What's more fun than a quick lesson on survival water filters? Why, misusing your life saving equipment of course! I run a local beer through my brand new katadyn pocket water filter to see how it holds up and the results won't surprise you... Seeing as beer has very few particulates that are larger than .2 microns and this filter only takes out anything larger than .2 microns it basically just makes the beer flat. However, the effect it has on creek water is significant as the water is primarily filled with sediment and life forms. THIS is exactly what the filter was designed for and it does very well. I am not currently affiliated with katadyn but I do love their products which is one of the reason's I made this video.
I was very curious what your review would say. I just returned from a camping trip where one friend had the pocket and the other had the hiker. The hiker definitely pumped more water than the pocket but the big difference was taste. We pumped from a running stream and the hiker had a weird taste and was a little brown. The pocket was crystal clear and tasted absolutely wonderful. If you're looking for something less expensive the hiker sounds like a good way to go. If you're looking for the best water possible while on the trail the pocket can't be beat.
Best video comparing these two I’ve seen. BY FAR. Good work sir.
With the Pocket Filter, you are paying mostly for the large ceramic filter which is good for 10,000 liters. The Vario has a tiny ceramic filter in comparison which is only good for 2000 liters. The Vario comes with the added charcoal filtration which is good not only for cleaner flavor but also for chemical removal - the pocket filter does not have this feature but an "in line" after market filter can be purchased and installed on the pocket filter's out put line. The Pocket filter is made of aluminum and stainless steel, where as the Vario is made from plastic. The pocket filter is much faster at filtration, but that speed incudes many more moving parts and O-Rings which can fail. The pocket is much simpler and robust, although a slower filter.
The Vario is not a buy it for life item - the pocket filter certainly is that type of product.
If you just compare the life of the filters. Pocket 50,000 litres vs 2000 for just the main filter of the Vario. You would need to buy 25 new Vario filters to cover the life of the Pocket filter. 25x the price of a Vario filter and the Pocket works out quite cheap.
Just found your channel love the videos man
Nice comparison. Liked it. Sometimes smaller is better!
This video sold me to Vario 😂. Great video thank you!
Good information.
Thanks! I'm trying a slightly new format for my first 10 seconds to see how it works in the long run.
The pocket literally does have triple (probably six plus times) the value because it lasts pretty much a lifetime for any normal person. Unless you’re filtering water for an army. In which case it still holds more value. If you’re on a budget, the vario takes it for short term use.
I wanted something decent that I could do for a family of people I picked up the katadyn vario and it's light weight pretty awesome. Also life straw for quick drink or emergency situations
I believe the small tube in the bag with the green felt is not a cleaning solution but a silicone grease for the o-rings. Good presentation though.
Yes, you're right.
Thank You
No problem!
Very good video, it's a shame you only get so few views and comments on these longer videos
I guess a lot of people just don't have the attention span for longer videos. It'll happen eventually. I have patience. 🙂
@@FollowTheCompassNorth I prefer to not use or carry water filters or purifiers and drink unfiltered water 💦 direct from rivers, lakes and streams.
Regarding the beer... 🍺 I always prefer to filter it directly through my stomach! 😂
If the item was the same price... Which one
would it clean water in south florida that is still? can you run rain water through it if needed? I'm concerned about these waters having toxic algae but I can't get an answer on this and I'm concerned if we need to use it with what is coming soon
you forgot to wash out the new filter first..
You're right! Sometimes I get distracted when I focus on the filming and ironically miss things either in editing or completely.
It does raise the question - why is the pocket 3x the price? Is it filtering at a finer level?
because it filters 50,000 liters instead of 2,000 liters like this one. Thank you, me.
Oooh I might need to pick up one of these... After long-term use, would you say there are any particular points of failure, structurally speaking? Does the plastic hold up? I'd hate to drop it and crack something important!
Thanks for another awesome video! (:
On the Vario I've always been worried about the plastic handle but nothing has ever broken on it. The output hose bag has deteriorated but a simple ziplock would be a suitable replacement.
@@FollowTheCompassNorth Great to hear, thanks! I work in Outdoor Ed and this would be a great thing to pick up for programs, give people a chance to try 'em out hands-on. Katadyn SHOULD sponsor you! 😂
der Stiefel... aint das boot
Der Boot? Yeah, i'dont think so. 😂 Wer zum Teufel nennt denn bitte den Stiefel, Boot? WTF?
