sounds like a cover singer and not unique.
In the Hungarian edition of,if I remember correctly, Rising Star there was a guy,he is the lead singer of Hungarian power metal band Tűzmadár( Firebird). He went on the show, sang and also played the bass guitar,in the second round they were singing duets,it was a classical rock piece from Hungary. He has a really good voice, perfect for powerful songs, well the judges voted him out that he is not good enough. You can check him out,his name is Schrott Péter.
I'd venture to say MTV began the decline of music by attatching image to the artist. That's when it didn't matter what your actual talent level was, or how much true conviction you performed with. Only how you looked, and the rest can be done with autotune and programmed computer music. It's gotten worse with shows like American idol. Then you have streaming sites like Spotify which are basically legal napsters making it impossible to earn a living through recording music.
Enrico - I believe it was Eric Clapton (I could be mistake) who was asked what he thought when MTV started. His response? "The music just became unimportant". I thought that summed it up pretty well.
It began much earlier than MTV. Punk was all about the look. Before that, Glam Rock. Try the Beatles’ various incarnations, not to mention the Beach Boys. Even in the fifties it was important to have your quiff just right - if you were a man. And it probably started even before him, but try looking up Franz Liszt…

I've sung for most of my 67 years. I don't like my voice when I hear it played back. But numerous people over the years, including multiple recording artists, have told me that I'm a great singer. I sing karaoke, and one night a few years ago my wife and I were out singing. Kid Rock is the Carrot Top of rock and roll. He wanted to be the Vanilla Ice of Romeo Michigan. Using Barnum and Bailey level freak show exploitation and bastardized version's of older hit songs, kid rock built a career.

A broken clock’s right twice a day.
Honestly I have mad respect for Kid Rock. Regardless of his shit he made sure his kids were taken care of. He’s a solid individual as a whole and made good investments when it came to his family.
Agree with Grohl. I've been saying for years that Bob Dylan could not get a record contact in the current climate.
Yup. Music today is so shouty. Like movies without explosions, these executives seem to think that quiet vocals don’t work. Imagine Mark Knopfler before Simon, lol.
Dylan, Neil Young, Geddy Lee, Brian Johnson ....
Can you imagine Dylan autotuned?
Can you imagine if Kurt cobain went on that show? He'd be laughed at
Of course not I remember on a Interview they asked Simon Cowell what his record collection was they asked examples like Led Zeppelin, The Who and other bands and he’s said no I don’t like that type of music.
Joni Mitchell sings just fine by any standard. She just really doesn't know love at all.
Kurt Cobain has a great voice, but not by modern pop standards. he'd never make it on american idol but that doesnt matter, his music is still great
@@r3strt I completely agree. Most of the music I like wouldn't make it on American Idol, lol! And I think that's kind of the point of this video, is that it excludes what could be wonderful music because it doesn't align with the modern pop "standard". 😉

If you make progress and it makes you happy keep singing!
same, I only sing when I got the music loud enough that I don't hear myself 🤣🤣

"Before you own the garage, you need to learn to sweep the floor". Brilliant.
Letting the establishment decide what is good for us is destroying society.
which is why all the music sounds the same..."here's what's selling...push everyone into that mold, and we'll ride it until the money's no longer coming in...ad nauseum..."...
You can really tell how passionate Dave is about music
I tend to overlook at famous musicians, I guess it's because many of them lose that hunger when they make it and just end up doing it for the money, but it seems like Dave never let fame or fortune strip his passion away when it comes to music, & I can respect that.
And in total lockstep with the lockdown! Another”rebel” kowtowing to the man!

