Thanks for showing a cut through oak, until now every video shows only soft woods. These Silky saws are amazing, practically unbelievable, they seem to cut near as fast as a chainsaw with no need for maintenance or fuel 🙂👍
Hey mate good choice of saw. I have the gomboy 240 curved medium tooth blade & the sugowaza 420 & katanaboy 650. I to have the sugowaza for shelter building & processing timber. A couple of tips. The sugowaza has that semi hook on the tip of the blade , to help amateurs with fully drawing the blade into the log / timber . The hook will basically stop you from withdrawing the blade through the log. It effectively acts like a bigger saw & cuts much faster then the strokes in the video. Being a few years on I'm sure you are getting the full benefits of the saw now . Mind you this is the 1st video of yours I've watched.. thanks mate.
I have the folding variation, GomBoy and LongBoy, used for pruning fruit trees and 16 oak trees. Silky is the preferred saw globally in the in Arbor community. This weekend I trimmed oak suckers in 10 minutes. The saws cut like a hot knife through butter
I just spent the weekend in the woods bucking up wood with a Katanaboy. We felled and cut up two entire trees with that thing. I love my Gomboy and Pocketboy but these larger Silkeys are something else. I really liked the ability to use two hands with the Katanaboy. That will be my next saw.
Thank you Ben for a look at this saw. I think that this saw would have a optional purpose. Absolutely not for a "get home" kit, and maybe not even for a "bug out" kit. Absolutely useful for the homestead or for an "I'm never coming home" inch bag though. I would love to see this saw put up against a Boreal 21 saw, or the Bob's Quick 21 saw. I think it would be a great alternative to these, in carry, weight and performance.
with bow saws you are limited by size but you really don't need anything overly large for shelters or fire. I like the speed you get with these and the packability although some of those bow saws pack up pretty neat. Not having to put it together is a nice feature as well.
Got Silky pocket boy, big boy, and katana boy...all of them are incredible... for those unfamiliar with Silky...they are a Japanese style saw and work on the PULL stroke only...takes a little to get use to...but AWESOME saws. All the VERY BEST!
Great saw. I own two silky saws and love them. I enjoy your vids and some items I think are overpriced. This is one channel I go to get recommendations of products. I like the fact you give honest reviews. That's why I've been a subscriber for about 18 months. Merry Christmas to you and your family,Ben. God Bless
seeing you go through that oak sold me, took around 40 seconds, we have black oaks on our property here and it would have taken 15-20 minutes chopping through a branch half the size of the one you did using an axe!
The efficiency of a full sized tool like this melts away time and calories burn, obviously depends on application, but if you're planing on building a shelter or serious fire wood, it's probably worth the size and weight. Also awesome trail cleaner, ATVers. Thanks for the demo. Nice vid.
Good demo LS! I am doing my research now on the Silky's. Looking at the Sugowaza and the Sugoi. And the Katanaboy for canoe route portage trail and campsite clearing.
Hi Ben, Greetings from Wales. Very good review of the saw. Looks good for zombie culls too! I have the Silky Pocket Boy and the Silky Big Boy and use them often for clearing blow-downs that block our paths here in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons. Best regards and many thanks, Phil
the Sugowaza is fierce but I would only have it for the cabin, for my pack I would use that really cool Silky folder you have in the video. ty for a great vid as always.
Agree 100%. Best all-around saw available. Paid $75 us on eBay from Japan. worth every penny. I also have the katanaboy 650 for big stuff and the pocketboy. love them all. silky rules.
Well that looks pretty awesome, never heard of it before this video. It’s tempting because i know how good silky blades are, but I’m still going to stick with my Gomboy 240, it’s shorter but still big enough for any of the trees in your video, and has one distinct practical advantage: you can unfold the blade at two angles. In the furthest unfolded position, the saw has a “back bow” that allows you to easily saw wood laying on the ground or any flat surface really. The sugowaza would be pretty annoying to use in that way. If I were a landscaper, or had the patience to rig up saw horses like you did, I’d use that thing all day, but as it is I’m more often sawing firewood on the ground, picnic table or other available surface. If I do ever find the need to up my saw game though, this would be the one, they really make great stuff.
