    The older AF-S has 3 big advantages:
    1. It is parfocal meaning that if you need to zoom in and out to capture the action (sports, airshows, birds in flight) it doesn't have to refocus when you zoom in or out.
    2. Almost no focus breathing. It is a true 300mm up close. The AF-P DX VR is not and you will lose a lot of zoom for up close subjects in comparison to the older lens..
    3. Compatible with more cameras. The new lens won't work at all on older bodies.
    The newer lens also seems to have more CA in some situations. But the newer lens focuses faster so long as you don't have to zoom while focusing.
    There are actually 2 versions of the AF-P DX lens - one without image stabilization. Make sure if you get the AF-P it is the AF-P VR. In 2018 you'd be crazy to try to skimp and get a non-stabilized lens.

      Yeah, it seems like Nikon is really pushing the non-VR version of the AF-P with their DX cameras. I can’t imagine wanting a long zoom without VR, and I think many new customers will find themselves frustrated and then realize they need to drop another $500-600 for the VR.

    • @gyozakeynsianism
      @gyozakeynsianism 3 роки тому

      I can confirm that the AF-S version seems to be parfocal. I don't recall the focus breathing performance. However, the AF-P (FF) version has almost instant, almost silent AF, which I think is more important for video. The AF-S version, not so much.

      SOLD! got myself an AF-S for a steal ($100 in mint condition, FX ) instead of a much more expensive AF-P. I love parfocal lenses :)

      Hi, the problem is that there are 2 AFS lenses, no ? I believe there is an old 70-300 f/4.5- 5.6 VR and another more recent one which is 4.5 to 6.3 but I believe don't have VR.
      Would you know which one is the better of the 2 for image quality (sharpness/contrast) ?
      Thank you for any insight...

    I've owned and used both of these lenses, on my old Nikon D300, and extensively, on my Nikon D7200 and D7500 DX DSLR bodies.
    The newer AF-P E VR FX zoom lens just simply stomps the older AF-S G VR FX zoom lens.
    The newer AF-P E VR FX zoom lens is lighter in weight, focuses faster, has better VR, and is much sharper than the older AF-S G VR FX zoom lens, especially from 200mm to 300mm.
    That's all that needs to be said.
    If you have a compatible DX and/or FX DSLR body, buy the newer AF-P E VR FX zoom lens.
    You'll be very glad that you did.
    Good things! 👍

    I have the the Af-s 70-300mm vr-ed FX lens mounted on my Nikon D90, I love the ability that shooting on a DX camera boosts the range to 450mm, I've taken shots that are totally amazing, Not being a professional, but some shots look so well focused and clear and colourful my friends always ask for blowups for their living rooms....lol Great Lens, so glad i picked it over a cheaper lens.

      450mm yeah but still DX so half iso performance. Means that if you use the lens under 200mm the fx version will blow up the dx and also remember that the fx version has way more bokeh

    I own the DX model of the AF-P 70-300 VR and it's a fantastic lens for the price. The autofocus is not only quiet but it's fast! Images are sharp and contrasty. I've taken some of my best pics with this lens. If the reader has a DX camera, I'd totally recommend it.

    hi, I have both camera's. I will sell my AF-s model. The af-p is faster, but more important the af-p is espacially from 200-300 mm. much sharper. It is really one of the best Nikkor lenses i have used. It is at least as sharp as the 70-200 2,8 VR. It works really well on the z50 with the Ftz (II) adapter. The af on both the af-s and af-p is very accurate, i never miss a shot, de af-p is just faster.

    i got to spend sometime with the 70-300 af-p dx lens with my d5200. things i didnt like plastic mount, f6.3 at 300mm.
    things i liked the autofocus was definitely lot quieter, im not sure if it was quicker as i dont have another long zoom lens to compare with. what took me by surprise was the vr i was able to get usable image at 1/10th of a second.
    another thing that surprised me was video as Matt said its not going to be as good as a dual pixel af system. however the P lens makes it possible to shoot in af mode for video even though my camera doesn't take full advantage of the P lens. in my opinion its worth going for the P lens its that much better than the Af-S lens for video.
    the absence of vr on-off switch might be a deal breaker for some

    I just upgraded from the old AF-S version to the new FX AF-P version. The old version was very sharp up to 200mm, but could be frustratingly soft beyond that. The AF was actually pretty fast, but nothing beats AF-P for speed (and also silence). The AF-P also had that electronic aperture. This makes the FX AF-P much better for any action (AF is better) but also for video (AF much faster, AF and aperture silent). Also, the ergonomics: while both lenses are plastic consumer lenses, the old AF-S felt cheaper, and the zoom ring felt terrible (all kinds of uneven stiction). The AF-P's zoom ring feels great, and the MF ring feels even better (thanks partially to that electronic pulse stepper AF). Finally Nikon brought their lenses into the 21st century!
    Despite having a D7500, I didn't bother with the DX versions of the lens. They felt cheap, the mount was plastic, there are no switches for VR or AF, and the MF ring is on the wrong end of the lens. I don't know if the sharpness differences would have been visible, but the MTF charts made the FX look excellent for just about anything. US$600 well spent - and a bargain.

      @@mikescuba1 Thanks for asking. The AF-P is significantly sharper beyond 200mm and I'd say somewhat sharper and more contrast-y under 200mm. The AF is much faster so that should also help your hit rate. I don't notice any difference in the quality of the VR. Out of focus rendering is maybe slightly worse in the P. Hope that helps! The P is a great buy.