Didn't expect you here. Tbf I'm not sure if the voice can be blamed. It's the individuals in there that should be judged. Pretty sure all other audition shows have their own disgusting demons. Voice, Idols, Talent, X factor etc.
I remember seeing a guy get up and play perfectly a blues song. Sang perfectly and everything. Judges passed him up. I was like WTF?
exactly, I don't know why people are so obsessed with The Voice.
Rock was born from blues. Blues was all about singing from the heart.
JuppppPpP
That's why IF I took the time to listen to Simon's rants, I'd look for the young instrumentalists whom have gotten together to create an ensemble of their own uniqueness; (There were, and still are, SEVERAL of those btw.)
Comparing apples to oranges is another pet peeve of mine; How can a singer who sings perfectly on pitch acapella, who can perform his own original song, be even CONSIDERED TO BE compared to a band of wind players letting off steam for example ? NO COMPARISON, should not even be considered to be a contest at all. In "comparing" the classical musicians, we can see an honest comparison being made, IF both contestants are being judged on their ABILITIES to express the "same exact composition"
in a manner in which the LISTENER is educated or intelligent enough to be able to DISCERN elements such as "interpretation" and "expression. The state contests for HIGH SCHOOL were FAIR.... the contestants played the same piece , on the same instrument, and were "fairly compared" on the appropriate elements ...(won a few of those myself, ha, and I really thought the other violinist was BETTER than I was. ..guess the violinist virtuoso who was judging us just liked my longer bows better than his!)
I entered thirty or forth songs in the John Lennon, and another last year, just to SEE what would happen and to try to understand their "processing." ; Since a classical piece composed for both solo instrument AND voice, category didn't exist, I had to enter the same song in three different categories; nope, didn't win, and certainly didn't expect to, because the CATEGORY FOR that piece DID NOT EVEN EXIST.

So true
Well said!
*The fact that people like Howard Stern, Howie Mandell and Carmen Electra were judging peoples singing is one of the main reasons I NEVER auditioned.*
howie mandell would be kicking rocks
Howard Stern, Howie Mandell and Carmen Electra weren't judges on America Idol, but judges on America's Got Talent, which isn't a singing contest, but a talent contest, and they were qualified judges for it because there are no 'expert judges' for all the different kinds of talent that the show has.

It is unimaginably depressing to think of promising musicians, people who could have gotten better, get humiliated onstage, and be forced into an office job.
Music is not a sporting event. It's art.
Sports are logical. When the ball goes into the goal it's a point. More points = winner. Music and art has no specified point system. There's no way to logically determine which performance is better. More votes doesn't mean it's better, it just means more people voted for it. Any other conclusions to make from that are speculation
'Robert plant and Jim Morrison wouldn't be on x factor '
If it was just an art then you wouldn't get paid for your music either so just like everything in life it's a sport because we're constantly competing against each other.
@@kingdome-dw9ib what are you talking about? Have you ever bought a painting? That’s a really dumb thing you just said.
Imagine all the gawd awful span and pop-ups you get by voting
Love the voice... of experience. I would love to attend this man show rather than spend a minute with talent shows
As a musician for over 25 years i know that sound is just something personal and individual, just like the taste of food.

Could you imagine them telling Layne Staley your voice isn't good enough.

The fact that, for me at least, there is an AGT ad right below this video shows just how right these musicians are.
Gosh all hemlock, you are overly correct and i couldn't concur more.
Singing for the most part is a learned skill. Telling somebody they're never going to be good at something is counterproductive and cruel. Nobody starts out being a great guitar player or a great piano player or a great drummer and the same goes for The Voice. It's just another instrument that you need to learn how to navigate.

Yes he did. That's why you know who he is.
LOL
Adam Lambert didn't even win Idol, and now he's the lead singer of freakin' Queen.

Well, to be fair, you’d already lost some, but I digress. ‘Mustered’ means to assemble, as in troops, etc. ‘Mustard’ is the term you were looking for ( I assume you know its meaning)? Now before you go blaming spell check, uh no, it did not change your ‘mustered’ word because it did not try to change mine. Just a small reality check from one Lynda to another. Kid Rock was spot on!! Never felt the need to watch Idol, The Voice, or any of these type of “shows”. Ever!
I always thought this show was crap and it's good to see my opinion backed by successful industry professionals

I met one of my idols after a show and I asked how I could get as good as he was. He told me, "be as good as you can be, and then you win. I hope you surpass me one day"
It appeals to lower-income individuals who find themselves desperate to get out of their socioeconomic situation, disabled people have been made fun of on these shows as well. Talent is measured in many ways, one is absolute, one is relative to where you started, and these shows highlight nothing but another empty and capitalist form of entertainment that commercialises potential and crushes it.
I think you are describing the NBA. lol
Not being able to sing isn't a disability lmao.
What's funny about the RATM clip is that the label they are on is owned by Sony and so was the label for the X-Factor winner. So well done, folks....You just gave Sony 1 & 2 chart spots at Christmas

Randy Jackson also gets more of a pass than you would think, he's been in the business a while and he's been both a session and a live bass player for many famous acts, notably Journey.