I have a Samurai 330 and a CEuk Trojan 300.. I also have the Sugowaza .. all brilliant saws, but this beast is as quick as a small chainsaw but cheaper to run, environmentally friendly .. and quieter ! .. Go on treat yourselves
I have the katana boy and this is the next one I'm going to get they are spectacular saws. keep up the good work brother good video still impressed here.
Great saw, thought about buying the zubat, alone with the silky big boy saws,an probably a portable hand axe hatchet, to to have all around tools in the woods an my puukko 140,I believe I'd be ok.
great video (as always) .. this is indeed perfect for the camping / car emergency bag... as I kayak camp I will have to carry a folder for many times the river/ creeks are blocked by downed trees ..but maybe this would work since its in my kayak.. Love how easily it did the oak... as my friend says, " THREE thumbs up... " .. he had an accident as a kid and split his left thumb in two...Also saw (see what I did there lol) that your a south paw...) any problems with that grip being a lefty?
Nice looking, never owned that one, I have the Zubat, Ibuki, Sugoi, Kamisorime, Gomtoro, and now I just got a Tsurugi. Zubat is my fave so far. Looks powerful, I'd rather carry the Zubat backpacking, it's smaller , lighter and cuts 90% as fast as that one.
The reason Zubat is my favorite is the size and cutting power, I'm sure the sugowaza is super fast cutting and super nice. But for climbing around in trees (I'm an arborist) I don't want anything any bigger. The slip gard looks nice but it will get caught on things, my saw in tree needs to be low profile, my new favorite is the Tsurugi, for tree work.
Silky needs to make a push cut bow saw blade for the agawa canyon folding bow saw, that would be epic. & make it without the impulse hardened teeth like the sugowaza, Silky cutting power but with bow saw blade durability.
Lean back on the pull, flow through up and over the cut on the push taking care to throw rigidly with a moderately firm grip slightly loosening temporarily as you change tack.
I AM LAUGHING ( LMAO ) @ THIS VIDEO.... NOT BECAUSE YOU ARE FUNNY, BUT BECAUSE MY CHRISTMAS PRESENT, TO MYSELF, SHOWED UP LITERALLY YESTERDAY IN MY POST OFFICE BOX!!!! IE, THE SUGOWAZA. NOW THIS VIDEO SHOWS UP IN MY EMAIL INBOX.... YES I AM LMAO & LOVING MY BAD ASS SAW... ( MY CHRISTMAS TREE IS SHAKING THOUGH )
Between an axe and a saw, which you are prefer? The saw looks like only need a little effort to use and smaller room than axe. Even much lighter than axe. Does it become dull faster relatively than axe?
a saw for the most part. only time I carry an axe would be if I know I am going to have to split lots of wood in the winter. otherwise the saw packs better for me.
Good review of good silky saw. A like for it. A combination of Kabar fighting utility knife, Condor Greenland hatchet and silky folding Gomboy with medium tooth is perfect set for any outdoor adventures IMHO. ^_^
No doubt silky saws are great performers. However they come at an equally great price. For my money, I use an Irwin Marathon Protouch Coarse Cut Carpenters saw. I use a 15" for backpacking and 24" for winter camping. The 15" can be had for about $18 Canadian dollars when on sale. I have videos on my channel that show the saw in action and the other winter wood processing tools I use.
How does this one compare to the silky big boy 2000 folding saw? I have it and it's been a GREAT saw! It does the work of a larger saw, but still compact and lightweight.
Josh Ferguson If you tried this, or the smaller Zubat, you'll probably never use the 2000 again. Last time I used the 2000 was to throw it in the air trying to knock a drone out of a tree...
