That said, Travis did look like he was holding back some emotion.

Sam may be "I don't know how to play D&D", but he is an excellent storyteller...
Nott's "he's my boy" speech is one of my favorites.
I liked that everybody was handing Sam 20 d8's to roll the damage. It was a group effort.😢
At first I thought this was something he had planned with Matt, like FCG would go out at some point, and then they'd take him to Aeor or even to Tarry to be rebuilt with a new body, but as it went on and multiple rewatches you can see Matts initial look of utter disbelief, then shock and horror, and then the tears started. It could still happen, but in this moment, this was pure Sam Riegel doing what he does best, creating some of the best CR moments of all time. You can look back on it, when everybody is taking their turns, you can see the gears turning as he's coming up with what he needs to do, it's the same with Scanlan using his 9th level to counterspell, he was just in pure focus mode, looking through everything he had, trying to find anything that would save them.
That counterspell is still the saddest shit I’ve ever seen on any livestream session of dnd. Ever. This is definitely number 2
This was sams moment to fix the counter spell usage in campaign 1, he failed in that one succeeded in this one
With his final Exandrian speech to complete the trifecta. Man really is alone atop the podium of all time tear-inducing moments in Critical Role history, no debate
Yeah, I think Sam realized that they were all going to die here, so he had FCG move away from the party, knowing that Otohan would follow. Then he went all Terminator on her a. :D
There were several times during the last hour of the fight that Sam was texting, some of which appeared to be with Matt. This makes me believe Sam was thinking about the possibility of sacrificing himself early on when he saw how poorly things were going. Does this diminish the impact or validity of his decision? In my mind, absolutely not. It was a clutch move, and very likely the only way to avoid a TPK based on the condition of the rest of the party. Thanks for putting together this edit of the episode.

Another fucking amazing moment by Sam himself. Jesus what he did in C1 was a total soul crushing ball busting emotional rollercoaster. His then great journey in C2, to playing a character that’s a perfect embodiment of both C1 and C2. Scanlans craziness, and notts passion.

Oh no, he was loving every moment of it, Travis thrives on story. You can go back and check older episodes and he's like a kid at story time. But you can guarentee he was emotional too, I think he was just enjoying what was happening too much for it to show.
It was both. Excited for a great story moment, and touched by the emotional weight of the scene.
I noticed the same. Travis may not be as sensitive as Matt or Liam, but he is not made of just goofing around.

I'm not sure if anyone else saw this but FCGs arc was complete by this, they started as a robot who was a stressed out killing robot who killed all of his friends and ended as a stressed out killing robot who saved all of his friends.

Jimmy Doohan on the pipes is always a steak to the heart. The deepfake was a cast iron skillet to the head though.
First, what Sam says about realizing for the first time that despite being made of metal and wires that he is alive and it's because of the connections he's made with the rest of Bell's Hells, that he gladly makes this sacrifice to save their lives, is beautiful. I make a point to not get attached to my TTRPG characters. They're really just numbers on paper but, damn it, Sam! These moments in CR get me all teary eyed. Second, FCG went out like a f***ing boss! Otohan is toast. Sam Riegel for the win, baby (again)!

Also, This was against Thule. Matt created a NEARLY UNSTOPPABLE enemy that needed something MASSIVE to get rid of her. This...was it. Sam is good at the DnD.

That's so dumb. Campaign 3 hasn't been my cup of tea, but telling Matt he should have TPK'd them is uncalled for
@carlycchapman Exactly, there is nothing wrong with this campaign not being someone's cup of tea. There were a couple of times when I was starting to lose interest, but I continued on. Now I can't wait for next week's episode.

And same as you guys, I stopped watching after 50ish came out and I came back around 70? Then stopped again and came back at 85.
Ya.. this though saved the campaign. For fucking once the stakes are there. In each campaign there was moments that made them get their shit together. This is probably the 1 or few in C3. But it was absolutely needed

i like that there is a rule (altho not 100% sure if it is a rule lol) that genuine self sacrifice like this will bypass any damage resistances
I believe it's a rule called "Blaze of Glory" in their new Daggerheart game system. Choosing to go out like this automatically crits on the character's final action. It's not a D&D thing, officially, but even if the math didn't work out under 5e rules, Matt exercised his DM's prerogative to pay off Sam's choice with narrative justice in the spirit of the Blaze of Glory rule, which was clearly where this moment with FCG needed to go.

Sam isnt allowed to give speeches anymore. New rule. Sam isnt even allowed to speak anymore outside of ads. He can now only communicate via his flask. I will not allow a 4th sam character to break me.

I love how they all reminded him earlier that as the cleric he should be healing, because it wasn’t worth doing damage unless it would take her out. And he waited until there was no other option, before deciding to deal damage. It worked.

That face swap is pretty legit.
Even speaking from my perspective, as someone who isn't really a huge fan of this season while also vehemently disagreeing with the idea that D&D "needs" character death to be interesting, this was just amazingly beautiful. I think using character death as a crutch, in any form of writing, is just being a lazy writer, but Mollymauk's and FCG's deaths show how to do it right, and to lend meaning to your story. Also, crucially, Sam willingly decided to do this, and to end his character arc this way - no random chance, no bad luck, just a willing decision to go out in the most meaningful way possible for the character.
wonder if they can quest with their season 1 counterparts to bring him back like they did marisha... or is that just wife privilage?
I just finished watching the episode and I was really sure that this was the end of the campaign. What an interesting turn of events and I‘m so excited to see what new character Liam will create for Sam

In my opinion, the greatest character in Bells Hells (or even all of Critical Role).
I think Sam understood that there was no winning this fight. Once Otohan "reset" and healed up, they were all going to die. FCG (as well as the others) were all dead anyway, so I bet he thought "Might as well try to take her with me."
I don't want to be too critical of Matt, because these encounters are usually incredibly well balanced, but I think he missed a bit with this one. Letting Otohan both have an AC of 25, be resistant to all damage, have her action surges (plural) back, heal over 60 hit points, be determined to kill them all AND be too fast to run away from... in sum it made the fight unsurvivable.

I have seen a couple different videos today where they point out that the amount of damage was less than the hit points needed for her death but if you think about it that was just blast damage there was shrapnel I'm sure his Harpoon and saw blade went somewhere I think for not having any stats ready this was well done kudos to Sam and Matt good job Critical Role.... I wonder if Sam can bring his dagger heart Giant to Exandria
It was only less if she resisted it right? But this was Heart damage, un-resistable.
My headcanon is that it was 20d8 + 20, though I didn't run the numbers maybe that's still not enough. It could also be that it did a damage type she couldn't resist. Who knows, maybe she was vulnerable to love damage.
Not really, Matt has been known to fudge the rules for the players if it would be thematically appropriate. Here, much like the Wrath of Kahn clip, Matt realized that this was appropriate and after confirming that Sam knew what he was doing gave the party the victory. Now the question has become how will the party respond because when Sam pulled this they all broke character hard when they realized what Sam’s plan was.

I’ll say it, you all are thinking it…the campaign needed this. This is real motivation for both the characters and players. This is an impactful moment that should have happened long ago.
Well, I guess even the crappiest, most unappealing of D&D campaigns can still have its amazing moments.