I grew up in the Era of Garage bands. And when the neighborhood garage band needed a new member you put an add in the newspaper. How times have changed.
I'm 18 I have my own Metal band but no one wants to join because everyone likes that generic pop shit with extremely overpowering bass that blows speakers. I wish I grew up in the era of Thrash Metal and Death Metal.
Garage bands still do that… and pop bands never did. The times haven’t changed much at all, actually.

I worked as a music therapist building people's confidence and self-worth in a variety of settings. This show was the opposite of what I was doing, and while it may not seem like a big deal because it's "just tv," I met so many who were afraid, embarrassed, or ashamed to use their voice because they were told they "sounded like those people on the show (the ones heavily teased)."
I'm glad so many famous musicians are speaking up against AI and other similar shows. 💕
Didn't one of the contestants kill themselves after getting laughed at by the judges?
Some of those ppl are actors and actresses. Facts. Bc you know? For entertainment value and all
@@ahhwe-any7434 I still don't get how that would play out. That would become public knowledge, and would probably cause problems down the road for setting up a show with fake contestants...
Because make no mistake, editing video footage from ordinary people without talent who have absolutely no clue that they should not even be trying to persue a career in music to make them look like complete morons so that we can have a good laugh is surprisingly easy.
After all: "Manipulation starts when you grab a camera"...
I'll never forget the first time I heard a group on MTV ('80s) called "An Overnight Success" and they responded, "Yes, it only took us 10 years. It gave me perspective into a lot of things.
One of the most incredible vocalists is Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. Could you imagine him on American Idol belting out "The Trooper" or any other of his dynamic vocals?
Oh christ, I can just hear the judges: "You've got range but you're too rough. Plus you're short and a little weird-looking. NEXT."
He was actually asked to be a judge on The Voice, which is another shitty talent singing show. His response was;
"That show sounds so crap and demeaning to everyone involved, I took great delight in turning the BBC down.
The X Factor is appalling enough, it’s no better than Opportunity Knocks"
Bruce is a legend for a reason.
Damn straight
Imagine Varg Vikernes pulling up with an electric guitar with no amp and a table playing one of his songs humming
The mainstream music industry despises anything metal. Which is a good thing for metal fans, who attend to cheaper shows to be with like minded individuals, listening to their fav genre. Musicians also don't mind playing what they really like instead of pop and R&B bs. Never forget that such option comes with a price for them as well.

that's garbage - they aren't trying to make you sing a certain way - that's ridiculous this is based on assumptions - their assumptions - these people are the rejects of these shows - they have no backbone they have to throw shade to feel they are a good musician and TV shows are bad - yep sour grapes

I participated in a similar “talent” show few years ago. I got eliminated on the second round. I learnt my lesson from that experience. I now do it on my own.
I absolutely love the artist's perspectives on this. No matter what, sing if it gives you joy.
Simon Cowell knows nothing about music. Just a money grabber...
@@barneyronnie He knows a ton about music. He also knows about making money.
@@captainjefferies9047 Quite a difference between being knowledgeable about music and actually being a musician. I studied to be a concert pianist, practicing long hours for years. I did so because I enjoyed doing it. Later, I became enamored with science and earned a PhD in mathematical physics. Money does not impress me at ALL, but rest assured, I do okay. One must realize that some people are extremely wealthy simply because of inheriting the wealth of their ancestors. Sorry, but Simon strikes me as an entitled prick who gained his riches through the talent of others. Give him a call to see if he'd like to hang out with you. Seeing Kid Rock make a good point is just like that one meme that goes “Heartbreaking: the worst person you know made a great point”. Feels weird lol
I'm a musician and the first lime I watched one of these shows, a contestant said he wanted to express his originality. And one judge said she knew how to do that for him. All she had him do were cover songs and he did not win. Haven't watched any of them since.
