I can speak Turkish and English just fine cuz I went to both schools in turkey and America and I'm only 13 BAHAOJDFKSF so it's funny seeing them having an accent or saying it wrong but they did a very good job!!❤❤ translation: Benim için çok komik çünkü tüm ailem Türk ama Amerika'da doğan tek kişi benim, bu yüzden iki dilde aksanım yok xD. I visited Turkey in 2015 , and went to Izmir and Selcuk-Ephesus , then up to Canakkale by coach and then back to Izmir. From my experience , English isn't spoken widely in this part of Turkey (barring the tourist driven Selcuk-Ephesus ) , which led to some very awkward moments with hotel workers, restaurant staff , airport staff , coach drivers , tourist info workers , the list goes on . And , unlike in some countries where the young have a better grasp of English than older people, the ages of these people didn't have any bearing on their English skills. Be they young or old , they generally didn't speak English . But that's just part of the adventure . I am the visitor in their country after all, and these aren't complaints. I am guessing learning English isn't a priority for most Turks unless they work in the touristy south west or Istanbul?
that’s not necessarily true. i am turkish but i live in america and visit every summer. the newer generations know turkish sooo well. for example, my friends. i’m not just saying this but they know everything, even the slang used. schools pressure a looooot and their foreign language needs are very pressured. u did not visit the main touristic spots, more local places. that why no one knew english not very rich places either. if you were to visit istanbul(a main city) majority of people on the street know english and there are even advertisements and signs in english due to the high rate of tourists.
You rarely come across people who can speak English except in tourist-intensive places. Not only Izmir. It is valid for all Anatolian cities. But young people know more than the olders.
U just didn't come across , almost everyone learns English, there are a lot of job as well like English teaching, English language and literature, tourist guide ...
If you are a small nation, English is a must, but Turkiye is 85 million with long history, we have nearly everything enough in Turkish. I am an engineer, even engineers can work with little knowledge of English.
I tried learning turkish as a native English speaker, Turkish is kicking my butt, it's like having buttered toast your whole life and switching to cinnamon toast, have to forget what you know 😅
That's exactly how it goes when we learn English as Turkish people 😂 but God bless you man hopefully you will enjoy it and lastly I want to say Turkish people find accents attractive just so you know 😉
