Fun Fact: The ROM version of Gradius keeps the Bubble System countdown of the original version. The only difference Is that in the ROM version the countdown is faster than the original Bubble System version (Also the entire game is faster in the ROM version).
The colours on this are very washed out. I actually got banned from playing this in my local arcade as I could loop it several times on one credit! Also the laser works better if you hold the fire button down (unless you're using auto-fire).
You were banned because you played too well!? That's the retro equivalent of being called a hacker and getting reported in an online game because you beat everyone
I'd love to have been there. -sorry sir you've been playing too long. You must choose another game. --ok then refund my quarter because I wasn't even close to being finished.
Brightness or gain is too high in the emulator, hence the washed out look. On a real Nemesis/Gradius arcade PCB with the brightness level set correctly, the game looks much better. Also, nice job getting banned from the game! I saw a dude loop Salamander six times or more on a credit when I took a trip to Tokyo a few years ago. Would walk off, come back, score kept going up, even an hour or two later.
The home versions, the PC Engine, and the Gradius Deluxe Packs on PS1, Saturn, and Windows, as well as Gradius Portable/Collection added ending credits to the game.
Sadly it is one of the weaker ports. The best goes to the Gradius Deluxe Pack on PS1, Saturn, and Windows, Gradius Collection PSP, and the PC Engine ports. It's still decent, but so hard to go back to once you own better versions of it, ports that are pretty much arcade perfect.
You're best off if you can make it to the boss with lasers and a couple of option cannons, hiding to the far left just a little higher than the volcano, making sure that your option cannons are well spread-out, and just keep blasting. If you've lost lives beforehand and didn't have enough power-ups to get the laser or option cannons, your better bet is to stay near the top in the middle, shoot as many rocks as you can that come out of the volcano on the right, and otherwise keep dodging the rocks that come out of both.
I don't know if PCB's need warming up per se. I think if anything maybe the monitor needed sometime to heat up? Otherwise it's probably just a fancy boot sequence...
akaTheWilyFox Nope, here is a completely different reason of it. This screen is typical for arcade system "Bubble System". When you turn on it, it writes on the boot screen "wait while system heating up", because the BM needs to be heated up to between 30-40 degrees to work properly (Wikipedia).
+DANA Y I love Gradius, but the arcade originals have fairly bad game design, as in there's lots of unfair shit in them. I'm not talking shit about Konami, that's just how arcade games tend to go because in order to make the most money from your arcade game, you have to find the best balance between killing the player OFTEN, so he has to put in more money to continue, and fun, so the player actually wants to continue.
+DANA Y Take Gradius Syndrome for example. You collect 34 powerups or so to get to full power, and then you die, and you might have ONE when you respawn. And the level is designed for you to be at full power. Many times it is LITERALLY impossible to continue because you can't get your powerups back. Sometimes the checkpoints (like in Gradius II) are placed right in the middle of a death trap with tiles breaking from the walls and flying at you from every conceivable direction you could go. Or the way the first game gives you a forward shield, and as soon as you get it, almost all the enemies fire at you when they hit the LEFT side of the screen. Or the last stage of any Gradius arcade game where there are unexpected walls, mook spawners that you can't reach in a claustrophobic area, bullet hell that you HAVE to take a hit to get through with your massive hitbox, etc.
+DANA Y Console Gradius games were typically MUCH better games as far as fairness and fun goes. They're hard, but there's always a way to either dodge or memorize every obstacle. The only unfair thing left is Gradius Syndrome, but the checkpoints are nicer and it's possible to continue more often than in arcades...
+DANA Y Well, I can tell you one thing: give the games "Gun Nac" for the NES and "Space Megaforce" & "R-Type 3" for the SNES a try, and I think you will agree that those games do not need to rely on "nostalgia" at all, because they are freaking amazing. They are so well made and so sophisticated and addictive that they would be just as fun to play in 100 years as well. And if you really want a truly insane NES shmup, then check out "Summer Carnival '92: Recca" for the Famicom. That game is so bloody insane and demanding that I guarantee that you will get tons of Game Overs to even finish the first stage. =D
If there is one thing that i hate about this series are those Moai. I swear if you ever lost any lives and having to start from the checkpoint of the stage, you are utterly fucked! Those Moai head thing will fire their bullets at you relentlessly, not giving you any time to breath. And with your ship being slow af, your chances of survival are lower. The Moai stage in each games is where i got the most game over and the frustration is really pain. Multiple occasions where i rage quit due to this stage, i hate those Moai!!!
Same here, if only Scramble (if counted), Gradius II, Salamander and this were removed on Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection and replaced with classics like Frogger. Also, Haunted Castle would've been on a Castlevania collection instead.
This is very tame compared to the version that is available on Konami arcade classics for the xbox 1 x. Said version is insanely fast compared to this.
Hi, thanks for the longplay ! Good memories ;) Just one thing, this version has odd colors and ending, except for the arcade boot this is very close to the NES version. I double checked with other longplays available on UA-cam. Keep Up !
Da fuck is this??? This is like NES Gradius Beta, like the prototype before several stages of testing before the official NES release. Fascinating though. It's like an incomplete version of the final game or something. I feel like I'm trippin out when I watch this lol.
If the whoever was controlling the boss ship near the nine minute mark was smart they should have stayed right in from the player's ship so the attack would have been unavoidable.
AfaIk it was called Nemesis in the UK. In fact when Gradius II came out I didn't even know that it was the sequel. I thought that it was another game that copied a lot of the features of the original.

Fun Fact: The ROM version of Gradius keeps the Bubble System countdown of the original version. The only difference Is that in the ROM version the countdown is faster than the original Bubble System version (Also the entire game is faster in the ROM version).
