I laughed so hard at the epidendrum hybrid rose. It looks so cartoony. Then you're like I can't even enjoy when it blooms it's grown so tall. It's touching the ceiling 👏😮

This is exactly what I do with mine. I use slotted Terra cotta pots, and sit them in glad Pyrex bowls with a 1-2" water resoivior. The Terra cotta draws the water up around the roots and the potting medium grabs it from there. The plant has lots of water and humid air.

Agreed, the miracle grow mix was purchased only once here.

I think my oncidium may be oncidium "twinkle" as it was unnamed in store but looks identical to yours. Seeing yours made me smile as mine is about to bloom like crazy for me and I'm sooo excited to see all of the adorable little blooms 😊

I think your problem with semi-hydro is not the semi-hydro per se, but the bog that has developed in your vases. When the Leca is kept clean, the roots have no problem breathing.
To avoid algae formation, simply don't let the light shine on the Leca. Algae cannot live in the dark.
My entire orchid collection, almost a hundred plants, is in semi-hydro. I use deli containers, two per plant. One inside the other. The inner one has holes at the bottom (not at the side, so when I flush, dirt and stuff flush out completely). The outer container doesn't have any holes and it is the one that holds the water in.
I made DIY removable masks, one for each outer container. They are made of nice looking thick paper that prevents the light from reaching the media and developing algae. My Leca is always as clean as the first day of repotting.
To prevent algae from colonizing the top layer of the Leca, I fill the last half inch with river stones. This also solves the problem of the dry top layer.
Your other problem is repotting. You wait too long. Plants should not be allowed to grow outside of their pots. Newer roots are the most important, and yours are in the air, so they cannot feed nor hydrate properly, while the old roots fade in the bog. That's why your plants are showing signs of stress. Semi-hydro done properly is one of the best. I'd never change back to bark!

Love your collection! How can you manage a vacation from your orchids? I would be hard pressed to trust anyone to tend to them. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting to see how your slipper orchids are doing and what you are changing. We just did a full blown general care on slipper orchids and all the varieties of media you mentioned were represented. My After Dark is in spike, a little earlier this time around than last time... orchids just do what they 'feel' like and we scratch our heads... gotta love this hobby! Never underestimate the power of a beautiful big white phal 😍 mom's keiki gonna bloom... that is great news!!

Thank you thank you thank you. I’ve been watching your channel for a while and I’ve always wondered about the condition of your media 🥴. Although you have beautiful blooms , I worried about the health of your Orchids. This should be very interesting. 💛💜

I hope you have good success with the oncidium mix. I’m thinking about switching to it myself. What size bag I’d you get? I just lost a flower spike on one of my oncidiums because it got stuck due to how sticky the plant is. 😔

I don't understand how you grow your psychopsis lol. All of the roots rotted on mine. Ok, whatever maybe it was just too wet for too long who knows. So it had a new growth and I just unpotted it and just let it sit with no media to let the roots grow out and they still started to turn black after about an inch long. I would just mist it a few times a day ughhhh idk!

It looks to me like you're. Plants and Simi hydro just needed larger containers. And some non wicking pebbles on top to keep the moisture in.
I have started transitioning my collection to Simi hydro. And then found your videos which is making me second guess myself. I guess well see!

You think it's bad to say the twinkle fragrance is not your favourite, to me it smells like lemon and shrimp (and not in a good way)!
