Although the title proclaims this to be Athens 1896, the first Olympic Games of the modern era, this film is almost certainly of the so-called Intercalated Games of 1906 - the event captured is the standing high jump, which did not feature in the 1896 Games. The interim competition was held at a time when Athens and the International Olympic Committee were at odds over the decision to hold the Games in different cities of the world.

There was a 10 year-old who competed and won a bronze medal in gymnastics at the original 1896 Olympics. He died in 1970, a year after the moon landing, and the year that the Beatles broke up. What a lifespan.

@@Sickestwackestbroad Actually not. There is a MASSIVE advantage of being smaller and lighter in gymnastics. The reason they today have an age limit of 16 is to prevent younger people like 13 year olds from winning, which would make everyone question the legitimacy of the sport.

Just a note about the standing high jump. Both the standing high jump, and standing long jump, were separate events from the high and long jumps which allowed run-ups. They were last featured in the 1912 Stockholm Games.

Well to be factually accurate the first film with sound type machine was being played around with in the early to mid-1890s. But to be honest besides the really rich big performers doing it from time to time, (including the 1927 hit “talkie” called “The Jazz Singer” featuring Al Jolson), you are right the average person didn’t have the technology for it until 1929.