PREPAREDMIND101 The 2000 wasn't too bad in the open except it could have been a little more stable. In tight spaces it was pretty annoying. I imagine the smaller size eliminates both of these issues. I appreciate the response!
PREPAREDMIND101, you can say that again...I was on a job a while ago and saw it and had to have it...then I saw the video you did reviewing it, and I was like, yup, if Chris approves, then it must be good. Hehe
I just bought the Silky bigboy 2000 for my 4 x 4. Not everyone will be using these for a dedicated backpacking saw where weight matters. I'm also looking at their HUGE katana boy for my 4 x 4 kit
its bout 90$ right? i think its great but im poor and a 36 in bow saw can cut pretty good with a hardwood blade on it.ut might dull faster but anither blade is like 12$ only.guess everybody has a fav.i would love a big boy or this sugowaza
Is there anything bad about the saw, other than size? How long have you used it? Kind of tired about people just posting equipment and giving positive reviews without really using the gear. Cutting a few few logs out back just doesn't cut it, no pun intended, any more.
Mark DeKruyter What's supposed to happen over time? Some things, like this, have a "known commodity" factor. Gear reviewers build an encyclopedia of product factoids the longer they do it, and even on first impression videos we're usually not going in blind. To answer your question, It's a weird size where smaller things can be awkward. For more universal/common use, I prefer the smaller Silky Zubat.
Mark DeKruyter the handle loosened up a bit when I first got it. I used it for several days cutting firewood when camping and after tightening it down it has worked perfect since.
Every reviewer on UA-camr as soon as brownie saw that just got today it's a great saw okay agree to How Great is it after two or three years of you since I've used how do you as if you were to go cut see a cord of firewood with it what do you still say it's a great song?
Its cool but for the size I would rather take a bow saw with a similar blade length. A bow saw would be lighter and normally cost a lot less. My EKA viking has a 20 inch blade, is half the weight and half the cost all in a packable that folds up to a much smaller packable size.
Yeah man that's right , the semi hook @ the end of the blade, is for the less experienced ( like me ) . It allows you to draw the full length & that will stop you from withdrawing the blade . You can actually usually draw the end of the blade about a 1/4 - 1/3 the way through the log . That makes for much faster cuts & basically acts like a larger saw.
i find it exagerated to buy such a professional saw for hiking/camping, these are expensive because they are extra sharp and made for extended professinal use for tree care and pruning works, because it's important for the health of the plants. but if you have enough money why not, they are defenitely worth the money.
Thanks for showing a cut through oak, until now every video shows only soft woods. These Silky saws are amazing, practically unbelievable, they seem to cut near as fast as a chainsaw with no need for maintenance or fuel 🙂👍
Look like I need to get one of these. Its curve really adds to the cutting efficiency it appears. Thanks for your time in making all us videos
Hey mate good choice of saw. I have the gomboy 240 curved medium tooth blade & the sugowaza 420 & katanaboy 650. I to have the sugowaza for shelter building & processing timber. A couple of tips. I just bought this. Between you PM101 AND Canadian Prepper you guys are an unstoppable force

I have a Boreal 21 and there's no way I can cut through oak that size that fast and effortlessly. I'm impressed.
Got Silky pocket boy, big boy, and katana boy...all of them are incredible... for those unfamiliar with Silky...they are a Japanese style saw and work on the PULL stroke only...takes a little to get use to...but AWESOME saws. All the VERY BEST!
I bought it for pruning the big fruit trees on our property and the smooth cut is essential for the tree to recover.
Support my channel when you shop on Amazon: amzn.to/2gpYl7P
That´s an impressive saw. I got the Silky Zübat, which is a bit smaller than the Sugowaza and fits inside any pack I have, but still cuts very well.
many like the zubat as well. for me since I have the smaller saw I might as well go big with the other.
Great saw. I own two silky saws and love them. I enjoy your vids and some items I think are overpriced. This is one channel I go to get recommendations of products. used it today!
