Me (at the start of the series): Come on Nelson, stop with these childish stories and give us the puzzles! Me (now): Forget the puzzles! I want to know what will happen with Peter Patzer, Average Joe and Bobby Fisherman!
That second puzzle was one of the most fascinating puzzles I've seen. Both kings trapped on two different corners. And the Queen covering every single square where the Bishop could go.
That was clever, I like it, my only question is, why is the octopus’s pupils so big? Was it because he was so stunned or is he wearing really thick glasses?
Wow! That second puzzle had me flummoxed - I was convinced it was a draw; the maneuver to force black into zugzwang was brilliant! And that first puzzle was a nice reminder to always look for an intermezzo - a lesson I sorely need to learn. Thanks Nelson - keep them coming!
Second puzzle is a draw no matter what I try after queen f3 black can just play king d2 instead of b2 and then go up instead of down, can’t bring him into zugzwang there because a7 is defended
I've once heard that a queen could push a king to the edge of the board even without the help of the king. But I didn't remember it until Nelson showed the solution. Nice puzzle where this is relevant.
I'm pretty happy that I saw the answer to the first puzzle almost immediately. I ended up concluding that the second puzzle was a draw even though my gut told me there was a way to maneuver the king into a fork with the bishop. I just couldn't find it.
There is a missing variation avout the first puzzle. After 1- G7 , RG8.2- k G2 the black king will attack the pawn at G5 to get the draw. It is still winning but you will have to move the bishop to E7 at the right time to protect the G5 pawn while the other pawn is protected by the king. So the rook will have to trade with the pawn and the other pawn (which is protevted by the bishop) will bring the victory.
why do i instantly click this video, it’s the first video in my feed i love this series i would really like more things like this, also could u put numbers from where we started to now
10:07 I guess I'm smarter than an octopus. I saw the thumbnail earlier in the game and figured out the general plan; however, I wasn't sure whether White would be able to get the bishop that quickly, that after getting the bishop to move, White might have to maneuver the queen to pin the bishop so that it was off the g1-a7 diagonal, freeing the king. Maybe someone could compose a problem where that extra step is necessary?
That octopus is so stinkin' cute! I'd love to shake his tentacles and play him a game of chess with a big hug afterwards, win or lose! ❤ Great story, keep it going, Nelson!
I’d be willing to bet I have never guessed correctly…even with a 50% chance and no requirement to explain it, pretty sure I’m always wrong. That second puzzle was awesome, very clever.
The bishop can defend my pawn because both are on dark squares. The question is whether I can kick the black king out, which I think is possible; the bishop can move while defending the pawn, which allows me to force black to make unfavorable moves.
If Bg7 Black can throw a check with Rd8+, getting the rook to safety, -> if the white king moves then black plays hxg7 and suddenly white has no path to victory, its remaining pawn is stuck, the bishop can do nothing about it and the black rook can just cut off the white king forever, for instance with Rd5 followed by Rf5, guarded by the black pawn on a white square and completely safe, while the black king moves to the corner to clean up and escort the black pawn to queen. White can likely sacrifice its bishop to stop it at some point, but that leaves black with king an rook vs king, an easy win. -> the only other moves is white bishop blocks the check with Bd4, but then the rook takes it with check: Rxd4+, white king has to move, and we're back on the line above except white doesn't even have a bishop to delay things, black can just go for the rook and king checkmate right away :)
From what ive learned, the most obvious move isnt always the correct move and thats had me better calculating :) i actually got the first one correct so im excited about that
Hey Nelson, I’m out of school. Would you like analyze and do a game review of one my games, on your channel for me? I think that last one was really good! :)
I love these puzzles and am almost getting better at solving them Got the first one correctly and the 2nd one until the move that the whole comment section is talking about (yeah i couldnt figure out that one even tho zugzwong is an idea that i usually try to ... try)
With the first puzzle, I actually came up with my own solution. If you can find a flaw, it'd be appreciated, but I didn't see anything major. My move is Bg7. You see, this also threatens the Rook in a unique way. If the Rook doesn't move, he dies. If it tries to move anywhere else, you take with h7. If the Rook moved to g8 to try and attack the pieces, then this move also attacks the Rook. If it captures the Bishop, you move to h8 and promote to Queen. If it moves to another spot in the 8 file, we reach a scenario similar to if they did so in the first place. In which case, we promote anyway. If the Rook takes the promoted piece, we take the Rook, and then push the other pawn to promotion.
Hello, i think the best option for white to win in chess puzzle 1 is - white bishop to g7 threatening the rook , if black rook to g8 , the pawn at g6 takes the pawn at h7 which threatens the rook and thus white forces promotion . Now white can win with queen and king checkmate
Cleaner way to force black king into the corner in second puzzle is to play Qf3 first instead of Qa3. Because after Qa3 Kc2 Qf3 black can repeat the position with Kd2. And after Qf3 Kc2 Qa3 black king is forced to move to f1. The technique is to place the queen in knight move against the opposite side's king.
The second puzzle is cool, but unfortunately it is tarnished by several so-called "duals", alternative winning moves for White: even right at the beginning any of White's three legal moves wins. 😞
Is it just me, or the first puzzle has already been featured by nelson before? Or am i just having a deja vu? @chessvibes i need your confirmation Mr. Nelson
Me (at the start of the series): Come on Nelson, stop with these childish stories and give us the puzzles!
Me (now): Forget the puzzles! I want to know what will happen with Peter Patzer, Average Joe and Bobby Fisherman!
the story became important only after you got to know every character bc like peter and joe where irrelevant back then
I kinda wanna know the story of octopus in sunglasses now. We need a spinoff.
Same...😂
My kid were take-it-or-leave-it with chess until these stories… now it’s what they want as a bedtime story ! What a cool dad you must be
That second puzzle was one of the most fascinating puzzles I've seen. Both kings trapped on two different corners.
And the Queen covering every single square where the Bishop could go.
Very clever way to destroy Black's fortress in the 2nd puzzle .
That was clever, I like it, my only question is, why is the octopus’s pupils so big? Was it because he was so stunned or is he wearing really thick glasses?
@@davidjoseph7142 And where do you find a suit that has that many tentacleholes?
It ended better for the octopus than it could have. When fisherman wins they usually end up on the grill.
Wow! That second puzzle had me flummoxed - I was convinced it was a draw; the maneuver to force black into zugzwang was brilliant!

