Does Ed Bolian @vinwiki live in a McMansion then? I would fricken love to have any of these houses with a huge 3+ car garage. People on the internet could make fun of me all they want. I really wouldn't care.
Yes, combined with the fact that people bought these when it looked like houses were going to wildly appreciate forever and the bigger the house you bought, the more money would eventually go into the retirement fund. Now they're up to their necks in debt and the upkeep is going to start hitting hard.
This was one of my favorite (non-car) discussions yet! My wife and I share a common hatred for McMansions, and houses dominated by their garage (your old house excepted), and house "Mullets". My only gripe was throwing in the legacy cobras. I would agree that a lot of replicars are bad (e.g., fiero-based kit cars), but a lot of kit cobras are better than the originals in function, and real cobras are un-attainable or too valuable to drive. My first car was a Datsun 280z back in the early 80s, and I'd love one of those 280z-based Ferrari 250 GTO conversions, especially given the suspension and powertrain upgrades that could be done to probably make it outperform the original. Lastly, I'll bet that in 50 years there will be more 200-plus year old Victorians that survive than McMansions (as a matter of percentage currently existing). McMansions are so much garbage materials and construction methods.
A McMansion on the street behind me went up for sale in Jan 2016 for 4,200,000. It finally sold in Feb 2022 for 1,775,000. Property taxes are > $56,000 a year. No thanks!
I really liked that last McMansion with the theater and all the hideous wall art. If it was in Staten Island NY. I'm certain it would get a great price from a major organized crime boss Capo from someone in the Colombo crime family......it's all in the marketing hahahahhahha......
1:40 Mark in the video.... Honest to God, I almost bought a new-build exactly this design in California back in 2003-2004. It even had a huge Mother-in-Law unit built in the back that was a separate structure. The builder wanted $1.3M for it back then.
ROFL that cat on the table! We’ve seen your old place it definitely was a McMansion but super cool place! To big for the city though honestly but at least it was at a dead end. Observations: New trend could be "Net Zero" cribs, (or Net Zeroish). Cats who can't unload these turkeys, could lean into "Urban Exploration" for profit/exposure. BTW, that feline is a scene thief...
That's interesting the term seems regional - on the west coast, we call them McMansions when they're on a tiny lot and the house covers every possible square foot of it. There's a 25 foot street set back, 5 feet on one side, 10 feet on the other and 2 or 3 story cheap mansion on top - it doesn't need gaudy glue ons - just the 'no yard'. In fact some of those will have windows on the narrow lot side where you can look through several houses.... They've started putting terrible color finishes and stone on the fronts - but the entire house is cheap. Like trailer house cheap.
Michael Jordan's house should be turned into a home for veterans who are homeless or something similar for families in need that served our nation. There should be a staff that can help the veterans get online education, a fresh haircut and grooming and then assistance for job placement if able, Just my two cents.
In Portland, Oregon some years back Scotty Pippin played for the Trailblazers. He purchased a home that did not fit the neighborhood where it was built, and after leaving Portland he tried to sell the home. It took over 4 years to find a buyer. How he came out in dollars and cents I do not know, but that was a perfect example of the wrong house in the wrong place.
There was a house in Edgewood Kentucky that was on a market bridge for $8 million. They knocked it down to $6 million and end up selling for just about 3 1/2 million dollars.