Chainsaw?
Wow that really was a straight clean cut for a folding saw !
no kidding. although this one doesn't fold.
The efficiency of a full sized tool like this melts away time and calories burn, obviously depends on application, but if you're planing on building a shelter or serious fire wood, it's probably worth the size and weight. Also awesome trail cleaner, ATVers. Thanks for the demo. Nice vid.
thanks for the comment.
Unbelievable! This saw is amazing! I'm just wondering how it fits into a pack.
Bro, thats the most wicked looking saw I've ever seen! Very sharp too.... Wicked!
it's a great saw for sure.
Good demo LS! I am doing my research now on the Silky's. Looking at the Sugowaza and the Sugoi. And the Katanaboy for canoe route portage trail and campsite clearing.
All of them are great saws, just comes down to size, packability etc. You will like anything you get from them.
Hi Ben, Greetings from Wales. Very good review of the saw. Looks good for zombie culls too! I have the Silky Pocket Boy and the Silky Big Boy and use them often for clearing blow-downs that block our paths here in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons. Best regards and many thanks, Phil
thanks for watching Phil.
the Sugowaza is fierce but I would only have it for the cabin, for my pack I would use that really cool Silky folder you have in the video. ty for a great vid as always.
that one is coming up!
Agree 100%. Best all-around saw available. Paid $75 us on eBay from Japan. worth every penny. I also have the katanaboy 650 for big stuff and the pocketboy. love them all. silky rules.

very nice review! Looks almost effortless!
it is indeed if you have room for it.
you see the 180? lol ;)
Nice saw! Love Silky saws!!
I bought similarly that one at liquidation store only $8.00 Can. About ten years ago. I has been used it many time and it still in good condition
Very impressive, man ! That thing looks like u r cutting butter logs! lol! Good stuff my man.
Silky,the best👍
Silkys are great saws! I wished I had known about them sooner.
it's never too late! lol.
Silky saws rock, period.
agreed.
I have the katana boy and this is the next one I'm going to get they are spectacular saws. keep up the good work brother good video still impressed here.
thanks tony. silky are the fasting cutting IMO. That little 180 does twice the work of a laplander. Have a great weekend and thanks for the comment.
Another good informative video.
Q: what kind of gloves are those ? Are you doing a video on them ?
How does this saw cut compared to the company flagship model Silk Bigboy2000 ? I have the 2000, used it a lot, very happy with it.
Thank you for the great video. May I ask you a question what is the difference between this saw and a gomboy or bigboy silky saw? Thank you
They sell these blades and I'm going to make my own exotic hardwood handles and leather sheath
Keep me posted
Oil your blade to reduce the resin deposited on your blade when cutting.
I love mine. I haven't reviewed it yet but I'm going to. I'll cut on 3 sides if I have the room to move the saw.
I bought the 420mm Sugoi to trim a little weight, but still have enough saw to cut down a rain forest.
Awesome, I need one of these,it'd be good to have to do fast cutting up dead limbs in my yard that I make cleaning brush faster.
Very impressive hand saw!
Looks like a awesome saw! Thanks for the video!
I bought the 420mm Sugoi, which I consider the best choice.
Great saw, thought about buying the zubat, alone with the silky big boy saws,an probably a portable hand axe hatchet, to to have all around tools in the woods an my puukko 140,I believe I'd be ok.
On the planet Saw, Silky's are the ruling class.
great video (as always) .. this is indeed perfect for the camping / car emergency bag... as I kayak camp I will have to carry a folder for many times the river/ creeks are blocked by downed trees ..but maybe this would work since its in my kayak.. Love how easily it did the oak...

Is that the 360 or 420 ?
Checking Amazon,
They only come with XL teeth.
Nice looking, never owned that one, I have the Zubat, Ibuki, Sugoi, Kamisorime, Gomtoro, and now I just got a Tsurugi. Zubat is my fave so far. Looks powerful, I'd rather carry the Zubat backpacking, it's smaller , lighter and cuts 90% as fast as that one.

