My grandfather and grandmother both worked for NASA at that time. My Grandfather was an electrician that worked on the plane that Chuck flew. This gives me a great since of pride in his work and his life.
Dozens of pilots died trying to fly faster than the speed of sound. We will never know all their names. The only reason we know Chuck Yeager is he was the first one that lived.
Google George Welch; He was first by 2 weeks in an F86 Sabre. NASA was embarrassed that North American Aviation had beaten them in an actual production aircraft and not a test plane that they refused to acknowledge Georges flight even though it was carried out on the same test site and the same recording equipment ( owned by NASA ). Hate when politics gets in the way of truth. NASA poured bucket loads on tax payers money into the project so it would not have looked good to upstaged by a rival company..
I remember being at the Edwards AFB Airshow in 87'. Yeager was still flying then and to commemorate the event he did a mach-1 low altitude flyby in an F4. I can still vividly remember that sonic boom. Pure class.
The forward visibility, especially while landing must not have been as excellent as the speed record that was established in 1947... These guys that flew those things with wings clearly had steel nerves....
Unless we find some other barrier between sound and light, Chuck Yeager can say he is the first person to break the highest attainable speed barrier. No other human on the planet can say they were the first to break this barrier other than him.
So sad to hear about the recent passing of Charles "Chuck" Yeager, the first pilot to fly supersonic. He has made immeasurable contributions to aviation and will be missed.
Godspeed General Yeager. Our nation mourns your passing but rests knowing that you're now flying higher than ever before. 🇺🇸 ""Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence. Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. "Up, up the long delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace, where never lark, or even eagle, flew; and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God"
When I was 12, Gen. Yeager did an A/C Delco commercial... His cavalier attitude about aviation sealed the deal to be a wrench in the Naval Aviation side of the military... RIP General...
Wonder how Chuck felt when he did that. Must've been priceless. Sort of in the league of people like Yuri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong when it comes to danger and balls.
Enjoy your rest now , the world is a lesser place without you, thank you for all of your efforts in the expansion of the human endeavors is science with your courage, curiosity and Honor.. We salute you sir..
It hasn't changed actually, what you hear in old recordings is called the transatlantic accent, it is a learnt pronunciation of words. it was thought to help make old, rudimentary recordings more easily understood, and combat distortion in old recording equipment.
When the sound barrier is broken there is an explosion of sound Perhaps when the light barrier is broken there will be an explosion of light. Perhaps one day we'll get there
Traveling faster than light would mean you are seeing nothing or something that is old because the light hasnt reached your eyes enough to see whats going on, but thats just a guess so who really knows.
@@BurnttBurrito you will see stuff but it will be broken images. Imagine light as particles and as you run through, your eyes collect the particles. Hence, you will see flashes of light but never a full picture since light ray travel in all direction.
