Nice Ozziefan. My debut at a ground was not until I was 15 when I watched days 2,3 and 4 at Gabba versus kiwis in November 1987. Boonie scored an excellent ton on day 2 and Australia won by 9 wickets shortly before tea on day 4.

Me too. Just great memories. Wonderful. When Lara got going it was all over. We walked away thinking West Indies had bet on Australia. Remember. That last ball would have gone for six with the bats and the advent of boundary ropes these days. It's not all about 4s and sixes, boys and girls. Fast bowlers making batsmen nervous is where its at for me.

Batting was lot more difficult those days , the quality of the bats were nothing compared to todays bats, add to it the length of the boundaries it was very difficult to make big scores. Sixers were very few , may be one or two in the entire match. These days batting has become lot easier with high quality bats and shorter boundaries . Mark waugh , tendulkar , lara may be have scored 8-12 hundreds each in the 90s , but they are equal in effort to kohli , amla scoring 30 hundreds in todays ODI cricket.

Fwiw Mark was originally picked for the NSW team as an opening bowler instead of his batting. He also bowled a fair bit for Australia when he first got his opportunity. Even opened the bowling in one match when Craig McDermott got injured. The stat's show he was more than a part timer as a medium pace bowler. As a medium pace bowler he averaged around a wicket per a match at test and odi. He averaged 34 with the ball at test level as a medium pacer and 26 at odi. Those numbers compete with genuine all rounders really. Then after back injuries he converted into a less effective part time off spinner.

@@ronaldball9389 Mark Waugh was first picked for NSW as an opening batsman with Mark Taylor. He played the second half of the 1985/86 season as an opening bowler alongside Mike Whitney as NSW picked 3 spinners - Bob Holland, Peter Taylor and Murray Bennett. Mark Waugh is one of only 3 Australian players to achieve the following - Test Century, ODI Century, Test 5-fer and ODI 5-fer. The only other two players are Greg Chappell and Michael Clarke. Mark Waugh was a very good medium pace bowler. Always had a knack of getting good players out. He switched to off spin after the 1995 Windies Tour and didn't take many tickets after that but will note he did get Tendulkar in a World Cup game LOL.

@randOmZ TV Greg Matthews said in a 1986 book that Steve Waugh will end up being a great batsman. I remember thinking come on Matthews. Bill O'Reilly said the same thing as well. Watch the early WSC games. Steve Waugh was the most talented cricketer going around. He had all the shots, all the skills, all the talent. His bowling was so effective. What he lacked in 5km's of pace he made up for it with skill, swing, cut and variations. His batting was just shots galore. It was being out of the Test side over a 15 Test period (bar 2 Tests) that changed his mindset to batting. The 1993 Ashes Tour was Steve Waugh's change for multi talented shot maker to calculated and surviving batsman. Mark Waugh's bowling was always regarded as part-time to his batting but would often open the bowling for NSW if they picked 3-spin attack and even did in a Test when Craig McDermott broke down at Lord's and they had 2 spinners in the side. Mark Waugh's record with medium pace shows he was better than a part-timer and really was a batting all-rounder. Put it this way if the Waugh's were around today we wouldn't be having this 5th bowler obsession search.

I remember during that season when the MCG got totally resurfaced that even when you did get the ball off the middle of the bat a lot of the time it wasn't reaching the boundary because the infield and the outfield was so slow. Brian Lara probably showed that the best way to reach the boundary in this match was to hit the ball at least 3/4 of the way to the boundary in the air to take the slow infield and outfield out of play.

Yes. Steve Waugh was a very good bowler. In this game the Waugh's bowled the death overs. Steve was a noted death bowler back in the days. A very good bowler early in his career before he virtually shelved his bowling and all the shots he used to have when batting to focus on the Test batsman he finished up as. Mark was brought on out of desperation to take a wicket he ended up taking 5 plus a run out. Mark normally bowled when one of the first 5 wasn't going well or injured during the game or they badly needed a break through wicket.
