- We get a lot of questions about how we clean our equipment after letterpress printing. We normally use 1K kerosene as a solvent to clean the ink off of the press, letterpress cuts, and type.
In this video, Jared demonstrates cleaning the 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press. This was after a press run using reflex blue rubber base ink to print cards. Reflex blue is probably one of the most troublesome inks to clean.

Very satisfying. Not sure why I’m drawn to this content. But I’m here for it! Please keep it coming!
Nice work, looks like it could be time consuming for people back in the day.
I imagine they were more efficient than me!
Thank you so much for showing these videos, they always take me back to where I grew up in printing
So pretty omgg
Can yall do a short video about the ink yall use plz? I have alot of questions about it, such as is it hard to come by? Is it expensive? Thank yall
I mean, you can buy ink for letterpress printing on Amazon.
Thank you for this,
get in touch with history. satisfying asmr. what a great channel.
Love the different shades of blue, could be an artwork. Speckle some white ink/paint and you get a starry night image.
That was my question. Thanks!
Nice blue, wonderful technology
Reflex Blues! When you get that color on your hands! Put a disposable glove on, at least for the wash up solvent that is fuming into your pores!
Perfect
Question, how much ink was used back in the days when printing the news paper??
What year are you referring to? No matter what, a lot of ink is used but at the time of the Gold Rush paper was way more expensive.
@@SacramentoHistoryMuseum well, around the gold rush era and say, around 1857ish?
How long do you guys have to do that for? 😮
Until the press is clean, which takes about 3 minutes.
Is there a video that explains how the mechanism works? Like what the rotating disk is for if the rules and stamp are underneath
Hey, why not just clean the rolling parts straight away?
Use invisible cleaner on this one
It's a shame not to use all that ink to print few more things. I wonder if back in the day they actually did use it up until wouldn't print anymore
Pretty much all the ink was used up. The amount on the disk isn’t enough to make a full impression on another copy.
Seems like the new hand wipes are the more efficient option for cleaning the type tools.
First u should clean the 2 rollers 😂😂
Idk why but it's like satisfyingly annoying lol
