When you're fairly new to picking and come across spool pins, it's one of those "AHA! Now I understand" moments which makes the open much more rewarding. They're still tough for me as when there's more than one you tend to drop a set pin trying to get the spool and it can happen more than once as you encounter each spool pin. Haven't tried the 150 but it's now on the bucket list. As always you have a way of explaining things so well that anyone can follow along 👍👍

There are no stupid questions. Only stupid people who are afraid to ask questions and then go and mess stuff up lol. You mark where the dips are. That's where the point of the pins actually lay when the key is in the lock.
Either something is wonky with my 150, or ML makes some of them as 4 pin variants, which mine seems to be. Maybe there was a factory screw up. But that would explain the large space in my 150 between lock face and the 'first' pin. There's enough room for another pin there, and there seems in fact to be a chamber even! But no pin that I see. If I slowly rake along the top from the rear and count, I definitely count just 4. At least that front space makes for a great grip with the TOK wrench, no popping out like they do with the 140 series. In any case, it's one of my absolute favorite locks to pick if not my #1 favorite, the spools are so much fun and its a stupid easy open, as the last pin is a zero lift (confirmed with key and decoder); so it's pins 1, 2, 3, (all spools) aaand open. A 3 pin lock lol I think I need to buy another one just to check that first pin. Update: I ordered a new 150 from Amazon last night and got it today. This new one is most definitely 5 pin. Weird!! My old one I bought in November of 2023 so it's not even that old. Also has fewer spools, but not quite as easy or fun to open as it actually has good bitting for once.
That's so weird. Although it doesn't surprise me seeing that Masterlock doesn't make things the best quality. But that sucks that it only had 4 pins. Glad you got a new one that is all there and was a fun one to pick for you. I really enjoy spool pins myself, they are some of my favorite pins to pick!
Hi, thank you for the video. I am having trouble overcoming the Whac-A-Mole issue. It seems like when I use a short and medium hook, I'm just chasing false sets. What's your best advice to overcome this and successfully achieve an open. Thank you. Perhaps it's just my specific lock biting...?
Thank you for watching! This was a surprisingly tough lock to pick and I was just investigating the Master 570 and have found that the pin stacks of that lock are not balanced and that particular lock doesn't contain any spool pins. I'm beginning to suspect that some of the drivers in this 150 may fall beneath the shear line too. So even though there may be some spool pins in this lock, you could be on a spring and not a driver pin at all. I'm not 100 percent sure of this though. But if that is the case you will find that some of the pins don't want to move when you are in a false set. The best thing to do is to manually counter rotate the tension on this lock until you can get the pin to set. If you are just playing wack a mole though, it may just be that you aren't getting the binding order right and are setting some pins too early, causing them to fall when you set the 'correct' pin. To be honest, if you aren't getting this one open soon I would just choose a different brass body lock to pick. I found this one to be so poorly made that it was super annoying to pick and I think it would be very difficult for a newer picker to contend with. I'd say to practice and learn on a couple other better made brass body locks then come back to this one later. It really is a jerk of a lock!
Great video Sis. well explained and you showed why this lock can be a pain to pick for all levels of pickers. Cheers

This helped me figure out what I’m doing wrong, I can’t wait to get home and try marking a pick and see if that helps
I'm glad this is helpful to you. What are you using currently? Are you located in the US?

Don't laugh but when I am marking where the pins are, do I mark where the bumps are, or the dips?