hi nelson, you are one of the most underrated youtubers i know
he is second in my underated chesstuber the first one being chess for charity
Indeed. He is the best chess youtuber, by far.
There are many more underrated youtubers like chesscoach andras and chess dojo
I think chess vibes is underrated

Last puzzle was very nice. I thought about it for about five minutes, and almost came to the same conclusion as the octopus
Second puzzle is a draw no matter what I try after queen f3 black can just play king d2 instead of b2 and then go up instead of down, can’t bring him into zugzwang there because a7 is defended
Not a draw. If Kd2, Qb3. The two variations for black from there are forced #.
I've once heard that a queen could push a king to the edge of the board even without the help of the king. But I didn't remember it until Nelson showed the solution. Nice puzzle where this is relevant.
Episode 100 of this series be like:

I love this channel, and I'm blown away at how rapidly its growing! Keep it coming Nelson ❤
I had the general idea of both puzzles, quite interesting
I expected a knight at this puzzle because of the octopus

Me : The hell do I type
BTW love these chess puzzles with back story
I find it funny how before every explanation, Nelson asks me if I had a chance to look at that :D
In the first puzzle, Bg7 looks like a good first move.
ye but they just take your pawn and you take the rook and the king is to close to save the pawn
The bishop can defend my pawn because both are on dark squares. The question is whether I can kick the black king out, which I think is possible; the bishop can move while defending the pawn, which allows me to force black to make unfavorable moves.

No rook checks then pawn takes. You then have rook and pawn vs rook and bishop
Thank you very much!
Bobby fisherman is stockfish in human i love it
the 2nd puzzle teach us
king + queen checkmate a solo king
a solo queen stalemate a solo king
The white pawns are going forward 🤣
From what ive learned, the most obvious move isnt always the correct move and thats had me better calculating :) i actually got the first one correct so im excited about that
5:16.
Win for White
The second puzzle tells us never to underestimate the importance of zugzwan (I'm sure I misspelled it, just save it! Lol).
You only missed one letter: it's _zugzwang_ ("Zwang" means compulsion, and "Zug" means move)
@@sigmaoctantis5083 I'll probably forget that! But thank you.

That second one was great. It had me completely fooled. I figured I'd nailed it when I didn't see a way to bust up the pawn and bishop. :/
Thanks!
Appreciate it!
in the second puzzle what if after Qf3 instead of Kb2 the king goes to Kd2 then Qb3 and then Be3. I dont see a way to Checkmate
How is taking the bishop with the king a stalemate?
Best puzzle frfr
Note that in the final zugzwang on the 2nd puzzle. Bf1 is a trap. Kxf1 is stalemate, but Qd1 then queen takes bishop, wait he said so
I know Woody Allen is a slimy fellow but I never knew he played chess. He’s more talented than I realized and these are entertaining puzzles.

I've considered that move too, but unfortunately Black can save his rook with check (Rd8+) and capture hxg6 on his next move.

But Bg7, hxg6 looks like a draw because you can take the rook but the bishop is on the wrong colour to take the pawn and your king gets boxed out.