there are a lot of good saws.
Try a quick undercut (2-3 strokes) before your top cut. The fibers will break of cleaner with no snags and less compression build-up on the blade.
Great review! Looking for a new saw. Checking your site!
GREAT video, I'm going to get my self one
How does this one compare to the silky big boy 2000 folding saw? I have it and it's been a GREAT saw! It does the work of a larger saw, but still compact and lightweight.
for me, i take the f180 for a small saw and this one for a large saw. no need for the in-between.

Living Survival looking forward to the F180 review.
I've got the 2000. Haven't used it yet. Why don't you like it? Too small and flimsy?
@LivingSurvival great review! Glad you like it.
thank you!
Huh. I like that saw. It would make a nice companion to my Pocketboy.
yep it would.
Great saw,gotta have one,THANKS

Awesome review...this would be useful for processing larger trees or branches, but for the money I'll stick to my $20.00 corona.
116 Survival You can't beat that for the price.
PREPAREDMIND101, you can say that again...I was on a job a while ago and saw it and had to have it...then I saw the video you did reviewing it, and I was like, yup, if Chris approves, then it must be good. Hehe

what pack is that? Great review, already have the saw, I got the extra large teeth, but I like that you can swap out the blade.
sabra mono 48.
Where did you get the sweater with the thumb holes? Is it wool?
Lester River Bushcraft
Nice!
its bout 90$ right? i think its great but im poor and a 36 in bow saw can cut pretty good with a hardwood blade on it.ut might dull faster but anither blade is like 12$ only.guess everybody has a fav.i would love a big boy or this sugowaza
I think so.

Thanks
you should look at the Boreal 21.
Great video but we need more details; price, durability, competitive options??
Joel Ussery really is no competitive options other than different sizes. Link has current price.
Every reviewer on UA-camr as soon as brownie saw that just got today it's a great saw okay agree to How Great is it after two or three years of you since I've used how do you as if you were to go cut see a cord of firewood with it what do you still say it's a great song?
Go Japan, but it is funny how much more expensive they are outside of Japan. Half the price when I see them at hardware outdoor stores here in Tokyo.
NICE!
Thx👍🏻
Do a video of the contents in the pack at 1:00.
Nice, but my backpacking saw is Big Boy 2000 :) Go big or go home :)
Its cool but for the size I would rather take a bow saw with a similar blade length. A bow saw would be lighter and normally cost a lot less. My EKA viking has a 20 inch blade, is half the weight and half the cost all in a packable that folds up to a much smaller packable size.
80 dollars is crazy I hope you got it free . Btw Xmas
i bought this one.
amazing
nice nice
This saw an the zubat an silky folding sawa you cant go wrong except for choosing the wrong size, other than that gtrat cutting saws.
Is the Saw of Rambo xd
Beast
Fyi it’s a pull saw...
5:30 he's only drawing on half the blade.
I want that sooooooooooo bad
Pine....
Loved the video, great demos and great info!!! If you ever want to know more about Silkys please check out our videos SILKY Saws Australia.
Hot damn.
cool, but not $80 cool...
Thanks for the video review.
thanks for watching Roy. Have a good holiday.
100$ now..
Depends who you're talking to
i find it exagerated to buy such a professional saw for hiking/camping, these are expensive because they are extra sharp and made for extended professinal use for tree care and pruning works, because it's important for the health of the plants. but if you have enough money why not, they are defenitely worth the money.
who needs a bow saw?
lol.
Are you sure that was oak ? lol
yep, super green red oak.
That saw made it look too easy . Hope all is going ok with you Ben . Great video and thank you sir .
Bruh, you're dressed like an Amazon affiliate link
Say Heah, Thanx You. I'm getting one. Dilly Dilly.,,.p
with this saw, you can leave the axe at home..........
in most cases, yep.
