      Thanks for the compliment Liz. By the way, since making this video I’ve determined that this approach can be hit or miss. When in doubt, solder the bezel in place. 😀

    This brought me back to my days in dental school (over 40 years ago). We were taught to make gold crowns the same way using many of the exact same tools and materials including the nylon stocking. Thanks, Prof John. You are a better teacher than most of my professors in dental school were.

    Unfortunately no, I probably cannot cast a bezel cup like so. But if you keep teaching like this, soon comes the time when I can.

    Very cool! I never knew anything about the actual process of lost wax casting, so this series has been very informative.
    If you are only going to make one or two pieces, is there really any major advantage to casting it as opposed to just making it out of your metal to start with? Assuming one has the tools, of course.
    And since the wax is burned off in the casting process, how *do* they make multiples? They have to make some sort of mold from the wax first, I assume? That would seem easy enough with something simple like this bezel cup, but not so much so with something more complex and delicate like that fabulous spiky pendant you did.

    Great Tutorial! Will thinner bezel sheet (24 gauge, for example) work well for the casting process?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  2 роки тому

      A thinner bezel might work if you use a vacuum casting method. But, I must warn you that cast bezels don’t bend easily. And, there is always a chance that porosity can ruin the bezel if not the whole piece. Good luck with your creative pursuits. Thanks for watching! 😀

    Hi there, thanks for the great video. Could you please explain more in-depth the last polishing step with orange oil, I don´t seem to be able to find such a product or even the wax cleaner you mentioned. Thank you!

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  3 роки тому

      The final polishing step helps to ensure that you don’t end up with a casting that has deep scratches on it. If you don’t have access to the products that I mentioned, try substituting them with diluted dish detergent. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse your wax before you invest it. You don’t want to provoke unnecessary bubbles in the casting process. 😀

      @@OnlineJewelryAcademy Oh thanks for the response, about the orange oil, is it an essential oil, or is it oil that´s just called orange oil? Is it a wood polish? haha I´m doing a little research, thanks for the tip, I´ll try the dish detergent for my next piece! And for the content, great videos!!

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  3 роки тому

      @@mafe9551 Yes, it is a wood polish or cleaner. It works because it has a mild solvent effect on the wax. 😀

    Thanks for the video. Bit hard to judge the shrinkage of the bezel!!! Please make more wax carving videos 😀

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  6 років тому

      The most accurate way to predict the shrinkage of a model is to develop the model in a CAD program. Otherwise you just have to leave the bezel a tine bit loose. More wax videos are coming.

      thanks for replying. CAD too high tech for me ☺️ I guess it's trial & error. Just a bit expensive to cast if it doesn't fit. I'll try it though. Cheers!

    Hi from Argentina! how you mesure the base that goes under the stone? I mean, how tall or thin it has to be so when you cast is not to tall or thin. Thank you so much! Paola from Buena Plata

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Paola, Commercially produced bezel wire is 28 gauge thick or 0.32mm. Here's a link to a chart to help you with gauge thickness: www.firemountaingems.com/resources/encyclobeadia/charts/6404
      The bezel can be thicker. But, if you make it out of sterling silver it will be harder to bend over the stone. The height of the bezel needs to be slightly taller than the height at which the curved top of the stone starts to curve toward the apex of the stone. If you're still confused. I recommend that you consult with your caster and a professional stone setter. Good luck! 🍀

    What do you use as a cutting board for your pink sheet wax?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy

      Generally, I use a piece of plexiglass. But, if I heat my cutting tool, I’ll switch to a metal surface. 🙂

    Do you have to worry about shrinkage if you are using this to make a model for sand casting? Or is it only in investment casting? Also how much do you have to make extra for shrinkage if you are making for a specific stone? I’m new to casting and this is something I worry about. Thanks for the videos, they are so helpful and the only ones I’ve found that seem to “connect the dots” so to speak.

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy

      Hi Kay,
      I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. Thanks for watching!
      Generally speaking, shrinkage in investment casting is about 2%. It’s great that you’re using wax models to make sand castings. But this technique is a little tricky. I recommend that you fabricate your bezel cup and solder it to your casting. 😀

    • @Tinybadger
      @Tinybadger 2 роки тому

      @@OnlineJewelryAcademy thanks so much for responding!! Sorry I’m not quite sure what you mean? Would you mind explaining that a bit more? Is it not possible to use wax models for sand casting or do I need to it a different way? Thanks so much!

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  2 роки тому +1

      @@Tinybadger Yes, you can use wax models in conjunction with Delft Clay casting. The wax models are removed from the clay to create a void prior to casting. The OJA has a video on Delft Clay casting.

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy

      You might be able to use some of the wax that you used to make the bezel. The blue inlay and perfect purple are recommended because they will flow easier into the cracks. Good luck!

    Very good video did know about the orange oil, my partner does not wear knee high's so I will have to go and cut the legs off
    her pantyhose

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  6 років тому +1

      LOL! Or, you could just visit the dollar store and buy a pair. The knee high hose are great because they have a variety of surface textures that allow you to really polish a piece. The orange oil will soften the wax a bit. So, don't be too aggressive with your rubbing. Glad you enjoyed the video.

    Why did you decide to use 22g wax sheet to make bezel instead of carving it from blue wax?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  5 років тому

      I used the 22 ga sheet wax to ensure that I had an even thickness to the oval bezel. You could create a round bezel from blue wax on a lathe.