      @gyozakeynsianism 2 роки тому +1

      @@PokzyThose two are the ones I was considering (the 70-200 f/4 and the AF-P 70-300). The AF-P 70-300 has the faster AF (the P represents a modern stepper motor for AF), but (as you say) the 70-200 f/4 is sharper, and it's also better built. For fast action with intense AF needs, I'd still take the AF-P due to the faster focus. Also, I don't need the extra brightness at f/4, the AF-P is still very sharp, and the AF-P is half the price of the 70-200 and lighter too. I also use it at 300mm often. But if you don't need 300mm, want a brighter lens and want better build quality, the f/4 might be for you.

    I was kind of looking for the answer to the question you brought up. Other than FX compatibility, are there substantial quality differences between the FX and DX versions? I have the slightly older 55-300mm DX AF-S, and it is ok but is a little slow to focus at times and has a reputation for being a little soft above 200mm. Would the 70-300mm FX AF-S give me improvements in those areas? As for the S vs. P question, I am a still photo guy, and prefer a wider compatibility between lenses and bodies, so give me S over P.

    I would like to tell you that we can use the middle range lens the Nikkor AF-P 70-300 ED VR 3.5 TO 6.5 F... Can be used on the FX Camera bodies by using the crop sensor option in fx bodies... There will be a FN button you will need to click that and with it u will need to see through the view finder where u will see the sensor getting cropped... The lens works in 1.2x crop sensor which is the secondary sensor setting and the third is the dx crop sensor which is the third crop sensor... Note that if u use this lens on FX body u will need to crop the sensor or u will get the vignetting on photos... 1.2x and dx crop. Also note that i have a nikon D750 so I'm telling my camera settings however probably the D750 posses the same settings of all nikon cameras FX bodies... Video mode is awesome u may not need to crop the sensor in video mode... There will be 0% vignetting... If any more questions please reply on this same comment below...🙏

    Ok for me the older AF-S VR is much more desirable for stills, with one caveat.
    + AF-S is f/5.6 @300, not 6.3 like the AF-P.
    + AF-S has wider camera compatibility. Will work on all DX and FX cameras released in the last decade or more.
    AF-S has an external physical VR switch on the lens. VERY important: Only the newest cameras released 2017 and later have the ability to toggle VR on and off in the camera menu for the AF-P. On older bodies VR is always on whether you like it or not for the AF-P
    - Softer between 200-300 if you don't stop down to f/8. Not terrible but it is noticable.
    - AF-S motor has been known to fail on this model, and the fix is too expensive so it goes in the bin and you buy a new one if this happens out of warranty. This is the caveat.
    Honestly stepper motor or not, I think Nikon's gone backwards here.

    The AF-P has no switch (VR ON/OFF and M-M/A have to be accessed from camera menu system), works only on newer cameras released after 2013 (some D5500, D5300 or D3300 will need the latest firmware installed), the only advantage it has is the silent stepper motor - a great advantage in video. It is not optically superior to the AF-S version. The AF-S version works on most models, but focuses noisily in video mode.

      If you are very close to small birds, they may hear the autofocussing motor of the AF-P 70-300 FX VR. It is quieter but small birds close up were skittish yet a hawk was not. I too broke my AF-S 70-300 mm lens that I also loved. I ended up getting the full frame AF-P. but I also had to get a compatible camera so got a D500. The FX lens works great on the DX D500 camera. I have taken superb small-bird photos. The FX AF-P has decided quality advantages over the DX version. Most bird photographers are not so close to the bird that the almost imperceptible auto focus noise would be a problem. The FX lens has a manual focus ring to override the autofocus. If you haven't already got the FX lens, I'd do it. That's exactly the lens/camera combination I have and I love it.

    Hi, i have a Nikon D3500 and wanted to get this lens (AF-P 70-300mm t/4.5-5.6E ED VR Lens ) its not DX so would that matter.

      It'll work fine! I have this lens and use it on my D7500. It's great - sharp and the AF is super fast. However, you may be perfectly satisfied with the DX AF-P 70-300 VR, which is cheaper.

    My D5600 came with the 70-300 non VR....how's this quality of the 70-300 VR compared to it?..is it worth selling my non VR to get it?

      Depends if you use a tripod stand when using your lens and how much you shake while using it without it. VR helps with shaking and will notice better quality but not by tons. It all depends how much you shake while taking your photos lol

      Unless you are using a tripod or maintaining very high shutter speeds, the VR is very important in a lens this long. If you are taking sports photos during the day, it is probably bright enough to maintain shutter speeds over 1/500, which is best for sports anyway. If, for some reason, you needed to use a somewhat slower shutter, get the VR.

    Is this af-p lens compatible with niKon d5100?

    • @matthewkeisling2776
      @matthewkeisling2776 4 роки тому

      No. For a D5100 you need AF-S. The AF-P system is pretty new and only works with newer generations of camera bodies.

    It would be nice if you let us see some of your photos. Many times you say, "I've used this lens in the past", but show us some of your photos taken with the lens you are critiquing. I question of you are even a good photographer, the proof is in the pudding.

    • @TheCatnipCinema
      @TheCatnipCinema 5 років тому

      Not really. They're both slow lenses. Honestly are awful in low light except if the subject is unmoving and the camera is on a tripod.

    Nikons autofocus is great and smooth, you just use the wrong settings. Af-f wide, shutter mode. When you actually record, with a af-p lens, its dead quiet

    • @matthewkeisling2776
      @matthewkeisling2776 4 роки тому +2

      Alfred Ho you may already have the answer by now, but here I go anyway. The AF-S is a focusing system which works with pretty much any Nikon DSLR ever made. The AF-P lens is a new system, and will work only with bodies introduces after 2015. There is at least one exception,
      in the D7200, which can have the firmware updated to work with AF-P.
